I think the main struggle/villain here is Andy's private circle of friends and boyfriend. They all started thinking fashion is a joke so it was hard to think of it as work. So when Andy starts taking it seriously and treating it like a job, her circle still couldn't fathom that what she does is work. So if she missed an event for work, it seems like a poor excuse to them. Sad really, to have a circle that drags you down for focusing on your career and not respecting what you do.

I would be annoyed too if I had to work with someone with no INTEREST and respect for the job that I love. Emily might not of been that great, but she waiting for Andy to fail or give up as opposed to sabotaging her, herself. It's pretentious, but not malicious. Yeah, I'd rather have a coworker like Emily, than beginning Andy. Emily and Nigel covered her so many times.
@RandomPerson-bj1su2 жыл бұрын
@@mo58487 Yes, actually. Emily might be snide and rude to Andy, but she never gets in the way of Andy's job. In fact, she does what she can to make sure Andy does her job right by giving her clear instructions and guiding her when needed, because even though she doesn't like Andy, she understands how important it is that Andy does her job right, because she's Miranda's assistant, and Miranda is a really important person who makes really important decisions on a daily basis. That's professionalism, which frankly, Andy lacked. From the get go, Andy went into an interview at a magazine without having done any form of research on the magazine, the fashion field and her potential boss, not even having heard of the boss's name even though Miranda is so famous. Even when she does get the job, she makes no effort to change herself to adapt to the job better, telling herself that she's only going to stay there for a year so she doesn't need to make any real effort to commit to her role. She doesn't try to take an interest in the fashion world and try to understand the true mechanics of it and how it can affect so many people, because she can't get over her own prejudices - she constantly thinks anything and everything related to fashion is trivial and nothing worth thinking so deeply about. Even just looking at the way she was dressed. You think it was mean that everyone was constantly criticising her clothes? Well the fact is that she's working as the assistant to probably one of the most important figures in the fashion industry, and yet just by looking at her you can tell she doesn't know, and doesn't care about fashion. Anyone would doubt her professionalism. And to be honest, I think that's one of the biggest reasons why Emily was so hostile towards Andy - she saw from the very beginning how completely unqualified Andy was for the job, a job she knows a million other girls who are far more qualified would kill for, and also a job she previous had, and must have worked so hard for. I mean seriously, Miranda herself admitted it was a risk hiring Andy, because you're getting someone who has absolutely no knowledge of the fashion industry, to the point she's never even heard of the biggest magazine in the industry, to work for the editor-in-chief of said magazine. And when they began working, it was clear how uncommitted Andy was to the job, not even bothering to dress for the part. Frankly, I'd rather have Emily as a coworker than Andy, because even though Emily's hard to get along with, she's reliable. I can count on her to do what needs to be done so that no one gets into trouble and everything runs as smoothly as possible at the end of the day. I cannot say the same for Andy; I'd constantly be worried she'd make a mistake, and also be irritated by her lack of effort to improve herself. Even though it was subtle, Emily was definitely nicer to Andy after her makeover, because it wasn't just that Andy was dressed nicer, Andy also just all round became better at her job. And yes, it was kind of unfair for her to be so harsh to Andy when she got the Paris job, but understand that Paris was always a lifelong dream for Emily, something she worked really hard for. I mean, hate her if you want, but no one can deny Emily worked HARD. Fashion is her life, Miranda is her idol, working for Miranda was her dream job and going to Paris fashion week was the pinnacle. And all that was taken away from her. Of course she'd be bitter, and to make things worse, it was all taken away by someone who, even though she was getting good at her job, was there for less than a year, and has even, on multiple occasions in the past said she doesn't care about fashion. She knows Paris means nothing to Andy, yet Andy gets the job, and she doesn't. Even if Andy had no choice, can you honestly expect her to just accept things with grace? Also at the end, she didn't really insult Andy, she was just being shy, because she couldn't admit she was genuinely happy. It was clear in that exchange, even surely to Andy, there was absolutely no hostility. She even complimented Andy, saying to Andy's replacement she has some big shoes to fill, meaning she has to live up to a really high standard set by her predecessor, Andy.

The writers really made a mistake by leaving the event as a birthday. If they wanted us to like Nate, then it should have been his first restaurant opening or something. Something that feels equal to a major work event like the one Andy is attending. Something that cannot be rescheduled the way a birthday can. That way his concerns seem more valid. And it makes Andy's guilt and decision at the end of the movie more sensible. Especially considering we never actually see him making a sacrifice for Andy the way he expects her too. He says he would.... he also says he would support her stripping if it was with dignity. But the problem is that these promises are hypothetical. The audience never gets to see him having to prove any of it. Only Andy does. Which is why he seems to most adult women to be manipulative, controlling, and selfish. Because we recognize these kinds of unequal demands as problematic longterm. I'm pretty sure the writers didn't intend that. I think they just cut too much of his book character. He was kinder and more supportive in the book. But that was cut so we could see more sympathetic scenes with Nigel, Miranda, and Emily. The filmmakers took the time to give these characters their redemption moments and removed them from villain status. But they ran out of time with Nate. And so, many of us cannot like him.

Originally, they were supposed to go to a concert, with Andy showing up late. However, that was scrapped, as the movie’s screenwriter said it was too expensive to shoot. However, didn’t Andy’s friend have an exhibition at a gallery or something? That could’ve been the event Andy missed if the writers wanted the public to have sympathy for her friends and boyfriend.
@Thehouseoffail2 жыл бұрын
@@EAY2211 I could see the friend being mad, but I don't see how that would gain Andy sympathy. Since it wasn't his art exhibit. And he still doesn't sacrifice or need support for that scenario. But, you did touch on the reason why I said his birthday should have been something like opening his first restaurant. Like an art exibition, it's a big enough event that it cannot be moved. And it would make us more sympathetic to a partner who was let down at an event like that. A birthday is a birthday.

I know for a fact that some people around me thought the worst of me. But, I was just growing, earning, becoming something and stepping into the zone. The good part is that we are happy with our jobs. The ones who do understand you, will understand you and the ones who don’t, won’t and will not. This is one of the movies few flaws, though it's a pretty big one. Everyone is angry at Nate (me too) but the movie ends by implying Nate was in the right and Andy needed to see that. If the movie really wanted us to feel that message, there needed to be more complexity to their relationship than "you missed my birthday, who even are you anymore?" A more relatable and believable scenario would demonstrate Andy being under intense stress which affects how she treats Nate, Nate trying to help but either being shut out or out of his depth to understand. Maybe Nate has his own troubles at work or with family and is frustrated that Andy is too busy and self obsessed to be there for him. After a while she's gone so often it feels like they dont even have a relationship. In the movie he accuses her of changing, but at no point does it show her treat Nate or her friends poorly (quite the opposite). She cant always be there, but she never tells them they arent important or that their concerns are trivial. Instead she's juggling the two halves of her life as best she can and not being cut any slack on either side. Hard work and career building can be very hard on relationships, but missing a birthday to keep your job is not a selfish, relationship killing event as depicted here. Instead, Nate comes off as a selfish ass that makes no attempt at compromise, understanding, or forgiveness while Andy does everything she can to show him how much he means to her even when her job is taking over her life and he doesnt even want to talk. And yet at the end its Andy that needs to appologize?

There IS more complexity to the relationship! Has anyone even watched the whole movie? Andy gradually withdraws more and more while complaining about how awful her job is, and Nate is nothing but encouraging in telling her she doesn't have to keep working this soul-sucking job. He isn't pressuring her with 'but we need you to be earning money, so suck it up!' He'd rather she were happy and healthy (she's so stressed she loses weight to an unhealthy level). And then she simply keeps ignoring his reassurances and focuses on her job like it's the only one in New York City 🙄 She could have worked as a waitress while interning unpaid at a newspaper she ACTUALLY wanted to work at, like most sensible people would. And then she has no work-life balance at all - OF COURSE Nate is upset and worried! It's not about his birthday, it's about how this job is destroying Andy and she won't let him help her by taking his simple advice to QUIT. Her dad had to loan them money anyway - Nate was really kind to never ONCE bring up how little she contributed financially despite working all the time. He would have supported her taking the time to look for a better job, as would her parents. She didn't NEED to work that specific draining job, and Nate never once tried to make her feel like she did!

@colechapman69763 жыл бұрын
Andy deserves friends who would not drag her down but rather lift her up. Also, the fact that they would happily accept gifts from her new job and then chastise her for prioritizing it over her so-called friends really speaks to how self-centered those people are. Furthermore, that boyfriend's character was beyond annoying. How could he sit there and say that she should quit the job when it clearly helped her overcome her shortcomings throughout the film? She really grew into a competent person who was confident in their abilities to perform in a high-stakes environment. That type of workplace environment is rare to come by but is crucial for people who want to succeed later on in life. Plus add on to the fact that the boyfriend clearly doesn't get that working for Miranda offers her a chance to land her own dream job as a journalist which I would imagine is what any good boyfriend should want for his girlfriend. Besides, what would all these people rather her do? Not work? Work at some restaurant or something all her life? Her boyfriend and regular friends also don't seem very caring or sympathetic towards Andy's struggles too. In fact, they make her feel guilty for focusing on the Miranda job instead of a group of friends who clearly exist to make mean and demeaning comments about her career path. As if what they do is so much better or fulfilling. At least she is pursuing her career by landing an exclusive gig that opens up a ton of doors in any field. It was actually this job, the one they derided her for every time they met, which allowed Andy the opportunity to become a journalist in NYC which was her dream and whole purpose in life. So they should've been more encouraging towards her, be more understanding of the situation, and not be jerks and belittle her every time they met. Andy should've left them all the first time they cracked a joke about her job and stole her phone at the restaurant.

"Ugh, you know work, I can't really predict... no yeah, I will be there I promise" *Nicks' birthday is on a Friday (busiest day of the week) but he is able to convince one of his coworkers to cover for him that night (morning of) "See you tonight, don't be late!" "I won't, I promise - love you" (during Nick's party/gala) **As friends gather at the restaurant where Nick is celebrating, everyone is asking Nick where Andy is, when she's coming. At first, he smiles and plays it off cool, defending her and telling them she's running a little late and that this kind of thing happens sometimes - he texts her asking for an update. Dinner gets uncomfortable for Nick. His friends continue to ask him every few minutes if he's heard from Andy yet - some looks visibly baffled that she is missing the entire dinner. Nick is embarrassed by the sympathizing and absence of his girlfriend. He looks at his phone, no response from her - he imagines her having a great time at the gala, wearing fancy clothes, chatting with famous people, maybe even forgetting about him? He steps outside to call her, no response. He calls again. Still, no response. He remembers how Andy never misses a call from Miranda, even answering the phone one time during sex. Mix of worry and anger start to build - why can't she simply text him an "I'm fine, sorry i'm so late"? Nick's friends decide to distract him and take him out for drinks. As they near their usual bar, Nick decides he isn't in the mood for drinks. His friends try and convince him to stay and have at least one round with them, but he refuses, and walks off alone. He's conflicted - he knows the situation with Andy. He knows how this is only a year long thing, how her bitch of a boss is, how her boss has taken so much time away from them these past months, and now, even on his birthday, she is still able to keep Andy from him, and on a whim. Andy walks up to his apartment, and slams the door. The silence in their shared rental is deafening. He looks down at his phone, still no reply, no call. He ruminates in silence for nearly an hour when suddenly his phone rings. It's Andy. He ignores it. What was there to say? Does he yell? Does he try and be understanding? It's already 11:30pm, and he has a long day of work tomorrow. The night is over. He went out of his way to take the day off to spend with Andy thinking surely of all days - she'd make an effort to be available today. These last months have felt like long-distance. He realizes that even on his birthday, she still chooses her job over him.** I don't know..I feel that as a viewer, we are put in Andy's paradigm and the fashion world. But I'm sure her schedule and work had caused a lot of additional strain to their relationship. Who knows, they may have even just moved in together, but now somehow feel further apart. Just saying.. it's worth considering the world outside Andy too before loading it all on Nate! Being a chef is no piece of cake either and I'm sure he's had to make sacrifices as well!

Keep in mind that even the actor said his character was based around masculinity faults. He felt like he wasn’t man enough because she was beginning to excel past his level and earn enough to be able to afford more pricey things and the fact that she just sort of fell into a career so fast while he would always talk about working so hard.

If I have an important job to do, nothing can stop me.

The point is there was nothing important about it. Miranda should have learned the names of the people she wanted to talk to instead of expecting Andy and Emily to do it for her, and let them go home! It's not like they were getting networking opportunities; they had to dance attendance on Miranda every second! Nate and her friends are upset not so much because Andy is neglecting THEM, she's neglecting HERSELF for a job that isn't going anywhere. Unlike Emily, Andy didn't want the Paris dresses; she wanted to be a journalist. A fashion magazine PA role would not actually have helped her career progression in real life.

What bothers me most is he was unwilling to understand. If my boyfriend has something very important event and it’s related to his job and it just happens to be on my birthday I’m going to understand. As long as he comes home to me, I’m perfectly happy. The fact that she even left anyway proves that she does care about him and love him and he still didn’t appreciate it. She could’ve stayed at that party the entire night and not come back to the next day.

Yeah, at least talk about it. She even said "Can we talk about this?"

People make such a big deal out of birthdays. I mean he is not 5. I don't care for birthdays anymore. Just spend the time you get with each other.

Men like her bf would embarrass their girlfriend if she didn’t work but also would be mad if she was more successful than him

At the end of the day, it shows how a very demanding boss could wreck your personal life.

WTF is wrong with people in these sections? Enough of the hate for the friends and the boyfriend! Maybe they could've supported her a little more yes, but think if it was you! And you had a friend, spouse, whomever someone close to you start to prioritize you less and less to the point where they completely shut you out and abandon you with no commitment left because of their job! You mean to tell me you would let that slide without complaining?! LOL Y'all don't even know what you're talking about! Relationships should come before your job! Period! Unless you all are money grabbers who don't give a crap about anyone else. Jobs are temporary and come and go but real relationships endure everything.

I think most of the people on here must be those who are chronically online because they have no real-life relationships.
