This is the worst Media Watch episode I've seen. I am the always the first to say "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence", but the Wuhan Institute of Virology theory is not at all extraordinary. All evidence suggests COVID-19 was NOT genetically engineered. That analysis does not discount the very realistic possibility of it having leaked from the nearby Wuhan Institute of Virology. It's very common for virologists to collect virus samples from animals in the routine practice called "disease surveillance". Scientists around the world (including in Australia) do this to better understand the viruses among the animals around us. This helps society get on top of outbreaks among humans or livestock (such as the occasional Australian Bat Lyssavirus outbreaks in people and horses every few years). While there is likely an animal reservoir of a virus similar to COVID-19 somewhere in China, the fact that the Wuhan Institute of Virology is so close the initial Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market and is the only place in China authorized to work on coronaviruses (and has done significant amounts of public research on bat coronaviruses) raises a lot of questions. We know that laboratory animals are routinely infected with viruses to study their effects. The idea that lab animals escaped, or were sold for human consumption at the nearby wild life market (whether for food or Traditional Chinese Medicine) is not a wild claim at all. It deserves to be fully and transparently investigated. Unfortunately, we also know that the government of China lies and will not stop at destroying evidence. If the virus did leak from the lab to the initial outbreak at the nearby wildlife market we will likely never get official confirmation. Remember that in China, all COVID-19 research papers must be approved by the government of China. Even if the virus leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, I expect the government of China to publish a research paper that discovers a near identical virus occurring in the original animal reservoir, and claim with certainty that's where the virus originated. People need to stop calling the Wuhan Institute of Virology a conspiracy theory. It's not far fetched at all. We need a independent investigation.

It is a standard practice for WHO to conduct a post review of all pandemics as was done for H1N1 to learn, improve handling and prevent future pandemics. Constantly stating the virus is not a lab construct does not, in any way, refute the possibility that a naturally occurring virus, taken into a lab for study, then escaped into the wild. Here's a hypothetical, "A virus in a remote bat cave, is collected and taken to a lab for study. It then escapes into a highly populated city where the lab is located." In this hypothetical, what's the origin of the outbreak?

It doesn't refute the idea that the naturally occurring virus simply spread directly to another host from a bat. So where does that leave you? It also doesn't refute the idea that the CIA, or some other foreign spy agency interfered with the Chinese lab. In other words there are a countless number of possible ways this could event could have happen. So how precisely are you intending to tell which is which? The scientific consensus is that the virus has not been modified by humans. So whether it was in a lab or not, doesn't mean it was the most likely cause of a transmission into another species. Bats are considered reservoir hosts. Viruses that evolve in bats get pass on to other species when those bats are eaten or come into physical contact with them. Bats travel for hundreds of miles when they feed. So it doesn't actually take very long for a virus to spread once it has the potential to live in another species. Look how easily this virus is transmitted between humans and realize any one coming into contact with the original host could propagate the virus. We aren't even sure how many kinds of mammal can be hosts for this virus. Certainly big cats seems to be able to be infected. How many other carries can there be?

I am stating that the ABC's presentation of 'evidence that it wasn't manipulated in a lab', is not evidence that a naturally occurring virus didn't escape from a lab. Stating that the ABC's argument doesn't prove innocence is not the same thing as claiming that China is guilty. I don't know where the virus originated or escaped from. I'd like to see a proper investigation rather than ABC's and China's stonewalling of these efforts.

Your statement claims it was not a virus worked on in the Wuhan lab. See the difference? Subtle, but important. When was the last known report of a complete virus list in that lab? Has there ever been one? Have there been more sampling expeditions completed since then? Exactly how many and which samples exist in that lab would be one of those 'known unknowns'. We know that we don't fully know what's there. Where we do agree is that it is not proven that Sars-CoV2 escaped from the Wuhan lab. I'm not claiming it did. I am making the claim that it may have. Many media outlets are making an absolute claim that it did not and backing up that claim with information that doesn't prove their point nor answer the question being asked. Where you and I also seem to agree is that a full investigation should be called for. Where we don't agree is where you say, "there is no reason to accept the hypothesis as a possibility." From what we already know, there is nothing that precludes the reality being the escape from a lab. It is absolutely a possibility. How much of a probability it may be, is yet unknown.

The WHO seems like the obvious choice. The point is to find out what happened and ensure that it doesn't happen again. It is not a simple task. The inability to understand that many virus's are natural and yet exploited by countries to become weapons is highlighted in this edition. The polite hand passing off that the virus was not "made" in the lab, ignores the option that the lab found this natural virus in a remote location and was cultivating it (as an experiment) at the Wuhan lab. So this makes both statements true but lack honesty. The use of bats is similar to the use of mice in testing, and the subsequent sale of used bats to the wet market is the highest probability of how it was released. Why is the ABC so desperate to cover for the Chinese Laboratory (or government)? This entire segment was a waste of the Nation's Broadcasters budget as it lacked integrity.

Coming from a lab is not the same as created in a lab. My understanding of the theory is that the jump from bats to human may have come from exposure in the lab where the bats were being studied rather than exposure in the market; not that the virus was created in a lab.
