Unrelated, but i want to say that i wish Huang Zhong would also have a Yan yue Dao / Guan Dao like Guan Yu. He rivaled GY in Dao to Dao battles for Christ's sake. But, specifically, it should be an Elephant Guan Dao (Guan Dao without pointy tip, only round one) to signify his difference from Guan Yu. I imagine Guan Yu is more flexible with his choice than Huang Zhong's more traditional ideal and old age stubborness (Their Guan Daos reflect that, Guan Yu's can both slash and stab, while Huang Zhong's can only slash).

Yu Jin’s placement actually surprised me a lot. He beat out Cao Pi, Dian Wei, Taishi Ci, Sima Shi, and a lot of others I would have imagined were more popular. Edit: just seeing the top 10 alone, I think your data is extremely accurate. I’d say this definitely reflects the community at large.

Bro I gotta tell you Wang Yuanji is insanely huge in DW Japanese & Chinese fanbase.. she's probably the #1 female character in DW according to the east asian fanbase and Top 5 overall, she's the biggest ass pull for Jin popularity during their first introduction.. making Koei going on and on releasing DLC costume for her just to make the fanbase happy, she's even the ONLY female DW character to have an official scale figure released by Koei..

I loved participating in your polls over the last few weeks. There were many tough matchups in the end, but these rankings are very solid. I'm pleasantly surprised my main Zhang Liao came very close to taking the number 1 spot. It's also fascinating that the more villainous or morally grey characters tended to be more popular over the virtuous or clearly heroic personalities. I guess western audiences gravitate towards flawed heroes; Liu Bei's abysmal ranking shows that.

I'm so glad the polls got put together in a video. I'm surprised Dong Zhuo was so low, because he drives so much of the conflict in ROTK (but it's interesting that he's so polarized). I think its interesting how the majority of the lowest ranked characters were newcomers from DW9 and 8. Since they had less games to make an impression with they tend to be a lot more forgetable or just didnt do anything in the story. Which is funny because I felt the same about 80% of the cast in DW3, 4, 5 until DW7 fleshed out a bunch of lesser popular characters like Xiaohou Yuan and Huang Gai that ended going from irrelevant to some of my favorite officers. The highest rated DW9 character was Xin Xianying and thats probably due to the top tier waifu factor. The top 30 also consist of most of the DW waifu characters.

I am utterly speechless at how some of my absolute favorite characters have ranked! I was hoping and praying for Zhou Tai and Zhurong to be in the top and I am so happy they are, damn near dropped my phone too when Zhang Liao got 3rd place. A very fine list. While my personal favorites didn't fare very well (Yuan Shao, Zhuge Dan, Li Dian) there were also a fair amount of those I did favor which did make it high. Sima Yi being so high up really surprised me as did his wife's rating beyond even her kids. I also loved some of the symmetry of the list. Xiahou Yuan/Huang Zhong, Sun Quan/Liu Bei (bah!), though Zhang Liao and Lu Bu reigning supreme was great to see. Zhang Liao is such a great character both in the novel and history, so its great to see that this is becoming more appreciated with time. DW has always done a great job on his portrayal.

There are so many things that caught me off-guard like Zhurong being more popular than Diaochan, Zhou Tai on #6, or Yinping outshines Ping in popularity despite being the later addition. But these are pretty based revelation, I don't mind it a lot. I really hope KT gave more time developing the characters. Most of the new ones really felt too one-dimensional.

Satisfied with Liu Bei's rank. Guy has a narcissist hero complex and basically a huge jerk who betrayed many of his friends and families for his "benevolent" ambition. I like Wei & Wu because of their clear ambition and not being obnoxious about it. Although the game often potrays Sima Yi as the bad guy, ZhugeLiang is also a complete snake if you know his history of treating peasants. Also satisified with the rank due to my favs being in the higher part of the rank (Guo Jia and Zhou Yu)

the tier list is actually the best tier list. i honestly think xiao qiao is the better sister because her energy and personality is far more better than da qiao who have no energy to talk as well. sure xiao qiao acts like a kid but it is kinda funny while on the other hand Da qiao is super cringe. Sima Zhao having that much of a less rank is shocking. Zhen Ji beat her husband lol. it think Cao pi is a good character but Zhen Ji personally is better and i feel like if they do the right thing by adding her actual true story of her will put her up to the top 10 for sure. it's a good thing yue ying got 25th she is very underated.

The hard part for me when it came to voting on the Reddit polls was trying to separate history from the games and voting accordingly. For me, every fictional character is an immediate "F" because there are many influential officers and ministers that actually did notable things or highly influenced the period who are ignored when it comes to the games. Men like Zang Ba, Zhang Ni, Liao Hua, Wang Ping, Cao Zhen, Cao Chun, Jiang Qin, He Qi, and Li Yan all could have been great additions over the slew of made-up or minor officers given far more weight than they historically had. On the flipside, I completely understand the game is 99% Romance of the Three Kingdoms with sprinkles of history, so I had to just suck it up and vote based on how the character is written and plays. I'd say, for the most part, I agree with a vast majority of what people ended up voting based on the most recent versions of the characters. My only dissents would be Li Dian, Yue Jin, and Jia Xu being so low, Ma Chao and Huang Zhong being so high, and Lu Bu being #1 (Zhang Liao is the best!). Thank you for attending my TED talk.

To every Wei partisan (and a few Wu partisans), Liu Bei is the villain of the story (and a hypocritical one). Meanwhile, Shu partisans frankly prefer Zhuge Liang. To every Shu partisan, Sun Quan was guilty of a Top 10 Anime Betrayal. Most Wu partisans prefer Sun Jian and/or Sun Ce. Sima Yi is never presented as anything but the villain, even when he gets his own story. And unlike the other villain protagonists, his story is pretty much canon. The one arrogant character that successfully backed it up.

@@djn6962 In ROTK, Cao Cao said there were only two heroes: himself and Liu Bei. As portrayed in the novel, I fully agree. From the outside looking in, I would only two factions truly villainous: Dong Zhuo's group and the Sima clan. Even then, switching the Emperor for his little brother was meritorious, and by Wuzhang plains, we were past the Godzilla Threshold. However, Protagonist-centered Morality requires a villain. Who is in the way of my character achieving his dreams? On that note, I stand by what I said.

I feel as if koei had spent the time to dive deeper into Han Dang, he'd easily be my favorite character due to the fact him being 1 of the ogs and living longer than Sun Jian, Huang Gai, and Cheng Pu. There could've been a truly emotional scene when Han Dang finds out about Cheng Pu's and Huang Gai's death so suddenly after so many Wu characters die within that time period.

I feel weird about Yuan Shu and Dong Zhuo being so low. You're not meant to like them, they're supposed to be hated... So... Do people agree they're good villains? I wonder if maybe, some characters were hated, solely because they were added in DW9, a game people really did not like. Because, Dong Bai being so low feels weird, I was under the impression she was generally well received by everyone who did the DLC. My personal favourites are probably, - Hua Xiong - Cai Wenji - Lu Bu - Sun Jian - Zhang Liao And, ones I dislike the most would be, - Xiahou Ji (Just for the context, she herself IRL, and the character, did nothing wrong, just makes me uncomfortable that she's "here.") - Guanbabies+Bao Sanniang - Huang Zhong - Xu Shu - Zuo Ci - Zhu Ran

Some of this list confuses me. I get most of the bottom half being DW 8&9 original characters given the poor characterization of 8 and the general hatred of 9. The top 10 I more or less get. Dong Zhuo being so low surprises me given how much of the fanbase seems to love how entertaining he is and how much fun he is to play. I also expected Zhang Jiao to be higher for the same reason. Sima Zhao being that low was unexpected. I at least though he'd beat Sima Shi. How are Sun Quan and Liu Bei that low?

I was surprised Yuan Shu and Dong Zhuo were basically right at the bottom... popularity polls are a wierd thing though as characters you 'love to hate' often end up performing badly. there's a difference between being a 'bad' character and a 'hateable' character and I find those two are in the latter zone, they're cruel arrogant tyrants yes but seeing them hyukking it up is always entertaining and their designs are basically perfect to me.

Also, I always thought the Japanese fanbase opinion on characters based on the official polls was a bit off, but honestly if this about as definitive of a poll for Western fans of DW, then honestly I actually agree with Japanese fans' opinions more haha. Most of my favorites ranked in the 80s-60s here, so my ranking would be at least pretty heavily inverted from the results here. A bit shocked lol. Thanks so much for doing this though Nightowl! It was so much fun. Would you consider doing one for Samurai Warriors in the future?

@@TheNightowlGaming Yeah some really awesome characters there! To be honest I actually feel like SW has less one-note or boring characters. I think each character feels a bit more fleshed out in SW. Like in DW Ma Chao is the justice guy, Zhu Ran is the fire guy, Cao Ren is the defense guy, Huang Zhang is the old guy, and people like Taishi Ci, Xu Huang, Pang De, etc. are are fairly similar stoic warriors. I personally feel like SW does a better job avoided those issues. There is a bit more nuance there, on average. Maybe that’s a hot take but that’s just my opinion of course. lol

@@TheNightowlGaming Yeah I agree on that, it definitely took me a lot more time to get to know the Samurai Warriors characters because there are no color palettes and some characters do move from clan to clan. I’m not sure if you’ve played it yet but I do recommend starting with Samurai Warriors 2+XL to get the best possible sense of who is who. I think that game does a good job helping familiarize you with each character because it follows their individual stories. Plus it’s just a top tier Warriors game. But at least for me once they SW characters clicked, they really clicked. There are so many more nuances to characters in SW that help them stand out once you know them. Plus I think the smaller clan based nature of the setting allows each character a better chance to shine in their own right compared to kingdoms in DW where we now have 20+ characters for each kingdom, making some characters always shoved to a side or small role. Whereas if a clan has like 2 or 3 characters, every single battle with that clan will feature those few characters and give them more room to develop.

I’m not even going to address the injustice that was done to Zhou Cang and Fa Zheng. I’m pleasantly surprised with Jia Chong’s placement - you had me sweatin that he came in at a much, much worse position. And Li Dian getting 69 made me giggle more than should be acceptable - I’m sure he’s more than happy there 😂 Otherwise, there were quite a few that came in as a shock (told y’all Xiaoqiao was the superior sister) and others (specifically the top 5 or so) that were less of a shock. I feel like some of Zhou Cang’s hate can correlate to people wanting Liao Hua who has been a fan favorite to come for so long only to get Zhou Cang since they’ve both got similar backgrounds (both bandits of the Yellow Turbans who joins Shu through Guan Yu) and also the fact that Zhou Cang is entirely fictional which people seem to hate. Not to mention Zhou Cang had a pretty cool move set and was introduced in the All Stars which hardly anyone played only for it to be replaced with a clone weapon in Dynasty Warriors 9.

Fire goddess deserves her ranking. Gan Ning dynasty warrior 4 moveset godtier. Cao Cao being at 10 im cool with that Sun Jian being higher im cool with that too. Zhang Liao better then LuBu in my opinion because he showed more character then Lubu when faced with execution.

I am surprised that Zhurong is top lady in 11th where majority of the woman are back to back in the 20s. I realized that the newest DW9 characters did not make it above 50 with the highest, Xin Xianying, being 56 None of the children passed their parents Most of the characters introduced in DW8 besides Lu LingQi are not so high on the list. Also like other said the 2 Qiaos, known for their beauty and musical skills, are in the 70s.

It's funny how Liao Hua is so high in popularity when he isn't even playable. And I am glad to see hate for all these fictional Shu characters they keep adding instead of actual important ones, like Liao Hua, Wang Ping and Zhang Yi Jiang Wan and Fei Yi. Or ones who would be extremely interesting narratively, like Ma Su, Huang Hao or, once again, Liao Hua. It's also a travesty what they did to Xiahou Ba, guy has one of the most interesting narrative arcs in the latter half of the book and they kind of ruin it by making him a manlet... And Deng Ai, the most competent officer of the second of the the three kingdoms, and potentially one of the top 10 best of the entire era, gets turned into some weird barbarian dude. He was basically Zhang Liao 2 historically! Dynasty Warriors is kinda derp sometimes.

Love this list except for Shu getting the shorter end of the stick. I've always known that Wei was the favorite (probably because they win(?)) in the end, but I was always drawn to Liu Bei's just and righteous character. If I had to choose one character from faction excluding other, it would be Ma Chao, Zhang Fe, and Zhou Tai in no particular order and based entirely on the way they are presented in the DW series. At least they were ranked high.
