Deathwatch is simultaneously the best and worst of the Imperium. Ravenguard with a Tau-influenced railgun? I'm imagining them calculating a suborbital trajectory to hit a target on the other side of a planet.

The Deathwatch should be the protagonists of more video games instead of the Blueberries. Reasons: 1. They deliberately incorporate marines from various chapters for every squad, no doubling up ever, so it's not just ultramarines. The main character could still be one, but then we could have lots of fun conflict between a space wolf wanting to be all aggressive and an imperial fist wanting to be all defensive. Or a Blood Angel struggling against the Black Rage in front of non-Blood Angels, or a Space Wolf going wulfen. Very emotional and meaningful. 2. They have a variety of really cool xenos weapons as well as specialty human weapons that would all be awesome to try. 3. Just because they're xenos specialists doesn't mean they won't encounter Chaos, case in point, Space Marine 1 and 2. 4. They look sick. Black with a silver arm is an awesome aesthetic. 5. They work with the Inquisition, meaning there could be tons of intrigue and human conflict. In summary, the Deathwatch is perfect for video game protagonist status. One thing to mention about Space Marine healing: a good example of it is in Space Marine 2 when we see Titus literally the day after he had crossed the Rubicon primaris. One thing you notice is that there are no suture marks. Its all scarred that fast. They heal ridiculously quick.

The Raven maybe would throw his hat for the race, but he likes scouting, stealth, and sniper-ing too much, so... The Minotaur WILL DEFINITELY try to take command, butting heads with the Wolf. I'm pretty sure the deathwatch is keeping tabs on the tau. If they launch another sphere expansion the imperium needs a tripwire to alert them, putting the Deathwatch on surveillance duty makes sense.

You mention the Black Templars, and indeed, one of the things that distinguishes the Black templars is that they have a permanent presence in the Deathwatch. Templars are the Chapter that sends the most brothers to the Deathwatch, by a country mile. A lot of Deathwatch doctrine and tradition is adopted from the Templars, like how heavy an authority Chaplains are, and stuff like chaining their Chainsword to their wrist. Demetrian Titus shows obvious hints he served heavily with the Templars, and a Black Templar was a member of his Kill Team. Titus might very well have been vetted after Thrax's imprisonment by a Templar Chaplain, who are easily some of the toughest Chaplains to convince. Dark Angels are the only ones I think are worse.

Considering the Black Templars also wipe their ass with the 1000 marines rule, having the biggest presence is hardly something thats hard to achieve.

@TaleNodati It's not merely by their sheer numbers, the Templars make it a point to send people to the Deathwatch, since the Templars themselves are considered elite among Space Marine chapters at fighting Xenos. Both thr Templars and the Deathwatch are happy with the arrangement, since it's a win-win for both.

Idk if GW or the writers had actual military experiences but this special force of Space marines is oddly very similar to actual special forces. Especially Tier 1 types, there is the JSOC which does exactly the same as those marines, where 1 out of 100 may become a navy seal or a Delta Operator (even that is probably too high lol) and out of them they select the best again for the JSOC. Some sources claim that the CIA also uses that but then again how much do we know as civilians? Yeah nothing. So yeah as someone who served and is quite interested in modern military culture i see way to many parallels.

Minotaurs tithe, Scars too. Both actually have rules for play in the Deathwatch TTRPG! And for how their chapter interacts inside of it. Which, the Scars have a fierce rivalry of the Raven Guard in their lore primer for cool interactions between players. The Minotaurs interestingly start with high statbonuses, easier equipment grabs but very notably the feature Enemy(All Adeptus Astartes} which makes it fun, because they're pariahs amongst their own kind
