Heres something i noticed. Why is there no AA focused weapon systems? The Hoth Ion canon was 1 thing. It was to destroy capital ships. And the use of man portable autocannons could be used as point defense and anti-fighter. But looking through the series, iv yet to notice a simple… lets say… base Anti-Aircraft system. In reality, the US has the Avenger AA humvee, the M6 Linebacker, the H-SHORAAD (SHOrt Range Anti Air Defense). Or even emplacements. Like the Russian Zu-23-2 for helis or the US MIM-23 HAWK stationary medium range AA missile platform for planes. Any thought or ideas on anti-aircraft/spacecraft weapons? Id imagine that theyd be more prevalent for planet defense, but iv yet to see much.

The other reason you don't just use orbital bombardment, is that you glass the planet, that's a potentially valuable, inhabitable planet and all its resources gone. Even in 40K, the Imperium doesn't just call down Exterminatus at the drop of a hat, despite the memes, because planets are valuable, certainly far more valuable than a glassed, irradiated dead rock.

Another consideration is that, while it's thin, travelling through a hundred miles of atmosphere can still bleed off a lot of velocity from kinetic rounds and diffuse energy from laser and plasma weapons. But the point about not damaging a planet with a livable environment is a valid point.

People tend to overrate orbital bombardment devastation. Nowadays, with our tech, we have very precise weapons that we can use from orbit if we decide to ignore the No-weapons-in-space international rules. Imagine the precision of sci-fi space to ground weaponry. A single capital ship can practically provide fire support over all of Europe to the same effect as hundreds of airborne drones (like the Bayraktar). You don't need to glass the planet to destroy all enemy formations that are garrisoned somewhere or are moving from one place to another. Even if you do bombard the planet extensively, unless there are resources that are valuable intact (for example, a special crystal from that planet that if you shatter to pieces and then glue it together, nobody is going to buy it), most other resources aren't going to just disappear. Lets say the planet has a lot of ore. What difference does it make if you are going to collect it in large pieces or you are going to collect it in the form of sand. In the end you have the same amount of ore. What about fuel for your ships ? OK, you destroyed the planetary extraction sites...So what ? Just send your own companies to construct new ones. That fuel isn't going to magically stop existing beneath the surface just because you bombed enemy cities or bunkers. And lastly, Earth has been through so much devastation already. I don't know about areas that have problems growing vegetation, because they were turned into swiss cheese during WW1 and WW2. There is vegetation growing even around Chernobyl. So not bombarding the planet, because of enviromental reasons (I'm not talking about nukes, only kinetic or plasma bombardment) is the most stupid excuse ever. Writers just don't know how to justify their army vs army epic battle scenes and they come up with "why orbital bombardment doesn't work" excuses. In reality if your enemy controls your space, the moment you go out from your shield generator or deep underground facilities, your army is dead without even seeing a single enemy soldier on the ground. Epic army vs army battles can happen only when the attacker breaches the shield area or the underground base. Vanilla field battles can't exist in Space Warfare tech.

You forgot the Rebel missle artillary vehicles from Empire At War. Those things were terrifying. Any time I saw their scout drones zipping across the battlefield I would panic, pull my main forces back, and send out scout troopers on speeder bikes or tie mauler tanks on a desperate search and destroy suicide mission before my entire army got obliterated.

My fan theory regarding rotary (and other repeating types) blaster weapons is that not only doe it help with heat dispersion but also that residual plasma builds up in the barrel (as well as other parts) messing with the electromagnetic fields focusing subsequent shots. So rotary action (as well as other clearing mechanism) lead to a more consistent performance.

The Death Star wasn't a fire support system. And in the same vein, one of the reasons you might be hesitant to use it, or even orbital bombardment, would be if you wanted to capture your target intact. Maybe the planet in question is friendly, but occupied by hostile forces. If you want to liberate the planet, destroying it or making it uninhabitable is out of the question.

Orbital bombardment came be varied though from a point directed target, target area saturation so total planetary glassing. There's tiers to this 😂. It's like requesting a naval bombardment. You could go from cruiser, to battleship, to saturation strike of vls missles

I would say supposedly because a heavy laser turret is likely capable of going through a light to medium armored vehicle like butter. Kinda like the 50cal still used today and still quick effective at taking out/ disabling light and medium armored vehicles. But yea… we see rocket launchers used in the Clone Wars more than we did with the Rebels v Empire deal. I guess because the rebels always had CAS nearby?

Here’s an idea for a future video… We all know that the Empire expanded left, right, and center. Resources and manpower went into the military industrial complex. And any planet that did not want to be part of the Empire were forced into it. Palpatine did not tolerate independent systems in his galaxy. But what’s the Republic’s excuse? Why is it that the Republic government, old and new, is so against planets and systems wanting to exist outside the Republic’s influence? Examples include the CIS in the prequels and Clone Wars shows, and Navarro in season 3 of The Mandalorian.

Endor can't have that high a gravity or noone would be able to move around as we see both the Rebels and Imperials do. Plus a high gravity world wouldn't have such tall trees, they simply wouldn't be able to grow that high fighting the moon's gravity.

I call bs on the high gravity on Endor. Regular people like the rebels in eposiode 6 couldn't have walked around there the way they did if the gravity was notably higher than usual (whatever usual means in a galaxy far away where earth doesn't exist).

Hi Allen, this is off subject. I noticed in season 3 of the Mandalorian that Din Djarin's chain code is different then Bo Katan's and Boba Fetts. It appears to be red lettered basic. Some folks on another site are having trouble making out what it says because of the angle. Thought maybe you could help me out. Could be a wild goose chase. Then again it might pertain to my theory that Din is more then a bounty hunter. Thanks for your time.

The orbital bombardment portion of this otherwise fantastic segment omits some massive factors. A ship shooting from space can utilize space to great effect because solid state energy weapons need to contend with atmosphere going both ways. Weather even has an effect on them.

Always wondered why there seems to be no emplaced or vehicle mounted version of the Z-6. Give it a gun shield to protect the operator and you have a good bunker/defensive emplacement or light vehicle weapon. I at one point thought about designing a Star Wars equivalent to a Humvee or other such vehicle,it would have had a Z-6 with gunshield/armor plate operated by a gunner on top. Kinda got stuck on what propulsion method to use, most likely repuslers would fit and allow quick transport of small amounts of cargo or a few troops apiece.

Another reason Orbital Bombardment isn't always used (apart from plot), is the same reason we don't just flatten our enemies with massive amounts of artillery and aircraft: while you can theoretically win a war by killing every last one of your enemy, in practical terms that's basically impossible. Instead you tried to destroy their ability to fight and force them to the negotiation table. Ultimately fighting a war is about getting your infantry from point A to point B with their rifle/sword/pointy stick/heavy rock, every other system or weapon is just in support of that. Infantry Fighting Vehicles give infantry more mobility and sometimes a little more firepower. Armoured Fighting Vehicles like Tanks or Assault Guns give heavy direct fire, to destroy fixed emplacements or enemy armour. Artillery give indirect fire. Ground Attack Aircraft give fire that can be either direct or indirect. While these systems (and others, especially the entire logistics train) may or may not always provide direct support to infantry movement, ultimately their actions are used clear the way allowing your infantry to move across the battlefield now matter how big that may be. Strategic weapons like Nukes (or Starship Cannons/Death Stars) are of limited use, not only because they can't be used near your own troops, for fear of friendly fire, but also because they can only be used to destroy not capture a target. Destroying entire territories not only makes it more difficult to move your troopers through, but also removes anything of value from that territory. Destroying entire planets is just insane, the shear loss of valuable resources alone in both material terms as well as people: you might win the war, but destroy the long term possibility of expansion of your own empire in the process, if not actually cause your empire to collapse.

I mean also you wouldnt want to always use orbital bombardment for the simple reason of accuracy. It doesnt matter if your gun only deviates a centimeter per 100 meters, firing from orbit isnt going to be as accurate as you might think. Scorching a planet you want to take over is a bad idea cause youre gonna be the one to rebuild it. And frankly the cost in time or resources of pulling an entire capital ship out of its patrol area or schedule is probably not worth it in most cases and since the Empire didnt care about saving the lives of foot soldiers, well... Also itd be boring if they did that to solve every problem in the show.

Realistically theres one, singular situation where a ground team would call in the doom lazer. And thats if they were doing recon on a potential hidden rebel command base like Yavin IV or Hoth. And the only reason they'd be the ones calling in the strike is cause this recon mission that they confirmed the leadership for the rebellion on, now became a suicide mission where the imperial ground team were gonna die either way. So call in the Death Star on their position to obliterate the base and planet. To crush the Rebellion once and for all. Otherwise, yeah, no way in hell anyone on the ground would willingly call the Deathstar for fire support on the same planet as them. Maybe on the moon of the planet you're own as a show of force"😂
