The other kid is allowed to not want to talk to him, you cannot control how others act. However, her son is also allowed to feel upset about it, we are humans, we feel emotions. However, even though we cannot control how others act, we can control how we ourselves act, because the other kid is being mean to you, you shouldn't be mean to him, nor let him walk over you. Wonderwoman said it best "you don't treat people according to who they are, you treat them according to who you are" That's what she should have told her kid. That's how the kid will actually stop caring, not by being bashed for it.

As someone who grew up with parents who made it abundantly clear that me having emotions was the biggest inconvenience to them, I really hope that kid has other influences in his life that will keep him from trying to unrealistically bottle up his emotions. It’s not healthy, and trying to undo the damage long into adulthood is exhausting. Why do people have babies just to get annoyed when that baby grows up to become an actual person. Boggles my brain.

Honestly, respect for Cam and the SSN thing. When I was still in retail, I was written up for not selling enough credit cards - when our customer base was largely people who already had enough debt and money stress on their plate. Credit card quotas are so predatory on both the workers and customers.

agreed, company cc’s are super predatory - but the customer filing out the application is technically the one responsible for the contract/making sure all information on the application is accurate. I've worked for two major retailers that had CC quotas and it sucked so much. One was a well known hardware store (not saying which one) and I found out one of my supervisors was doing that to help make quotas. To make it worse, they were doing under other associate's names so it didn't look like they themselves got a bunch. They worked at that store for 7 years, never got caught. One of the other supervisors told me about it after they had left the store.

i think the issue with raising kids to only care and be responsible for themselves is it can push them towards heightened individualistic tendencies and not learning the value of compromise and expanding their worldview… one of the defining characteristics of us as humans is that we care for one another, and once that core trait is lost our future becomes much more grim.
@MistakenAcorn8 ай бұрын
Again it depends on each person's experience, but yea most of the time.becoming independent really young puts more emphasis on helping yourself rather than others. But it can help put things into perspective and how "hard" it is to care for yourself, you "learn" how "hard" it's been for your parents. I grew up with 7 siblings, we all need to learn to be independent at sometime and the later you leave it the harder it gets...

That parent is effectively shaming their apparently lonely and justifiably emotional child for being shunned by another child. That other child could also very well have learned that behavior by being shunned by other kids, siblings, or abusive parents/guardians, or at best is the only other child who will hang around them at school. Besides this particular situation, the correct reaction, as a parent, to a kid being upset, confused, and/or depressed about not having friends, not being able to maintain friendships, or being shunned by anybody is to *be that kid's friend* for a minute if you don't have the time or tools to give them a new tool they can use to deal with those situations better, cope with their emotions in a healthy way, communicate their emotions and needs better, or find/make new friends and explore/build better friendships. Kids barely have control over anything, they can barely do anything let alone anything by themselves. And everything they do and don't do comes with a mountain of emotions and exhaustion. But a parent and any adult can do so much more. The literal least you can do for a kid is to allow them to feel their own emotions. Not doing the bare minimum for a struggling kid is pathetic, it doesn't make you a parent or counselor or mentor. Going out of your way to cause trauma to a kid or to brainwash other adults into doing/saying things that cause lon-term trauma to kids makes you inhuman garbage, a complete waste of skin and air. That lady gossiping about her own kid's struggles and being proud of shaming them for it is trash.

While it's true that other people will inevitably treat you in a way you don't like and can't control, it's also true that it's okay to be hurt by that. Chiming in on the lady at the hairdresser: She seemed aggro, for sure. I definitely sympathize with the kid. If it were me talking to that kid, my response would sound like some age-appropriate version of, "Man, it's very frustrating and it hurts when people ignore us, especially when we don't know why. It's okay to feel however you feel about that, even if it feels complicated. But the important thing is that we all get to set our own boundaries, and for whatever reason, this person is setting a boundary with you. It might not feel fair at first, but respecting that boundary is the right thing to do. If you needed to set that boundary for any reason, I would think you'd want people to respect that boundary for you, right?" Of course it would depend on the kid and their age and the tone of the situation and a *million* other factors - but in no way would I think it's okay to tell a kid they "can't" feel something. Everyone is entitled to their feelings. It's what we do with those feelings that matter. If the kid was angry about being ignored, there is a lesson to be learned there, but learning to suppress their emotions damn sure isn't the right one.
