For those wondering, the commentator who seemed a bit detached from modern indoor track is the GOAT of old school American marathon running. He was in his prime 45 years ago winning nearly every Boston and New York marathon between 1975 and 1980. For many of those years he was ranked number one in the world. Keep in mind this man was born in the 1940s. Gramps might not know much about indoor 5ks, but put some respect on the name of Bill Rogers, AKA "Boston Billy"

I really enjoyed Bill Rogers old school approach. He is so frank, so unpolished, and while you could nag about the rough edges, what comes through is a kind of wisdom that I think is very cool. Watch @ 3:00 where he basically says he became a road racer because running in crowded conditions on the track is really hard. I like it.

@ianbusche1471
@ianbusche1471 Жыл бұрын
@@keviatkinson293 he was a pacer/rabbit. He is there so the runners don’t have to lead the whole race and worry about the pace being correct. The runners can just run and know they will atleast be on for the first half of the race and have a chance to run fast. He likely couldn’t have ran that pace for the whole race but either wanted to help teammates and other runners do good or he got paid to do it which is also very possible and happens often.

I just read the comments and I think the majority of them haven't got a clue about US running since about 2005 or less. Rogers was a great runner in his prime almost 50 years ago. He always was pretty down to earth and homespun, but where these Karens are whining about how 'bro is clueless', they close their minds to what we call in the adult world 'corporate memory'. One of my favorite Rogers anecdotes is from, probably, a mid or late-'70s Runners World interview where he explains the practicality of being able to run 10 or 15 miles, night or day, for whatever reason. He said he kept a pair of running shoes in his old Volkswagen in case it broke down. He could always run home. It's funny. I can remember around the same time feeling safe and secure when I had my bike on the roof rack of my girlfriend's (wife since '74) Camaro that burned oil like a tramp steamer. I knew I could always get home. I enjoyed Bill Rogers' commentary. He has more experience and real wisdom than this whole pack of whiners, all together, will ever have.

2 takeaways 1. Robinson looked like he won with ease. As a reminder, he's the top returner in the NCAA indoor 5k. Expecting something special from him in 2023 2. The commentators sound like runners from the 70s that were detached from the sport until now when they were thrown into the press box and had 2 minutes to research the runners

I still think the men are much more competitive than the women, hands down. Just look at the excitement in that race, and its just the first race of the season.Ran my PR n the 5K on the old BU armory track 34 years ago, anybody remember that track, the dead spots and how it shook as you ran on it since they built it every season I think, it was raised like a foot off that old crusty floor. Heck I remember sneaking on the track one night to do some quarters repeats by myself practically in the dark. Times have changed.

We know about them, but the commentary was rough. Just because a man is an all-time great doesn’t mean he should be commentating. It’s similar to someone like Tony Romo when he started on ESPN, he may have been great at the game, but he did a pretty shit job at commentating. That being said I’d say with Rogers’ résumé he could pick it up pretty quickly.
