This is a Pat Simmons tune (with help from Skunk Baxter). Pat is the only person who’s been in every version of the Doobies. Great guitarist and singer. He has a real talent for writing complex, atmospheric songs (for example Toulouse Street, Clear As the Driven Snow, and I Cheat the Hangman). He wrote one of their biggest hits, Black Water.

"Another Park, Another Sunday" is another Doobie Brothers jam I'm sure you guys would enjoy. It didn't get nearly enough airplay at the time because of one line from the song that radio stations didn't like. Hope you check it out.

That is McD! McDonald joined the Doobies during the 1975 tour filling in for Tom Johnston who was too ill to continue. Jeff Skunk Baxter brought McDonald in since they both toured with Steely Dan in 1974. Taking it to the street was McD's first LP with the Doobies.

Michael came in on this album singing background and harmony vocals. For the old school Dobbie fans this was the onset of the end of the rock and roll Doobs and the beginning of the commercialized lust for the dollar pop song Doobies. More money less jam. The band were really not brothers anymore and there was a lot of disagreement and infighting in the band and with the record label.
@jdw5678
@jdw5678 6 ай бұрын
I don't agree with the "commercialized lust for the dollar pop song" reference. That doesn't fly with music this rich and creative. They were adjusting to the new Pacific Coast sound (with a side trip here to Brazil) that eventually became known as Yacht Rock. I think they were all ready to try something new. I also doubt there was much infighting, just making adjustments, with Johnston leaving and McDonald coming on board.

Patrick Simmons and Michael McDonald sing on this song. Two members of this iteration of the Doobies had previously been with Steely Dan. Skunk Baxter (who co-wrote this song along with Patrick Simmons) was a founding member and on Steely Dan's first 3 albums - and Michael McDonald had been part of their touring band and contributed backing vocals and keyboards on a number of their albums.

"Sign me up"... I like the good stuff genre too and they had me with just the drums and congas. Definite change of sound by adding Michael McDonald and subtracting Tom Johnston, the Doobies were no longer just a driving guitar band, but after hearing MM on the album's title track there weren't a lot of complaints from the record company. Rio features a cameo vocal by Maria Muldaur and Bobby LaKind on congas and that's Skunk Baxter on the album cover, as cool as ever. Thanks for the change in latitude on a cold winter day.
