Hey there! Just an update. Since making a reaction to the live version of this (which you can watch here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2bapXh9pdSCn6s ), I can say, I get it now. :) I've come a long way since this video, and I actually like this song now. It's not top 10 material to me, but I see when so many of you love it. If you think some kind of follow-up reaction would be worth it, let me know. Have a good one. :)

The entire Iowa album is fueled by rage, hate, drugs and alcohol. You can feel Corey's emotions in the songs. As somebody who was full of rage in my late teens/early twenties this album along with their self titled helped me get through life knowing other people felt this way and it became an outlet to channel my anger instead of a random person or object. Their first two albums will always hold a place in my heart.

@@MusicCatsandCoffee Iowa is when I discovered Slipknot for myself and will always be my favorite, but I also love songs like Unsainted, Killpop, Snuff, etc. They have more misses (for me) on recent albums than they did on their first two, but there are still some absolute hits. Mostly it comes down to Corey's complete mastery of the clean/scream dynamic.

Disasterpiece is one of their heaviest songs, it`s about the time Corey suffered from Bullying and his hate towards it. The IOWA album itself is slipknot`s heaviest, for a person that doesn`t like their ``heavy side`` too much i would recommend to stay away from it for now hahaha. If you want a very calm nice song from them, try Circle.

This song was never fully about bullying. It is about a mental health crisis going on in the world where if someone sees or a child is told that they don’t have a soul and that every bond they thought they had with someone or special moment was just neurons firing off in their brain. That search for answers drives them insane and problems develop. It’s not about a belief in god but the spread of the truth that nothing matters and if something does happen it’s only a natural reaction that your body does to survive. You are just a clump of cells and nothing else. That’s the meaning of disasterpiece, the human body is the disasterpiece.

Iowa is their most brutal album, for many reasons. First of all, Corey used to SH (I'm not even joking) and used those brutal screams for making the Album, most of those screams are also very 'real' with no technique, meaning they are very harmful to his vocal chords, he'd totally ruin his voice after every performance. Second of all, this was recorded when the band was at their darkest time, they had been through a lot, especially Clown (Shawn Crahan), there's a lot to it on the Wiki page, too much to write. I guess these songs are reflective of what the band went through and they wanted some way to express that, and therefore the Iowa album debuted in 2001 with its raw, and brutal aggression. The more you know. That aside, I have some slightly less off-putting suggestions for the next Slipknot reactions you may like: - Gematria (The Killing Name) (AHIG) -- Mick Thomson's Rhythm is brutal in this one. His most technical and impressive work. - The Nameless (Vol. 3 The Subliminal Verses) -- The subject matter is weird (just a heads up) but the way it's composed is interesting. Like the vids btw

I agree with "John Hesters" comments. This was an Album influenced by some negative things at its time of production and it shows. It also distance them from all the nu-metal and metal from that time. Definitely their heaviest album to date, in my opinion. There was also a DVD that came out after this album called "Disasterpieces" that is worth a watch. Its one of the most fun live concert videos i have seen. I respect that you tapped before the second listen, its not for everyone. Love your honesty in your reviews. Keep them coming!

Disasterpiece is one of my favorites off Iowa. I recall when it first came out I ended up listening to the whole album for free at my local record store. It instantly resonated with me. Of course, I was an angst ridden 17 yr old at the time and my first gf had just dumped me. At one point I shouted out loud "F*** yeah! Someone finally understands me!" The manager then told me to quiet down. Good times, good times. Lol

Definitely understand this take and your thoughts are valid on it. Early Slipknot as I mentioned were....inbridled rage and anger at the world and their situation. Most members having quite difficult lives, struggling with addictions, and abuse in different forms. Most slipknot fans will probably tell you they prefer this sound, (I admit I am among them) because ultimately, early Slipknot consisted of....."vent" songs, and it spoke to many going through tough times themselves, whilst the current Slipknot is definitely more matured...as they have learned how to properly manage how they feel, conveying friendly....ish accessibility to people newer to metal or songs dealing with dark issues. (Edit: I also understand being overwhelmed by the subject matter and the language choices, because it is ALOT if you're not quite used to it)

Thanks for the info. I'm getting quite a Slipknot education in the comment section. I appreciate it! Music means a lot to people, and I had a feeling this song in particular would go in that category, so while it's not my taste, I wanted to remain unbiased and see the value in it. Hopefully I did that. Vent songs (perfect label for this) are important, and I wanted to respect that. Thanks for watching. :)

This is the song that people tell 'new to slipknot' people to listen to by mistake, then they hate them...the onramp to slipknot runs through other songs. You can tell this is early slipknot because it's not over-produced. There first three albums (i'm including MFKR here) are all very raw. Honestly, I would suggest avoiding their first 2 albums because there are more songs similar to one and if not more chaotic. Not the best introduction for those who are starting to listen to Metal, but if you were to do more songs off their first 2 albums, pay close attention to how Corey sets the tone of his voice in each song. There are moments where he goes completely ballistic. It is clear that the Iowa album is not the right sound for you but we would love to see you react to the entire album to have a grasp of how they felt back in 2001.

This song is about Corey's high school bully. Someone who tormented him on a constant basis, he absolutely hated the guy. Hence the line "I wanna slit your throat and fuck the wound" this was back in the days when Corey was young, angry at the world and fucked up on whatever substance he fancied at the time. IOWA is considered slipknot's most aggressive and heavy album and most of the songs in the album have this level of intensity and aggression, granted disasterpiece is, in my opinion, the angriest song on the album. Loved your reaction and can't wait to see what you think of the rest of their music.

This is possibly my favourite Slipknot track (although there are so many!) it has saved my mental health on more than one occasion, which may sound strange, but it's so cathartic in terms of chanelling all that anger and resentment etc. That drum break is one of my favourite musical moments ever (Joey was a genius), note how the guitars take on the drum rhythm - so cool! Then it goes into that slow headbanging section. Amazing. I get that it's a lot to take in when you first hear it - especially the first line being quite shocking, and I apreciate your honesty, you are very genuine in your reactions. I've watched your reaction to the live version too and seen that you have warmed to this track a bit. the reason why coreys voice is kinda weird in this album is because corey was an extreme alcoholic at the time. in a q&a he said that he would drink 3 bottles of jack daniels a day wich dropped his voice and made it super raspy. edit: forgot to mention, the screaming technique, or lack thereof he used in the first two albums was INCREDIBLY destructive to his voice and made his talking voice and singing voice super weak. the upside though is it feels a lot more genuine. around Vol.3 he learned from a vocal teacher to do it the healthy way.

By the way... judging by your opinion on their music so far, what side/aspect of their art you enjoy the most... I highly recommend "If Rain Is What You Want", from their .5: The Gray Chapter album. It's one of their most un-characteristic songs they ever put out, more or less crossing the bridge into doom metal territory in some regards... very experimental for them, to say the least. Which is why I give them huge props for this song (besides the fact that it's a VERY good one), for having the balls to do something quite "anti-Slipknot" in a sense... but while still retaining their DNA in it.

Also, hopefully you'll listen to the entirety of the IOWA album (which marks it's 20th anniversary this year!) - it's one of the darkest, most nihilistic, misanthropic, hate-filled to a tangible level and heavy albums not only of the decade, but in the entire metal genre. A real landmark that made elitist metalheads give respect to Slipknot's "nu-metal".
@StirbMensch
@StirbMensch 3 жыл бұрын
Mind you, everyone in the media/labels/whatever expected them to put out something even more commercially successful/catchy in terms of the 2nd album, after the unexpected success of their self-titled debut. IOWA was a big "fuck you!" to those expectations. They really went into very dark places, mentally (the band were at each other's throats while recording this album, since pretty much right after touring extensively to promote their first album, they already had to get back in the studio and produce this) to create this monstrosity of an album.

Enjoyed your journey homie. Orphan is a pretty cool song. I didn’t really like Nero Forte when it came out but it has grown on me a decent bit. Good on you for pushing your way through this one, though. Should have mentioned the live video instead of the lyrics lol. It’s really not a song for most people but it’s interesting to hear different kinds of music. What you hopping into after the slipknot journey?

If you want something from this era with more polish, I'd go with My Plague. Disasterpiece has one of the most shocking opening lines of any song ever, but the chorus is weaker than a lot of Slipknot songs. You can hear the beginnings of the Unsainted formula in My Plague.

I'm not fully through the video but I already know exactly what your talking about. Like a lot of other comments have said Corey Taylor was fueled by rage in his vocals back then and it shows. Personally I love the rage stuff from slipknot but I'm not a huge fan of disaster piece. Honestly my favourite song instrument wise is "lech" the vocals are a tad .. much, but not as graphic as disaster piece. Lyric wise my favourite has to be unsainted. That song connects to me on a spiritual level. But yeah if you haven't already you might want to check out lech, it's very fast paced but it's good. I tend to associate the lyrics with war in general featuring a line such as "no one is bullet proof" Wich I associate with feudal Japan when they discovered guns🤣🤣 it's pretty cool and I'd love if you react to it!

@LaurenSeeWrites This song is definitely not for everyone haha. You guessed it though, The whole band was pretty angsty and pissed off at this time. The lyrics and music 100% reflect that. For context, The band were in a bad mental state(especially Corey) at this point in time. They nearly broke up a few times. It was just pure drug and alcohol fueled hate for everyone and everything. If you want a glimpse into Coreys mental state in this era you can read up how he made the song Iowa, Its disturbing as hell but really gives some insight into how messed up he was. IMO their Vol 3 album is when they really hit their stride musically. The instrumentals on that album alone are top tier.
