...so something occurred to me around 33:00, if Chaos had been a little more patient, the Imperium would have been dealing with a Horus Heresy involving Astartes in Terminator Armour on both sides, pitched combat in the Imperial Webway, Magnus on the Throne fighting with Chaos' whispers and a possibly flickering guiding light for those still travelling through the warp, and perhaps maybe even more Primarchs at each others' throats than canon. And that's just the stuff off of the top of my dome!

Source? I've heard this a lot but never had anyone point to a source. AFAIK they were based on hardened engineering suits more so than mining suits. White Dwarf 112: "Also Known as Tactical Dreadnought Armor, Terminator exo-armor is a development of the sealed environment suits used by spaceship crews, space pirates and in many other lethal situations." Undoubtedly that also includes some mining operation, but the implication that "Mining Suit" implies a much higher baseline function for basic suits, and not this gear with specific applications being up-armoured.

If you are playing a dbd wizard, and want to be tanky, play aburation wizard, get the feat for elderitch innovation that let's you cast mage armor for free, then you will always have that barrier at will between fights, for additional hit points play a hill dwarf which gets more hit points.

Mountain dwarf allows you to wear medium armor, and then just take the tough feat. With Dex mod of 2 that's 16 AC in Scale Mail without needing Mage Armor. Re-up your arcane ward with Shield for max efficiency.

War wizard gets the mini shield and +4 to saves at level 2. Ran a mountain dwarf war wizard with better ac than the tank for a long time. Pick up a level in artificer and get cure wounds and some infusions and you can handle most anything. And for the Spell book I went with metal sheets etched and chromed.

I can't believe Isyander didn't mention it. Terminators have one massive flaw that relates to their mobility; they don't operate well in buildings that can't support them. There was a moment when a Terminator (pretty sure Dark Angel) was getting a little too quick while moving through a building, and without warning, he fell through like, 3 floors and got stuck in the place's basement when the stairs he tried to use collapsed on him XD.

IIRC that piece of art you used for Gorgon Pattern Terminator armour is a Morlock Elite of the Iron Hands, rather than a suit of Gorgon Armour. Gorgon Armour was based on Indomitus Pattern Termi armour, which makes it even more fun cause whilst all the other legions were tweaking and using Cataphractii and Tartaros armour, Ferrus was just like "Give me the best you've got. That's it? Imma make it better" There's also a Forgeworld Model for Gorgon Armour. I wish the Iron Hands got full rules in 40k. ALSO, Iron Hands Episode when? You've done one on the Raven Guard and Salamanders, so you should finish off the Istvaan Trifecta

So @Isyander, an easy way to have a beefy wizard is to play a mountain dwarf abjuration wizard . Montain dwarf gets you proficiency in light and medium armor, so you can max int, then have a good constitution and a decent Dex. This will get you a respectable level of hp and AC. Then you later grab the feats war caster (ofc) and resilient(CON) in order to never fail a concentration check 🙂

As someone who plays a renegade Red Wizard of Thay, one of the cooler ways to reflavor a spellbook is to take the Planegea caveman wizard approach and tattoo your spells directly onto your skin. Crystals containing spell knowledge is cool too. Or having your spells written in the weaving of a tapestry. Maybe a clockwork mechanism that unfolds to be particular parts of your steampunk spellbook/millennium puzzle.

Help for the DnD wizard idea! You could pick a Mountain Dwarf from 2014. They get to use light and medium armour natively, which could give you boost to your survivability. Alternately, take a 1 to 3 level dip in fighter. If you go to 3 you could choose the Eldritch Knight subclass, and both options let you wear heavy armour!

For your wizard, if you want tanky I’d suggest either Abjuration, War, or Bladesinger subclasses and maybe multi classing a bit into eldritch knight fighter. Have fun!

possibly few levels into armourer artificer and use your INT for the strength requirement for plate, you also can get power fist style gauntlets with that subclass. If you want to mimic a space marine then half orc or Goliath would work very well, or dragonborn if you want the acid spit but as @ericgravengaard5833 said, have fun with it!

I got the steel battalion reference which speaking of mechs i like the way Forever Winter does there mechs where they have small medium (which are the ones currently in game) and presumably large mechs but they all have exosuits and tanks (that’s also what i like about 40K is instead of ditching one piece of tech for another they use them simultaneously

A heavily armoured wizard? We can do that.. Grab two levels in fighter, and then the rest of your levels in wizard. Be capable of wearing heavy armour and using action surge to cast two levelled spells in one turn. You could then grab a greatsword and ask to have it reflavoured as a Khopesh, and have your spells be runes upon the Khopesh or inscribed inside of your armour. If you play a human, you can grab Warcaster as your starting feat, so if your enemy tries to flee, you can use Booming blade as an attack of opportunity (punishing them with extra damage and even more if they continue moving!)

Looking for a Tanky wizard? My recommendation is magical exterminator. Level 1 fighter, then all in on abjuration wizard. If you can somehow get armor of Agathys? Then you're golden. My wizard started as an exterminator, but the rats were getting too much. He then discovered the rat's weakness. Plate armor. And after killing all the rats in the village, he needed to diversify his business. So he expanded to monstrosities and extraplanar entity pest control.

Suggestion for your Wizard: Mountain Dwarf. +2 Strength and Constitution, Medium Armor and Warhammers/Battleaxes. Keep your Dex mod at 2 and grab some Half Plate, and you're 90% to Eldritch Knight AS A FULL WIZARD! It's so underrated. Abjuration pairs very well to keep you and allies safe in addition to letting you stay up in the mix if you so choose.

If you want to play a tanky wizard there are two ways I can think to go about it, in 5E 1: Mono-class: Bladesinger elf wizard. You gain an ability to enter a state that adds your INT modifier to your AC. You are also going to need to focus on your DEX just as much as your INT for this build. In addition I would look into gaining the ability to use light armor with this build, or taking mage armor and shield. Items for this build would include ring of protection, displacer cloak, and bracers of defense. 2: Multi-classing: Become either a war wizard or an abjuration wizard as you get some pretty neat defensive buffs with these two sub-classes. Then multi-class into a class that gets heavy armor prof. I recommend life, war, or twilight cleric as they pick up heavy armor prof. at level 1. You are also going to need to be a dwarf of some kind. Thing is you don't need to focus on either STR or DEX for this build as heavy armor does not add your DEX modifier to your AC, and being a dwarf your speed can't be reduced by wearing heavy armor (at least in the 2014 version of 5e.). In addition to heavy armor prof. with these sub-classes you also get some additional cleric spell slots that you can use to pick up and cast shield of faith which adds +2 to AC for 1 minute. Also, if you choose the hill dwarf sub-species, you get an additional +1 HP per level, thus padding out your armor with a bit for health. These are just my two most favorite ways of having a tanky wizard. If anyone has any other ideas on how to better build a wizard please let me know. Love build crafting.

Flavoring a dnd wizard spellbook for my boy: The classics: big book that might be slightly haunted, full body tattoos, comically large scroll, deck of fancy cards, bag of runestones, oops all potions. Out there ideas: colony of arcane life. Adding spells is adding something to your personal biome. Need a fireball? Grab a spicy beetle or mold clump, charge it and throw like a pikmin. Belt-fed scroll: comically long scroll wrapped around your hand and arm that quickly spins and cycles to put the correct rune in front of your hand. Floating diagrams: toss a folder full of pages and let them stick in midair for you to flip through like in man's hologram ui. Big hat logan: everything is written on the bottom of your stupidly wide floppy hat brim or massive drippy cloak/cape that always twitches out of the way when you need to see something. Record of bones: tied to your arm and supplemented by a pouch on your shoulder is a collection of carefully carved scrimshaw, with an optional talking skull that only you consistently understand. Persona arcana: you have a different intensely stylized mask for each school of magic, etched or painted with tiny magic script.

Spell book suggestions: spells are carved into beads, whether the beads are on friendship bracelets, a rosary, in hair, etc and as an added bonus if your character dies you can have a fun Batman remembering his mom’s pearls scattering in the alley moment for the other characters If you find a way to get armour proficiency on the wizard have your spells in the armour like a grey knight In terms of being a tank wizard I recommend abjuration with a dip into warlock to pick up armour of agathys because the arcane ward will take damage before the agathys temp hp and that entire time you are still dealing cold damage every hit, and once the agathys temp hp is down you just cast it again and the cycle resets

Hi! To answer your wizard question i highly reccomend a Abjuration wizard! They gain a sheild of temporary hit points which can get very tanky at higher levels and refreshes when casting an abjuration spell. The best version of this you can do is a variant human or Custom liniage to take the Eldrich adept feat at lvl 1 and chose the Armor of shadows invocation which means you can spam mage armor at will to completely refill your sheild for free. I also reccomend a one level dip in your cleric of choice for armor proficiencys (2 levels if storm cleric so you can auto max damage your big lightning/thunder spells). So on the wizard, I once played a (mountain?) dwarf wizard wearing medium armor and carried his runed stones as his spell book. Each morning he would "create" his spell list by combining the runic stones into specific abilities (usually wall spells). I also eventually took heavy armor prof and was then in fullplate, with a shield. It was so much fun

Isyander if you’re looking for reflavoring your spellbook it does depend on the vibe of the setting, but here’s a couple ideas off the dome. 1) it’s just some kind of magical stone or gem, and it projects the pages when you need them (visually I’m thinking like holographic communicators from Star Wars but totally up to you) that way you can just pop your spellbook into an armored pocket or the like 2) you have it inscribed onto your armor, whether outside in mostly invisible ink (which can then shine when you are casting said spell if you want to add that flavor) or inside that you read over before putting it on when making your daily preparations 3) if in more of a “forgiving” setting/group, just straight up make it the Predator’s wrist computer thing that you see it use near the end of the original movie

I think memory crystals *are* a thing in DnD lore, though mostly favored in the underdark I believe.

Oh boy I've waited for this question for so long. Play a mountain dwarf wizard, you get medium armor proficiency and you can scrimshaw your spell book on the inside of your half plate. When you hit level 4, you can take a feat for heavy armor proficiency and do the same with full plate. I think you get shields and martial weapons too, so AC 20 with a longsword when you run out of spells.
