Everyone in this episode, except maybe Buddy and Sally, got to show off their extra talents. Even Richard Deacon, who plays usually straight-man Mel Cooley, got to dance around with a pair of giant scissors in the dream sequence. Richie Petrie, the adorable Larry Mathews, got to belt out, "You're The Top", a couple of times. The end bit with Richie, Laura, and Rob singing together, is the perfect end to the episode. One of the series best.

There was more than one episode where Sally sang and at least one where Sally sang and Buddy played the cello. They were all great entertainers.

22:22 the extra in the middle in the background appears in most of 50’s and 60’s TV sitcoms as a walk on with no dialogue! Especially in the Andy Griffins show!

Jamie Farr plays the coffee delivery guy. He later portrays Cpl. Maxwell Q. Klinger on MASH for eleven years. He was very good, and underrated in this role. Speaking of puppets, wasn't Mel Cooley, Alan Brady's puppet?

When I was a kid, a friend re-enacted the marionette dream sequence from this episode. But he got it slightly wrong. As Rob, he said: “Hello? I want to go to Kansas.” As the operator: “But sir, isn’t that a little far away?” As Rob: “No. I *live* in Kansas.” We both thought it was hilarious.

You mean the Jim Crow laws that mandated segregation in the south? Or the fact that all abortion was illegal and women died from self abortions at a horrendous rate or were forced to have children they didn’t want? Or the fact that women were not allowed to have credit in their own names? Or the fact that women had to quit their jobs the moment their pregnancy started showing? Which of those was “so good?”

The "man in ladies underwear" on the airplane with Rob is the great character actor Jesse White. He also had a couple of guest shots on That Girl, starring Marlo Thomas, playing her agent, and a director. The family connection strikes again. Danny Thomas, who was involved with the DVD show is, of course, Marlo's father.

My, how times have changed. Not even a thought to sending Sally down to DC to hear the singer, even though she's displayed her own singing talents on the show. Even she doesn't object to being passed over. But that would have solved everyone's problem.

Jesse White was the perfect companion to Rob Petrie on the airplane. He was supportive, and a good listener. Not overacting, as he was known to do, in other guest spots on sitcoms. Notably on a few episodes of "That Girl."

It's Mel who is stupid. Just because his wife is Alan Brady's sister and hence he doesn't have to prioritise between his family and work does not mean others don't have that problem. Rob loving his son and wife and wanting to respect their wishes does not mean he doesn't respect his work.
@zanti4132
@zanti4132 Жыл бұрын
There being no other options to Rob going to Washington is a plot point that I find quite unbelievable. Surely Buddy or Sally could have gone. Mel does dismiss Buddy as a candidate, but his reason is nonsensical, even vindictive. And why is Sally not even mentioned? Is it because she is a woman? And if Buddy and Sally are both unavailable, find somebody else - it's a weekly TV show, surely the staff is pretty big. Come to think of it, why doesn't Mel go? He's the producer and dedicated to the show and all. With all that said, it's still a good episode. The premise may be totally contrived, but the dream sequence makes this episode memorable.
@nsme1965
@nsme1965 Жыл бұрын
@@zanti4132 Mel himself should have gone. He mentions many times in later episodes that talent scouting is his job as producer. This is a consequence of hiring brothers-in-law for a job. They take it for granted and boss around the people who genuinely worked to get their jobs. Buddy's hatred is understandable.
