A 72-year-old man has worked in the same job for 54 years, having started as a busboy and dishwasher back in 1964. Real fam, do you think he has been content or complacent?

Not disputing that he is best fitted doing the job he enjoys. The main concern is He SHOULD NOT be making minimum wage after 50 years of dedicated commitment to someone else's success. And don't talk about him being content with the money he makes, because if that was the case he wouldn't be walking 90 minutes to get to work. Either he would have bought a car or moved house. Also if he was making enough money, he and his family could have eventually opened up their own restaurant, after all it is his passion. If the owner truly saw his value, they would offer him longevity pay and seniority. Because of him this business is saving thousands in such costs: employee turnover, theft, retraining and job know-how. Moreover, consider the economics of it. $1 usd has a lower purchasing power today than it did 30 and 50 years ago. He's getting the same pay, and having a lower standard of living because he can buy less things since prices always go up. Poor man probably could not even afford to put his child through university. This is a clear case of a hard working man being taken advantage of.

I'm with April Ryan on this one. Just because someone is comfortable at a situation, doesn't mean that he/she should be taken advantage of. And just because someone says they're happy truly mean that they're content. Some take being comfortable for happy. You will struggle somehow if you don't make a certain amount and No Adrienne and Loni, you don't have to be a millionaire to live a decent life. Many people aren't millionaires but they make enough money so they don't have to struggle. Yall ladies have it backwards.

What part of “he doesn’t want it” don’t some of you understand? Stop thinking about what makes you happy and think about what makes him happy. If he’s okay, why do you care?! Not everyone’s happy with the same thing. Even if he is complacent, how does that have ANY affect on you?! This man made it to 72 years old and is able bodied. He’s three times my age. I think he knows himself and what he wants better than anyone else. He’s not the problem. His employer isn’t the problem. Wanting more or less for yourself isn’t the problem. People telling someone what should make them happy because it makes you happy is the problem. People can only use you if they are withholding something you want. If they aren’t giving him something he wants then how are they using him?! If the man is happy let him be. I promise you this man knew and still knows how to manage his finances along with his wife and could stop working today if he wanted to. But he’s happy being there, it’s crazy because lot of people do this. They could retire easily but choose not to and do jobs like this not for the money but for the enjoyment. Only commenting on two points...one of the hosts remarked that his employer should have offered him advancement, etc.(paraphrased). How do we know that they (employer) didn't. Some people like the dependability of knowing what is expected of them. That is their comfort range. Many years ago, while in college I worked in a restaurant and this was the case with an older worker. She loved her job and didn't want to upset her life. She came and went each day knowing that she did the job and didn't have to worry about tomorrow. She rejected advancement because that messed with her contentment. (her comfort zone) For every one person that hasn't been offered advancement, there are hundreds, thousands, everyday that are afforded that opportunity in small and large companies. The problem I have with this show is that there should be more diverse opinions (if they're going to tackle social and political issues) in the mix. Its too much "group think" and VERY one-sided. This is the reason that I have stopped "regular" viewing (youtube) and only catch an occasional clip.

I think part of the issue with people today, and my generation in specific is that we ourselves are struggling to be home owners and car owners and make something ourselves in order to sustain ourselves and our families. My personal experience, I want to continue to strive for more not because i want to be rich, but because right now, i can't own a home and i'm barely making my car payments, and i know that with what i make right now, in this economy, there is no way that i will be able to raise a family. So when we see situations like this, we put ourselves in his shoes and feel like there is no way that he could be content with that. But good for him for being able to own a home and raise his family and have a job he enjoys. Not everyone has the same journey.

No ones saying he should leave if he is happy but they are absolutely taking advantage of his loyalty. Give that man a raise! 90 minutes to get to work for $2 over minimum wage? That is ridiculous.

I definitely agree with Loni and Adrienne. So many people get that job they were dying for but five years or so down the line they want something else because they aren’t content with what they are doing. Say if he did take that other job, would it be worth it if he hated what he was doing just for a better paycheck. After 54 years his job should do something for him.

I don't understand why Loni and Adrienne would have these views! Everyone deserves more as life progresses! Minimum wage? Really? The other thing is he comes from a generation where some people internalised their own oppression, believing they "dont deserve or should be grateful" I believe he doesn't know he has a choice so is taking JUST what he's given! This is very sad and if he was my father, well it could'nt be!!!

I feel like if he's happy working there, then why not. I'm sure if he wanted to find another job, he would've gotten it. They state that the company offered him different positions and he declined it. He's happy where he is right now. Why should he have to keep moving up? If hes happy, leave him.

I honestly think it goes back to knowing and understanding your worth.. yes i do agree you should do what makes you happy however this individual has shown dedication work ethic and providing excellent customer service throughout the years... I feel that even if he didn’t want to move up with the company they should compensate him for his hard work. I know someone who did the same thing for a retail company and when they went under she was left with a measly 1 week severance check... I feel that at the end of the day certain jobs will only view you as a number and not a hard working individual and he shouldn’t be taken advantage of!

Bless his heart!!!! I'm glad he loves what he does; However....... I feel he should've spoke up, and said "Im commited and loyal to the company, I love my position and I'd like to continue with that position. However, my pay needs to be increased significantly because I'm valuable, I've proved myself and I deserve it! Same position and more $$$ will suffice and i would say it jst like that!!!-What pisses me off is, he worked there 54 years the the company is ok w/ letting him continue to be paid 2 dollars an hour???!!!!🙅No mam and No Sir!!!!! They couldve surprised him with a permant raise on g.p. alone! He deserves wayyyyyyyyy more than 2 dollars. His loyalty and commitment is unmatched!!! Respect!

Its not up to the company to baby you into applying for more senior positions ... If he wanted a higher position he could have applied and because of his loyalty we know he would have got the job. If this man is happy, that should be the end of it. It is well known that the majority of people change their careers atleast 4 times in their life. If this man is happy with his one position then that is a very lucky place to be

Honestly if the man is happy and can support himself and family I see np with him staying at a minimum wage job bc that's what matters at the end of the day is happiness and the problem is people who stay at jobs that make them miserable just bc it's easier then taking a risk at doing something that makes them happy but I do agree the company definitely should do something to honor him for his hardwork

You can't want something for someone more than they want it for themself. If you want it you will at least aim for it. If not stay happy where you are. Also you can't teach motivation, it's born of desire. If you don't want it No body is gonna dream it for you. Contentment v ambition

I think this is sad. A dish washing job can only be so hard and he must have perfected that craft a long time ago. I do not admire people who do not want more for themselves and who do not want to grow and be challenged in every aspect of their lives. If you are in your relationship and you are pretty much where you started 5 years ago, wouldn't you think something is wrong? I think it's the same when it comes to careers. Yes, it's his life but I find this to be pathetic. You don't have to be a slave to money or super rich but having ambition and believing in oneself enough to aspire for better is inspirational to me.

I love how the guest on the show was trying to delve into a much deeper and political issue in this story and literally ALL of them cut her off. She was making a very good point. A VERY intelligent woman indeed. They (the company) were taking advantage of this mans generosity, and naivety. $2 more than minimum wage does not warrant a nice or easy life in the US no matter where. And a 3 hour commute is too much to be paid so little. On the extra $2 he makes, he's gotta think about money to commute. But this gentleman probably doesn't know anything else so of course he isn't going to complain. And if you don't know you're being abused, or are so used to it (think about it, he starting working just before the civil rights era) then are you really aware there's better treatment out there or that you deserve more?

Typical of a politician. Always trying to convince us that they know what is best for us and we don’t know anything. If he is happy with his conditions and what he has who are we to judge? Also, something NO ONE mentions here is that if the man wanted more money he could ask for more! Being there 50+ years has certainly afforded him the ability to ask for a raise if he wanted it.

People should mind their business, some people just want to go to work, get paid and live. If he is happy at his job who are we to judge. We do not know his relationship with the owners of the place. Mind your business. I am more surprised that the company has been around for 54 years. that is an achievement considering the restaurant business.
