Who else loves bunnies so much??? Also, I'm aware European wild rabbits can breed with domestic bunnies, but here in the United States, Cottontails are a different species and CANNOT breed with domestic rabbits. I just want to clarify that since it wasn't mentioned in the video specifically :)

I teach at a city school where a Havana rabbit was abandoned. He was dropped off in winter, and survived well. In the spring he left himself into the enclosed courtyard, where he tunneled and survived another winter. This summer, the Principal wanted him gone due to his devouring all the pretty flowers. I tried to place him, but no luck, and the thought of caging him was appalling. So...I decided that the best thing was for me to free range him in our 1acre back yard. He shelters under the deck, and grazes in clover. He’s loving his freedom under our watchful eye....and now someone has abandoned another rabbit at our school. The live trap is set, and my Havana will soon have a free range friend...it can work!

The Australian rabbit problem is an entirely different issue. It's an example of how an invasive species can go out of control because the foreign ecosystem isn't designed to keep it in balance. Australia also has a severe feral cat problem which has destroyed their ecology so badly that some species may go extinct. Their cat problem is so severe that, in some areas, you can buy a hunting license to let you shoot feral cats. The U.S. has plenty of examples of foreign invaders that are the same way. Burmese pythons are destroying the Florida wetlands. Pleco catfish are considered one of the most destructive invaders in U.S. rivers. Both of these creatures were somebody's pets that either accidentally escaped or were purposely dumped in the wild, and they started breeding like crazy and now nobody can get rid of them.

I found a domestic rabbit in the woods last winter. She's black and white (mini) with probably some lionhead as the fur's really long around her neck. She's mostly white with black spots and tiny little black ears that are the cutest. I just finished a bigger habitat for her and she bites my bum when I sit in it with her. She loves being kissed on her back but hates being picked up. I named her Spooky because of the black around her eyes, looks like she's in a halloween costume

Great video, very informative! But I'd like to correct you on a small point. As domestic rabbits are descended from wild European rabbits, they're essentially the same species and can, in fact, breed with each other and produce fertile offspring, just as with wolves and dogs. However, wild American rabbits are a different species and can't breed with domestic rabbits. Just wanted to clarify that, because I know of a few instances here in England where wild rabbits managed to break into a hutch and impregnate the does.

Yes, domestic rabbits are exactly the same species as European wild rabbits. They are able to interbreed and share all of the same diseases. Their dietary needs are exactly the same. This is very different to the domestic dog vs wolf as the longer length of domestication of the dog has allowed a lot more changes to occur in their dentition and digestion, not just physical appearance.

Hi! Just so you know I find it extremely interesting how a wild rabbit cannot breed with a domestic. One week before our female rabbit was going to the clinic to get spayed, a wild rabbit (brush rabbit, possibly) got in with my female. I tried to separate them but it was too late. Then we searched and realized there is no way she was pregnant but our vet told us it was totally possible (except it was kind of rare). I disagreed but he said don't spay her and see that I'm right. So we did as he told and 31 days later 3 kits were born (my vet was surprised the embryos didn't die), the runt having the exact pattern as his father (and he has an agouti pattern). So I guess they are hybrids? I don't know but my vet says most wild rabbits can make a female pregnant despite many people disagreeing (like I said it is a slim chance). I honestly don't know but the bunnies are healthy. And after research, domestic rabbit originates from European wild rabbits, which is very unlike wolves and dogs who came from one line of a large wolf-like dog and separated to become wolves and dogs. And there are little domestic rabbits that came from American rabbits. Still, don't understand it but my vet says it is possible for European domestic rabbits to breed with the American rabbits. Probably rare, but it could happen. It's all really weird.

"Like wolves and dogs, domestic rabbits and wild rabbits live totally distinct lives and are two completely different species." Except wolves and dogs are the same species. Likewise, domestic rabbits and wild European rabbits are the same species. Domestic rabbits are also capable of living on their own in the wild. In terms of temperament, we didn't fiddle with them all that much. Besides Australia, there's Long Beach City College in California, Whidbey Island in Washington, and Canmore and Banff in Alberta, among many others. The lifespan difference isn't really a difference in the animals as it is lifestyle. Living in the wild is stressful and few animals of a rabbit's size last much longer than the two years you mentioned. Lifespan in captivity is much more comparable to a pet rabbit's lifespan. Also pretty sure wild rabbits would adapt to a human's schedule if tamed. They're pretty flexible. I've seen rabbits hopping about the yard at most times of the day. I'm also pretty sure you give a domestic rabbit a chance and she'll surprise you with her burrowing skills. Thing is, a full warren isn't built in a day, they develop over generations. Domestic rabbits are only friendly with humans if they're socialized early. Otherwise they act exactly like wild rabbits. Personal experience. Their diets aren't really different, either. Timothy hay *is* grass. The fresh salad greens are nice luxury items for our furry friends, but they'd do just fine on the same mix of native grass, clover, bark, and Mr. McGregor's garden that wild rabbits do. In short, domestic rabbits aren't as different from wild rabbits as you make out. It's mostly lifestyle, and domestic rabbits are a lot tougher than most people give them credit for.

@@assassin9164 Yeah no. I don't know about Bulgaria or Russia, but here in australia rabbits are a invasive species, a pest if you may. So removing them is a top priority here, and this notion of wildlife services just letting animals die is very wrong, not always a injured animal will survive, hell the animal may just give up itself and die, its sad but happens. And if they also care about animals that can be hunted isnt that a good thing? Would you rather have no one to control what and what cant be hunted and have hunters go all trigger happy?

Sadly, I've gotten both my domestic rabbits off the streets, but a few years apart. I put up signs and notices, but in the end I ended up keeping them. Luckily, a co-worker of mine was a bunny mom and helped me learn to care for Bubbi, my first rabbit.

Rabbits are pray animals. If you want something you can hug 24/7 buy a stuffed toy. If you bought it from a breeder and know if the parents were nice then just give it space and it will ease up. It takes time, up to 2 years sometimes. If you rescued it, well, the rabbit could be from a backyard breeder or abused, in that case it will have a really hard time accepting you.

Where do you live? RHD and Myxomatosis are not widespred in USA. And most common vector of RHD and Myxomatosis are mosquitoes in Europe. European Rabbit is not that common nowadays, it is Near Threatened in the wild.RHD and Myxomatosis are spread by unvaccinated meat rabbits and mosquitoes feeding on them, not that rare wild.

There was this really cute wild rabbit living in my backyard which is really weird since I live next to the city and you’d have to drive hours to get to a forest. It was so cute, I’d give it strawberries (I wasn’t sure if rabbits could eat strawberries). It sadly died, im pretty sure it was eaten by a bigger animals but the neighborhood wasn’t safe so it couldn’t have survived due to the amount of car accidents. I was intrigued with it that whenever I’d go to work I’d sing to it on my way to my mum’s car while it stared at me. So adorable.

I always wondered where the hell do domestic rabbits come from, and why do they come in millions of colors and patterns when compared to wild rabbits. Like I know they come from European wild rabbits, but how did they evolved to look so different and cuter? I'm also assuming that people back in the day would see them as food, not pets.

There is a feral domestic bunny in my neighborhood! I’ve tried to catch it using a ‘Have a Heart Trap’ but no luck it looks like a Flemish Giant mix, and it’s gotta be at least 14lb! My guess is that he/she got to big and the owners thought it’d be fine in the wild. He’s still alive after 2 years, but he’s in touch condition.
