I built the first release AMT Deora, painted it in lime green metallic. Entered it in a local model contest(my first) and took a honorable mention ribbon. This was 1966 to my best memory and I was 12 years old. The truck was so out there at the time and this video brings back great memories.

I had one. But never knew it was a real car until seeing this video. I think my son has it stored away in a box somewhere.

As a 9 yr old car nut in '68, I had already collected a number of Matchbox cars when Hot Wheels debuted. The Deora was the first Hot Wheels car I'd ever received. (Later trading it for a 68 Mustang fastback after seeing the Movie Bullitt for the first time on television sometime in 69 or 70). The use of the 60 Ford wagon back glass as the windshield/entry door on the Deora was an interesting fact that I wasn't aware of. Thanks 👍

@@retrocarchannel Yup, Every trip to Walmart includes a stop at the Hot Wheels/Matchbox isle... I also have some 1/25 scale cars and trucks. Some things you NEVER outgrow.

I just ordered an original 1967 hot wheels deora. It's one of my favorites

I had ALL the original Hot Wheels in '68. My Deora was Purple with Yellow and Orange Surf Boards that fit into the back window and laid on the Tonneau covered bed. The "Beatnik Bandit" and the "Silhouette" were also real world Custom Cars that Mattel made into Hot Wheels. My first Hot Wheel was a Red '68 Firebird, it came in a Vinyl Pop Up Gas Station.

I had the Hot Wheels car, and built the AMT model kit several times, and in several versions, (including the Camper and the Topless Pickup.) As a boy, I thought it looked cool and futuristic. As a 65 year old man; my back aches at just the thought of climbing into (and getting out of) the driver's seat. Simple oil changes would require lots of drop cloths in the interior. And Lord help you if your front end gets smashed in an accident . . . . But it still looks cool, today! It seems like I'm a year late, but 325th Like.
