I've honed alot of scoars out of cylinders with a spring loaded 3 stone flex hone. If you know what your doing you can correct alot of problems with a hone and finish hone with a slurry... what you call plateau honing. You talk the talk, let's see some action. Salute to the skilled do it your selfer that finds a way to do it right with what he has. I am..he is ..the machine shop. A True Craftsman.

You did that way better than most , and cleared up many things i just new as rhetoric like 320grit brush l have which does leave a nice pattern but l thought the shallow cross hatch may not last long ? Now of course being clearly explained its a dedicated break in process , and not one mention how many people don't know or how great your skills may be . To the point , brilliant dude .lol

I agree Its best to have the block plated. Using a three stone to correct a taper or egg of .002 is not something for a novice. For a simple correction less than .0015 -.002 I use a three stone hone attached to an old school crank hand drill it gives me complete control. I use two different grits first between 240/280 to correct the cylinder then a 500 grit to finish, after stone work a green scotch brite and HOT soapy water.

What Size Dingle Berry Hone are you using? I'm currently rebuilding my e39 M54 engine. Thanks for the information in advance.

Instead of running a drill in and out like a maniac, be loud at the same time and useless with facts, or showing it the wrong way - like in many other videos, I like how you explained facts with ease of all these options and reasons why to use them or not. 👍

I thought you could just throw the main bearing caps back on to troque specs and just hone the block that way?

Hi! for de 84mm Bore,... what flex-hone size did you pick? thanks

Where are you located I might be able to refer you to a couple of shops I send my work to that do it right and pay attention to the details.

Hey Jason, I guess you watched the HPF video off youtube? With all the work your doing on that engine wouldn't you want a quote from M&B machine shop featured in that video? Shipping the block can't be that bad to them and get them to do a proper job... Surely the work your doing on that engine of yours, its only right that you have the block torque plated in the machining process?

Yo, i really enjoy some of your videos because i own a 530 M54 so its familiar to me... We in europe can make hone like 1-2hrs of work for 80-100 dollars..? I always enjoy watching americans doing it all the hard way :)

BTW never trust only hand tools because they are cheap... proffesional hone machine can make surface diameter about 0.0003-0.001mm top to bottom, Ra -surface roughness about 0.025-0.1µm and price for work is never high so much that you cannot afford well done job for your lovely car :)

Toilet brushes wrapped in green Scotch brites work great for cleaning the grit out after honing

As always, outstanding presentation. I've learned so much from you. Thank you very much. Quick question: Will the hone brush or stone remove rust from a cylinder wall?
@50sKid7 жыл бұрын
Yes but it depends on how deep the rust goes. Both types of hones remove very little material so as long as it's just surface rust, yes it will.

Is it possible to reborn a cylinder wider with a lisle hone to take cylinder liners?
@pinnacleengineeringanautom74114 жыл бұрын
A rigid honing head is the correct way to hone .... Flexi hones ....do not allocate for taper and ovality and runs away from centricity
@marklowe74316 жыл бұрын
If your std piston bore clearance is 0.003 + wear and you remove another 0.002 your looking at a fair bore clearance which will probably end up with slap.
@JCcanU5 жыл бұрын
Ball hone or Flex Hone will only take off 2 tenth of a thousands 3 inch and .508.0 after 20 to 50 strokes up down the cylinder the reading will be 3.508.2 Its not a boring stone its a crosshatch stone or deglazing brush . It take 120 to 200 strokes to remove .002 th your only doing this to use new rings that did not seat . 10 to 20 strokes will not change the bore . but leave a fresh crosshatch .
@thetruth43914 жыл бұрын
Bore and Hone should only be done by computerized machines! the size has to be perfect for every cylinder so there's no gap when fitting your pistons! I'm sorry but, for a procedure that requires that level of perfection, doing it by hand is simply ludicrous! although it will work, you will not benefit from maximum performance and reliability!
