That's the key to any healthy diet - it absolutely has to be long term sustainable. If you're gritting your teeth and feel you're choking on sawdust to lose weight, you will only snap and boomerang back. Most gain back more than they lost, each time they chose radical diets. I did take all the nutritional courses and the doctor is right. There is no one size fits all, but also, radical weight loss diets are absolutely counterproductive. I've warned so many people, and watched them boomerang just as I warned they would. It's great you found the slow and easy route. A great thing to do, if you need to get fairly strict, but I would only advise that if you have a serious condition that needs immediate control over, is to give yourself a freebie day to have whatever you most like for one day. It keeps you disciplined, gives you that outlet so you don't snap and pitch it all, and plus, you just enjoy it that much more.

I was already walking a lot and had been doing so for nearly a decade so that was in check. Just made that one change and didnt even notice I had lost 10

I've been addicted to carbs for about 10 years. Lots of chocolate, ,biscuits, cake, pasta, takeaway food etc. So much sugar made me crave more and I felt constantly hungry. I was miserable, always tired and walking for exercise was exhausting. It was when I realized keeping people addicted to their high carb products is what packaged food companies actually aim for, made me determined not to play their game. I wasn't going to sacrifice my health any longer just so they could make a profit. It's been 2 months (1 month on keto before going low carb) and I've lost 20lbs (almost 10kg) and I enjoy walking approximately 23 miles (35km) per week. I feel as fit and healthy as I did 20 years ago. I just turned 69. No more hypoglycaemic attacks, I've saved money and no longer crave sugarly garbage.

The ketogenic diet and fasting really worked for me too. I lost weight slower than others and after 6 months of keto, I lost 30 pounds and weighed what I did when I was in my best shape. Unfortunately, I went back to the SAD (and I still kept losing weight at first!), but then slowly have gained some back. I know I need to get back on it. Hey, one thing that might inspire other ladies who are going through menopause (like me), is that when I was eating the keto way, I didn’t get any hot flashes! No anxiety attacks either! Sugar probably causes a lot of things that we don’t realize.

No hot-flashes is a truly miraculous side-effect!🎉🤗 We are all unique, but so very few of us understand how much Immune Hormone/(Vit) D our species needs. Once fat, we know our level has dropped too low, ruining our healthy microbiome, letting cortisol (inflammation), insulin (fat-storing) & ghrelin (hunger) run wild and trashing our proper deep sleep paralysis needed for nightly maintenance. Get yourself at least above 40ng/ml=100nmol/L, but far preferably between 70-80ng/ml=175-200nmol/L to get back what once was lost.❤

Absolutely - 100%! We attribute A LOT of things to separate diseases or issues: aging, obesity, menopause. All of the symptoms are coming from (or worsened by) insulin resistance or poor metabolic health. Dr. Elizabeth Bright works with women who are going through menopause to eat carnivore and high fat and teaches that menopause should not be a thing at all. I, too, got rid of hot flashed by going low carb. They went away almost immediately. Ninety-three percent of American adults are considered insulin resistant. And every modern chronic disease (cancer, type 2, heart disease, ADHD, Alzheimer’s, anxiety, depression, IBD, autoimmune, etc) is caused or worsened by insulin resistance. Imagine if we were just taught to decrease carbs and seed oils and fast, instead of diagnosed with some disease and thrown a prescription while walking out the door? I think we’d be amazed at how much totally went away (or, at least, got way better).

Four years of strict keto with intermittent fasting and a two-month flirtation with strict carnivore has produced zero weight loss (5’5”, 240 lbs, age 66.5). I don’t snack; I have never once cheated on the diet/lifestyle. I won’t return to carbs but weight loss clearly isn’t going to happen. For all those whose weight “fell off”, all I can say is that it must be nice. Intermittent fasting of up to and including a week at a time, plus a separate two months of eating only four meals per week changed nothing. I have given up.

I love eating low carb and adding higher amounts of fat instead. It’s been 3-4 years for me and I’ve never been more in control of my weight. People are so misinformed about how and what we should be eating! I too crave carbs though…usually potatoes. I do eat those on occasion. @@JohnJones-tx6rt I thought it was nuts (no pun intended) as well, but I did my study my friend... your paradigm needs to shift... your assumptions have some truth and error... look into it if you like. When I first heard about fruits have too much sugar, I thought, it's fructose, not glucose, what's the issue... then I looked at the medical research, heard the arguments, and the tons of testimonies. The testimony from Canadian genius Dr Jordan Peterson and his daughter too, sharing all of the cronic ailments they had, but having gone carnivore for nearly a decade, their testimonies got my attention... then I dug into the evidence and listened to the arguments and testimonies. As for Magnesium and Potassium, I am taking supplements currently, but have a 55 year old friend that has been doing this for years who just pinches some salt into water and drinks it before bedtime for electrolytes. It is a powerful way to reverse Type 2 Diabetes. One thing of interest is when you eliminate Carbohydrates so that your energy source via Ketosis becomes fats instead of glucose to glycogen, your body needs very little Vitamin C.

@@stephaniesamra7960 A healthy maintenance keto is calorie-divided 75% fat 20% protein 5% net carbs Low insulin keeps the high dietary fat from being itself stored as more fat. But, to lose our own excess fat, we can probably eat less dietary fat, once our bodies become well fat-adapted, (3-6 weeks at under 10 net-carbs a day?) Then it has learned how to easily access those heavy store-rooms we have to carry around everywhere!
@LauraB.335
@LauraB.335 6 ай бұрын
@@stephaniesamra7960- are you “on keto” or have you been able to get into ketosis because of what and when you’re eating? Many people think of keto as a list of foods. It’s not and the list isn’t magic. Keto is a metabolic state of being that comes about when the body no longer has enough carbohydrate coming externally to use readily use glucose for fuel, so it’s forced to switch to producing and using ketones. Two things need to be in place for ketones to be produced: 1) insulin needs to be low enough AND 2) carb intake needs to be restricted enough that the body switched to fat for fuel. If someone is real insulin resistant, especially if they’re eating every day and not fasting, it can take a while for insulin to go down and ketones to be produced consistently enough. Some argue that you shouldn’t eat too much fat, others argue that fat is great at first to help get into ketosis, then slow it down when trying to lose fat. And, yet, others have lost a lot of fat by eating a lot of fat. Regardless, the goal, is to get into ketosis. If you aren’t in ketosis, you aren’t “on keto.”

I agree, once you have gotten fat, the best way to reduce is to restrict carbs. Carbs are well tolerated by about 10-15% of the population, the rest of us, not so much. You can have dessert, but you can not have dessert for breakfast, lunch, dinner and then more dessert. In 1900, the per capita consumption of sugar was 5lbs, now its 135lbs! We are not designed to consume such quantities. The Romans had their lead, we have our sugar.

I hypothesize that carbs are only well tolerated by those few who always maintain evolutionary levels of Immune System Hormone/(Vit) D above 40ng/ml or 100nmol/L! The rest of us are at highest risk of getting fat and sickly! High supplementation and/or time-controlled unprotected Summer/Semi/Tropical☀UVB can cheaply keep us all healthy. But losing pounds once gained requires low carbs & intermittent fasting, the long-lasting effective methods most often chosen by doctors to lose their own excess weight, but seldom recommended to their patients!

Processed carbs (including alcohol) are nutritionally empty, but complex carbs... whole grains, legumes, tubers are the foods our brains and bodies run on, and are consumed in all the Blue Zones, the healthiest people on earth. The fear of them is unfounded. I myself was told by my doctors to eat the standard low carb, diabetic diet and take drugs to "control symptoms", and did so for many years. After seeing the illuminating movie "Forks Over Knives", and learning of the curative power of a whole food plant based diet, I decided to put it to the test for one month. My doctor was amazed that my blood sugars were now normal on a diet high in complex carbs and without the drugs! i also went on to lose over 100 lbs and have kept it off for over 10 years. Turns out the medical profession is still pushing the outdated carb restriction paradigm which only controls symptoms of high blood sugar but does nothing to fix insulin resistance, the actual cause if which is.... nutritionfacts.org/blog/fat-is-the-cause-of-type-2-diabetes/

Get healthy to lose weight, not lose weight to get healthy. The key is to stabilize insulin regardless of diet. Humans are omnivores. We require all of the essential micronutrients in different amounts. Interrstingly, carbohydrate is not an essential macronutrient. Fasting is 1/3 of health with the other 1/3 being lifestyle. Problem is refined carbs and processed seed oils.

In the U.S., it's not quite this simple, there is another major game changer going on. Dr. Dhand, I would appreciate a segment on the epidemic of subclinical low thyroid in the U.S., especially in people such as myself - female, post-menopausal, over 60, and it's genetic inheritance. This type of thyroid disorder is very difficult to diagnose, most doctors won't believe a person who says they have the condition. Finally a naturepath diagnosed mine. I've been on a 1600 calorie a day diet for decades and it's the devil for me to lose weight. I don't eat sweets or sweet carbs, pasta at all and very little bread. I went off carbs about 5 years ago and tried keto and carnivore at age 75 and it worked. Before that cutting back on carbs worked, but by 75 that no longer worked. I cycle on and off no carbs eating things like say 300 Gr sweet potatoes for several weeks, then back to keto or carnivore. I lost 25 kilos and have had no trouble keeping it off. With carb restriction I would gain it back. I think in my own case I had overdone carbs long enough that nothing less than no, or very low carb was going to work for my compromised metabolism. But it has taken years of experimenting and adjusting to work out my regime. What I only realised lately is that ruthlessly sticking to whole real foods with minimal processing is really important too. 😅

I kept a journal of everything i ate daily trying to keep my calories at 1500. Even when i went to a restaurant, i kept track of the calories. I also increased my exercise. It works but i will have to do this for life as my health problems can make my weight fluctuate. Im 74 and in control of my weight.

Ok so I am mostly vegan I do eat a small amount of goat or sheep feta cheese and about 4 oz of fish or turkey or eggs a week sometimes less and the less I eat the better I feel but get ridiculed and ribbed by well... everyone I am amazed at how aggressive meat eaters are in their opinions. This is an interesting thing that happened recently this summer with my favorite couple who helped me build a small chicken coop and they are both on a carnivore diet and when working with them when I was in close proximity, I noticed they both had a really bad odor and when I say bad I mean like rotten flesh stinking in the sun bad and when finished they said lets take a swim in the pool and I was so relieved because the smell was nearly nauseating and I thought great that will help, and we plunged in and as I was swimming around you know in the chlorinated pool I realized I could still smell them. Wow that convinces me that it cannot be a good plan.

Dear doctor thanks for your videos and the info. Two remarks, back in the day not long ago average daily calorie intake for a woman not very active was 1800. In recent years they sneakily raised it to 2000. Same with obesity, if BMI was over 20 it was considered obese nowadays it's 25. Another remark is the 45-65% energy intake for carbs, how do people know how much % is that. I didn't know myself, I now count them and have an app to tell me. Maybe it's an idea to make photos of meals and put the % beneath it so people have an idea. Thanks for your advice and vids 😊

I agree with cutting out crap carbs like foods made from sugar, refined flours, even many supposed whole grain flours like many breads. Many of these foods also contain fats and hydrogenated oils. I also suggest cutting out the crap that people put on their carbs like frying in oils or drowning your foods in oils (even supposedly healthy oils like virgin olive which has 100 calories per tablespoon) and butter and cheese. But I don't necessarily agree to cutting out good carbs like those that are from whole food sources with all of their fiber and nutrients intact. These are mostly low calorie and nutrient rich foods. I also think eating most fruits should be fine unless your a fruit addict. But eat them whole rather than drinking juice which had the fiber stripped out. If you are overweight, you can find a calorie density chart that will list fruits and vegetables from lowest calorie density to highest calorie density. Always eat green leafy vegetables and cruciferous. Very healthy and low calorie. Be careful eating carbs with highly fatty foods, however, as the fat can interfere with the insulin response leading to elevated blood sugar for an extended period of time.

I have done the same, losing 100 pounds and keeping it off for the last six months. If I let my carbs creep over the 20 total grams of carbs a day, I find that I start to crave the foods that got me into trouble in the first place. As a morbidly obese person, I had lost control of my relationship with carbohydrates. Moderation was not possible for me. Now that my carbohydrates are vastly restricted, it is giving me a new freedom to enjoy food without the constant cravings to eat more and more. Seems paradoxical but I find it to be true.

@Robert Are you sure you kept it below 20 grams?? Because an 🍎Apple has about 27-33 grams of Carbs depending on the size. Also, once you've on a Ketogenic diet, the most notorious side effect that the "media, blogs, and vested scientists in that industry" left out was that your bowel movement stops completely because it's impossible to get the fiber requirement for the body without carbs. This side effect is a hallmark that your body is in a Ketogenic state. You'll be bleeding out stones out of your backdoor.

For me it’s such an easy way of eating. I don’t weigh,measure, or count anything. None of that nasty low fat stuff. Just real food. I’m rarely hungry. It’s so easy to sustain for the long haul. I don’t consider it a “weight loss” diet, but a lifestyle change. I give myself permission to have a treat on special occasions, so I never feel deprived. So far I’ve only chosen to indulge once. Most of the time I decide it’s not worth it. 😊

To be more specific, it's Simple Carbs from refined and processed foods that are the problem (pasta, bread, baked goods and pretty much anything that comes in a package). On the other hand, Complex Carbs are "good" carbs. These come from whole fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes and beans. They are typically low in caloric density, provide the energy you need, have plenty of protein, are very satisfying to eat and promote good health..

Thank you Dr. Dhand! I agree, so many people, different situations, availability of food, there is no “one size fits all” diet. In case my experience helps someone: Eating a plant centered diet low in processed foods works for me. I get to fill up on a lot of food and still keep weight low. Plants and healthy whole grains are high in carbs and I fill up on these as opposed to avoiding them. The processed/refined carbohydrates (ie: chips, baked goods) are what I avoid(mostly😊). Most of these foods come with large amounts of fat and sugar. Granted, this switch may be difficult for many people due to cultural and other pressures but it works for me and I don’t end up feeling hungry all of the time as long as I stick to that formula. I eat 1/2 a plate of starchy veggies/rice/ beans/ potato etc. and 1/2 a plate of steamed non-starchy veggies (plus more veg if still hungry). Plenty of fruit as well. Don’t need to count calories either! I was amazed at my lab results at the doctor visit just one month after switching to this way of eating. There are many ways to learn about this way of eating if interested. Look for videos by Plantiful Kiki, High Carb Hannah, Healthy Vegan Mamma , Healthy Emmie, also Simnet Nutrition all have helped me with this journey.
