The Devilish Tenant (Le Locataire diabolique) it is a 1909 film by Méliès: • Georges Méliès
A traveler finds accommodation in an inn, he is placed in a room without furniture and still being restored so, annoyed, he throws out the window the painter who is painting the walls. Alone, the man pulls out of his suitcase a sheet from which he reveals a table, a trunk, a bedside table, an armchair, a fireplace, a clock, two candlesticks, a piano, some paintings and two large mirrors. The strange gentleman sets the table and, again from the trunk, he takes out some chairs and then his guests. Suddenly the hotel keeper bursts in and runs away scared at the sight of so many people. At the end of the meal, the gentleman sits down and reads the newspaper. The usher arrives with the bill to be paid, but the man refuses to pay and flees the room. At this point all the objects in the room come to life and the distraught caretaker runs to his wife. Meanwhile in the room the magician is packing his bags, then he pulls out a staircase and escapes from the window. The caretaker, accompanied by the hotel owner and a policeman, enters the room and finds only the bedside table: in anger he hits it with a broom making it explode and causing the collapse of the ceiling.

Melies actually was a magician. He pioneered just about every aspect of film but he was a stop action genius. Best films of the era!

Was the piano added a decade later? it sounds more like stride and less like ragtime, would have been cutting edge for it's time. Are my ears broken?

This must have been so labor intensive.... but, who was paying for these films? did they play in theatres, or did people own home projectors? i can't imagine this being a very lucrative profession - who's going to pay for a ticket to the theatre to watch a 5 minute film ?

Méliès and his actors came from the theater. Almost all of his films were shot in the theater. In those days you only paid admission to the cinema, then each theater had its own uninterrupted program of short films, but there were no theaters either, often just a circus tent...

I think he bankrupted not long after this period. He started in the late 1800s
