@@hexaphone9417 that's really smart--and instead of warning the player on what to avoid, he can tell the player when the opponent is most vulnerable for a counter. Like Little Mac's entire games say to do. So for example, after some flavor text Doc Louis says something like: "But back to the fight, son. If you see that bear (Banjo-Kazooie) charge up his Wonderwing, use your shield. Your normal counter can't work while he's using it, but everything else is fair game. Once he hits ya, get 'em back harder with a grab!"

I think that playing Little Mac in Smash is very much representative of how you should play Punch-Out!!; though it seems no one knows anything about that. You have to use his speed to dodge attacks, and only attack when you see an opening. It's quite counter-intuitive for a very fast character in a fighting game not to be a rushdown, but it makes sense; you can't rush down your foes in Punch-Out!!, either. You have to be patient, watch your foe, predict and react to their movements, and only go for attacks and combos when you have the chance.

Plus, have stars ever been gained in the series by dodging? All I've ever known stars or meter to be gained from in the series was punching opponents at certain times. Of course, no meter or stars were ever gained by getting hit, but I still think the intention on that side was to make it a comeback mechanic.

He was obviously ALSO Little Mac, his wireframe skill was unfortunately banned from use in official boxing matches but he managed to bust it out again as a costume in Smash Bros. Mac is still nettled that that cheap hack Peter Punch's transparency skill was perfectly legal but his wireframing was "too much of an advantage", but Little Mac is used to getting shafted.

I instantly loved Mac in Smash. At the time I didn't even know much about him besides the Wii Punch out game. Combining this with the fact I just love boxing in general and practice it as a good workout, he became my main the moment he became an option to play. From the get go, I of course disliked his recovery, but my love for boxing and the Punch Out game made me realize that was the point. He's a boxer, a fighter who has great speed, power, and dodging capability, powerful combo potential, a powerful comback mechanic, and takes advantage of his opponent's mistakes and punishes. Of course he doesn't have good aerial ability, cause if he did he would've gotten the same hate Bayonetta did, more than he already got. Within my friend group, everyone agrees Little Mac is not the best by a long shot, but when I play him, people are actually more careful cause I use every ability he has to my advantage. After I learned more of his history, it just made me love playing him even more, and now in the military, my colleagues got a new perspective after watching me dominate with Little Mac against opponents who played characters like Ness, K. Rool, Ganondorf, Mega Man, and even Zelda, and when the DLC characters came out: Pyra/Mythra, Sora, Min Min, and Sephiroth. Despite them being leagues above Little Mac in many ways, being able to strike fear and have people back off with who would normally have no issue with Little Mac is satisfying. In short, Little Mac is badass and people who hated him in Smash just completely missed his whole purpose and play style. It just came naturally to me, and he's still my favorite character, besides K. Rool now too

Man, this just upsets me lol. I remember back when I was younger I used to rent Punch Out for the Wii from Blockbuster back when that was a thing, so when I heard that he was getting into Smash 4, that had to be the most excited I got for a character inclusion since like, Sonic got in Brawl. I definitely like to play him in game so it's not disappointing on that front, but to see a character and franchise I love so much have so many people turn a blind eye to solely because he's bad in competitive Smash, it's just... unfortunate.

Honestly, I adore Little Mac. I tried with the competitive scene for a little bit with 4 and ultimate, but I remember playing as him once and feeling such a rush of playing a character with many flaws and coming out on top after so much hardship. Its quite a shame that so many people don't realize that Little Mac, like many of the fighters in Punch Out!!, is a gimmicky character. Try and approach him in his own game, like the casual community did, and you'll find that he's a powerhouse, which led to people saying that he's too good. Figure out and exploit his weaknesses, like the competitive community did, and you'll find that he's somewhat of a pushover, which led to people saying that he's too bad. Still, the idea of the underdog story is a time-told classic, and I adore every second I spend playing Mac. I think I'll be a Little Mac player until the day I die.

fun fact: most the fandom considers the characters from the Arcade game, original NES Punch-Out (and the 2009 reboot), and Super Punch-Out's protagonists as different characters. the arcade character is Peter Punch, the NES and Wii character is Little Mac, and the Super Punch-Out character is called Birdie Mac.

been a mac main since DAY 1, always loved the fact that his underdog thematic works through gameplay, he is by far the best comeback character (when on last stock) because everyone gets cocky and underestimates what you can really do, I've gotten to elite smash un ultimate with mac only, and in sm4sh (granted i was on 3ds) I could consistently win with the character, gotta play him like his game/a real boxer.

Little Mac may not get much love in Smash or even his own series at times but at least he's been given plenty here with this spectacular video showcasing his history. When Next Level Games was purchased, my immediate thought was hopes for a new Punch-Out game... though it'll be weird to play the game without the Balance Board; it's how I always played Punch-Out Wii.

It's sad that Mac was hated by the Smash fans! I like this character; despite his small size the teenager is brave and perseverant! I admire his courage :D Also, it's impressive to see a tiny guy like him beating thousands of muscled mans who are faster and stronger than him! Mac was not the only character who's hard to control| use in Smash. I got the one on my Wii and ALWAYS had a hard time with: Snake cause i can't aim with his missiles, Bowser cause he's slow and it's hard to jump with him, Olimar cause i don't understand how to properly uses the Pikmins, Ness and Luca cause i can't bounced back on the stage if i'm ejected. Every time i try to practice with thoses characters, it's difficult! It doesn't make me hate them :) I had fun with my sister even if using them is hard!

As someone who mainly uses Lucas, i agree with the mentality of characters who are meant to be played in an unique way to win, you don't need a character that feels the exact same as Mario or something, the fact that you loose with some of these characters merely means you ain't playing their playstyle, it doesn't mean the character itself is bad, it just means that they're supposed to be played in a different way

I have to 100% disagree with the guy who says "Mac is boring and he encourages you to play boring" I can't play Mac because I'm bad. But watching People who know how to play him is always exciting to me. I don't like 7 minute games where 6 minutes is spent trying to safely land hits in neutral. Mac encourages you to "Get in there." To me that is way better to watch than a Ness, Link, or Villager who camps projectiles the whole time.

This video was recommended to me on my youtube feed and I have 2 small things I'd like to discuss. First off when you were talking about little Mac being a joke, I was surprised to see the bit of dialogue between him and Mike Tyson where Tyson says "Is this kid a joke? Where's the real challenger?" not be included. Also another interesting tidbit. For Punch-Out on the Nintendo Wii, Princess Peach was originally planned to be an opponent, but due to society's view on a certain issue, she was replaced by Donkey Kong.
