So much energy. The lead singer can barely contain himself. Some people connect with their talent and do it young, and then they are definitely rock gods. These guys did it for real. I was a kid when this came out, back when there was only AM and FM radio (tv rarely played ANY rock music) and what made it to radio were generally national hits. This was a GIANT hit.

Huge sound change, definitely have some great hits later on with their more Pop Style music but you can beat the raw, rashy, harshness of this. Im not born any where near this era unfortunuately but music like this seems refreshing to me

As an Englishman, was first introduced to this song on a juke box in a small rest stop just outside of Dallas en route to Galveston and the Gulf coast when working for a Dallas oil exploration company in 1974. Knocked my socks off! Bought the album and have been a fan ever since! What a great rock song!

Saw them in Sydney a week or so ago. They get better with age - they were flawless. They had the whole theatre singing along to Long Train Runnin', when LTR finished out came China Grove and the iconic opening riff. It doesn't get any better than that.

When the sun comes up on a sleepy little town Down around San Antone And the folks are risin' for another day 'Round about their homes The people of the town are strange And they're proud of where they came Well, you talkin' 'bout your China Grove (Talkin' 'bout your china grove) Whoa, oh (whoa, oh) China Grove Well the preacher and the teacher Lord, they're a caution They are the talk of the town When the gossip gets to flyin' and they ain't lyin' When the sun goes underground They say that the father's insane And dear Mrs. Perkin's a game Well, talkin' 'bout your China Grove (Talkin' 'bout your china grove) Whoa, oh (whoa, oh) China Grove But everyday there's a new thing comin' The ways of an oriental view The sheriff and his buddies with their samurai swords You can even hear the music at night Though it's a part of the Lone Star State People don't seem to care They just keep on lookin' to the east Talkin' 'bout your China Grove (Talkin' 'bout your china grove) Whoa, oh (whoa, oh) China Grove

This was my favorite band from the time I saw them on "What's Happenin'!" when I was 8 until I was 10. By that time I owned all their records. And as good as this is, believe me, the "deep cuts" on albums like The Captain and Me, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits, and Stampede are even better. Tom Johnston left due to serious health problems in 1975 and Michael McDonald replaced him, really changing their sound - they became much slicker and more jazz-rock oriented with him, although Takin it to the Streets is marvelous. OK, Dad lecture is over - find the albums I mentioned and hear how consistently good these guys were throughout the 70s!
