As someone who read the books and loved them I actually quite liked the alternate ending in the movie, they did a pretty good job. I remember imagining an alternate ending similar to this (to help cope with the tragic death) but it was cool to see it actually happen. I normally prefer when movies match the books but in this case I got the best of both worlds. A sad but heroic ending and a happier ending. I agree that her death was a very important part of the book but her living was surprising since it wasn’t actually in the book and it helped me feel better. If I remember correctly the director actually discussed the ending with the author.

Caitlin They didn't do an alternative ending, it was just the first part of the final movie - we don't actually know if they would've gone through with the death ending in the second part but the reason she didn't die in Allegiant is that it was only the first part of the final instalment of the franchise.

I finished the third book just now, and came up here to know that the movie has nothing to do with how the things worked in the book. I understand why some of you find the movie good, but still guys don't you think tris's death scene was the most important and deep scene above all? I know I may sound stupid, even more when I just bawled my eyes out after reading it, but if you ask me this movie could've been 10000 better if it followed the book. But anyway, DIVERGENT is going to be my forever favourite novel and I'm never letting Tris and Four outta my heart ever.

It was supposed to be Caleb to go through the death surem because he betrayed everybody in the second book but tris had a change of heart and went there instead of Caleb because surems don’t affect her at all. Tris went there to stop the memory surem being relaxed and in the process David was there and shot her. Tris was successful in stopping him though.
