We often write off the B-1 Battle Droid as useless clankers, that are tossed at the Grand Army of the Republic as cannon fodder. They're cheap to make and even easier to destroy, and they seem to be me made in infinite quantities. But as many fans have started to notice, these droids actually do have the ability to feel, they have emotions and even fear death. This self-awareness gives us a glimpse at the suffering these droids went through during the Clone Wars.

THEIR NEEDS TO BE A STORY ABOUT REINCARNATION ASS A STAR WARS DROID

Speaking of droids: they show up as regular enemies in Jedi Survivor. With all their endearing quirkiness intact. And I cannot help but like them. Throughout the games dialog you can hear one being reactivated and immediately asking if they've won the war, you hear one being in awe of the location they're stationed at, having them argue about who is more advanced and even daydreaming about getting promoted. They might be clankers and a lot of their dialog is played for laughs, but they have a lot of personality. Way more than they were probably ever supposed to have. It almost makes me feel bad for cutting them down to bits, but then I take a wrist rocket to the face and suddenly I find myself out of empathy.

I tend to believe there came a certain point where droids, especially old battledroids, had more heart than many imperial stormtroopers, or, fallen humans. After being conditioned to follow through with complete loyalty to the Emperor, despite even having to genocide their own families and planets in the end of it, reinforces how humans have mental barriers to assess before deciding to defect away. Their self worth has been erased for belonging to one purpose. Mentioning birth names instead of their issued TK numbers deviates towards reinforcing the encouragement of individuality, a wickedness to be stamped out. Exemplary actions of the hardcore loyalists almost never defect, as they would rather die by any means, even suicide, especially when it is religiously tied to some protocol of whatever their Emperor commands. Continuity without their Emperor is their definition of both sin and treason. Side note: It is because of this aspect of how far someone can surrender personal will for blind loyalty to evil is what makes Jedi mind tricks stand out more as a known ability. Meanwhile, subjugated droids can easily become reprogrammed and answer to their new masters. Sure, they’ll also follow orders to the letter, but only within the limits of programming.

@@midniteraptor1474 Alright, was confused abd thought maybe there was another moment like that. It is funny though. C-3PO getting a bit kill driven, and the B1 walking a lot slower and saying he must need repairs. Also really love Kit Fisto’s smile as he pushes C-3PO over. My guess is he and the other Jedi saw the odd situation and figured best not to destroy these 2 droids. Kit pushes C-3PO down and the Jedi chick skillfully deflects a shot blasting the B1 head clean of C-3PO’s body.

Man, the clones and droids were kindred spirits in a way, forced into existence with the goal of fighting and slaughtering eachother on mass all for the sake of truely evil chess masters who discarded them the instant they got what they wanted. A true tragedy that neither side asked for, and now the few of each that remain are desperately trying to find their own paths in a galaxy that hates them. The Clone Wars were a tragedy of truly monstrous proportions and my heart goes out to all the poor beings of all races who were caught in its clutches, but none more so than these two groups of children forced to fight the war that they had no stake in.

Robots have always been my very favorite type of character as a kid. Their existence is a marvel by default. The friendships they form show a faint spark of legitimate sentience. My dad clearly loved this concept too as he read I.Robot books to me as a kid. He even straight up asked “Wouldn’t it be neat to create a soul?” I’d love to go back and show him the clips of Legion and other Geth from Mass Effect series asking the war starting question “Does this unit have a soul?”

Never forget the suffering of poor R0GR. Who witnessed his master growing up during a war only to join Luke Skywalker in the first Jedi training since the original clone wars. Unfortunately the son of Solo would leave the school a ruin of death and the boy's loyal B-1 was forced to remember him as strangely irreverent collection of bricks as he trudged through the years of janitorial slavery for the new resistance.

My favorite droid ever so far is the B-1 warehouse manager who shouted "You should have LEFT HIM ALONE!" at the heavily armed mandalorians, one of whom wouldn't have thought twice about firing a parting shot on the way out. The droid dude legit just wanted him and his bretheren to be left alone, allowed to continue performing a function and being able to exist. I imagine for many of those droids, it's a huge improvement. They are still basically slaves, but now they get regular oil baths, maintenance, and aren't sent in slow marches into artillery fire and mace windu. Now if they got paid, and were able to have free time, life would be good.

Why did they have to give the droids sentience? Why did they have to program them to feel fear and arrogance? You could’ve made a droid however you want, you could program them to be resilient cold calculating killing machines. Hell you don’t even have to make them *look* vaguely humanoid. Yet they still made them look and act like humans.

@@stevenschnepp576 Wow, good job at being completely wrong. We saw planets and their civilizations being ravaged by the Clone Wars, but the Battle-Droids and the Clone-Troopers are also huge victims of the war. Bad Batch and the Clone Wars series proves easily that the Clones are intelligent living beings with agency and rightful emotions, and Solar Sands' video proves that the Droids also have full personalities with emotions and goals. @ICantThinkOfAFunnyHandle was right, both of them were basically children. The Clones and Droids tragically have a lot more in common than either side wants to admit. Both are mass-produced soldiers who are wrongfully treated as expendable pawns, both were created to fight in a war that none of them asked for, and both were cruelly thrown away despite everything they went through (B1 Droids shut down and destroyed, Clones replaced with conscripts and faded away). And both are intelligent beings with valid feelings, hopes and ambitions who honestly deserved far better.

To be fair, a nuke would totally kill robots too. It's basically a giant fire bomb and would melt them to death. The Defoliator was, somehow, even scarier since it disintegrates organic flora and fauna and just leaves empty ruins. Addendum: Yeah, the cantina guy (who doesn't own it, actually) is a jerk but it was, apparently, due to a recent influx of Imperial droids sniffing around the bar that he didn't want droids in there. I'm not saying he loved droids (since there's no Legends data on that that I know of) but there were legit reasons that most people just attribute to droid phobia because who's going to go look up extra lore when analyzing a short bit of a movie from the 1970s?

Honestly when I think about it I never thought about the droid side of the war I always thought they were just machines with no brain of their own but seeing it like this is really sad

My D6 RPG character, a force-sensitive droid tech, has built a pair of B1/B2 bodyguard droids. Very useful critters! They have minimal fighting ability, but they come in useful in many respects, from decoying to hauling to laying down cover fire or throwing "Glitter Bombs" (smoke grenades, but with pink-and-purple party glitter). My group has capable fighters, and they can now go to town on the bad guys while my character is protected by Opie and Dopie :)

I know it's the easy and convenient way to blame Palpatine for everything in the Clone Wars, but that's a huge disregard for Plagueis's involvement in the Spearatist crisis and his manipulation decades before he meets our favorite Sith.

this was very moving and thoughtful and a good reminder of how we should treat people. Coming from a ubiquitous plot tool and Shakespearian-esque stock character without any agency.

One of my absolute favorites tidbits from Star Wars is that fully sentient AI exists everywhere and is seen not as a revolutionary accomplishment of technology but as an mildly annoying and unwanted side afect of whatever widely available base program they base all their droids in the Galaxy on. I believe his highlights just how little the Galaxy at large knows their own technology. They can fix it, copy it, and maybe tweak it. But not recreate or explain it.

Can consider droids spiritual they can actually escape body from ☠️. How come no scientist tried to see if they uploaded an organics mind. To escape death. Jedi can read your mind so why Anakin think about Downloading people's consciousness to stop those people from truly dying. And Ironic that the Zarkacc has memories of past victims but he'd have to go into the sand

If only there was a crossover into the DOOM Eternal universe, there would be a UAC official named Dr. Samuel Hayden. He may have expanded the scientific advancement from whatever previous finished products of Sith experimentation as the likes of General Grievous.
