The voter bases are so small and selective, I'm not that surprised the bans are so absurdly slow and influenced based off X popular player saying to do Y thing vs sheer objectivity- in this case a cross gen influence. Ban voting is given to those who have high enough stats in the specific tier and gen, everyone is given that specific stat line and enough time to be able to reach it, excluding the vote this way means popular players cannot influence it. If you’re putting in the time and effort to reach high play in a tier in order to vote then your vote is going to be based on your own self interest and based on how you want to continue playing in that tier. No one said it took a decade to figure this out. If a pokemon in a tier is overpowered but no one uses it then it’s not a problem, then later once it is being overused everyone notices it’s a problem. Pretty straight forward and easy to understand.

Arena Trap is something that makes me frustrated. For ingame playthroughs, all it did was make the Hoenn Desert Route and Diglett Cave incredibly annoying while being functionally useless in the hands of the player 99% of the time. In competitive singles, it removes the single most powerful and versatile tool available to a player and any point in the game, reducing the skill cap of the game dramatically to the point where it's banned from almost every metagame it has existed in. In VGC, while it's decent in theory, in practice it and it's users are outclassed by Pokemon with Shadow Tag. Which is doubly bad in an environment where that ability is often limited in potency due to the reduced power of switching in doubles. Where is Arena Trap's place in the game at this point? Just existing in Gen 3 OU? I'd love to see the concept changed to fit some context. It could be reworked to punish switches with damage in singles, but that wouldn't really work for current Gens unless it also beat Teleport AND Regenerator, which seems basically impossible to do without being far too powerful or specific.

If so I honestly feel kinda bad for dug, since it will have gotten banned in every single generation of OU since it became good in gen III. Edit: I’ve watched the video further and heard BKC say that dug won’t get banned from gen III OU, but it’s still crazy to think that dug has been banned in every generation of OU beyond gen III.

That's The thing is, Dug doesn't have a "counter" due to how Arena Trap works. Once your Pokemon weak to Dug is stuck with Dug, that's it. This also restricts team building in that you are countering a Pokemon that isn't exactly counter able, and your opponent other big hitters like Jirachi and Clefable are heavily enabled. Essentially, replace any mention of "Shuka berry Ttar" with any Dug counter you want. The arguments will remain the same. Couple that with U-Turn pokemon and you can pick and choose when Dug comes in.

Great video man I have a question tho about ADV UU, could you explain why the NFE clause exists? I looked into the forums, but I didn't see any answer that answered it well. My friend and I both wanted to use Diglet and Haunter, but they were banned. I did see you on that tier's forum a couple times, so I thought you could give some insight into it

back then, the mindset was that people would play uu to "get away" from ou, and nfes of ou behemoths (mostly haunter, bc metang is awful) were thought to be directly opposed to this notion, so the nfe clause was implemented can't really do anything about it now, different times back then

I have an interesting follow up on the topic of trapping, has Pursuit ever been suspect tested? Or is the relative lack of Pokemon that get hit hard by Pursuit (mostly Ghost and Psychic types) compared to an ability like Arena Trap not warrant this same attention?

I think dug should be looked at in adv as well (after the sand veil nonsense is done away with of course). It forces a lot of concessions in the builder to beat stall because something like heracross which would normally go nuts in that matchup is limited to one ko, and the same with like cmwish rachi and other mons that abuse stall. Forcing big threats to trade instead of doing lasting damage is a trade that is way way skewed in the stall user's favor.

This is all related to a much deeper problem thats plagued competitve mons since gen 4 which is the advent and prominence of degenerate strategies. I consider a degenerate strategy anything that tries to break the rules of a 'normal' match... commonly things such as dual screens+set up spam, baton pass, weather abuse, trap abuse, trick room, hail veil, etc.. These things give mons a combination of speed/power/bulk/trapping that is normally inaccessible without at least a turn of that pokemon setting up (often more than that). A strategy is degenerate, in my opinion, if in order to beat it you are not planning against the mons on the team, but the strategy itself. If you played back then, around the time platinum came out, the first real 'hyper offense' teams came about. Strictly played by setting up dual screens with azelf then spamming 5 set up sweepers and never switching. That was the game plan posted by the guy who really revolutionized that team style. These things take the principles of what makes a battle competitive (i.e. prediction, game plan, risk/reward, identifying and executing a win condition) and turns them into a matchup-based game that plays itself. You dont beat dual screens set up spam by outplaying them, you beat it by matchup. This is because the strategy is linear and therefore beating it is polar, there is almost no thought that goes into those games and they are INCREDIBLY boring. These strategies aren't even necessarily overpowered, as you can just pack the counters to them, but it makes the games boring, makes other games less fun because your teams are restricted in order to be able to deal with them.

Blissey will not be banned in ADV OU 1 - Even special attackers can overwhelm Blissey, especially CroCune and Superachi 2 - There's a lot of potent physical attackers that threat Blissey. 3 - Dug can pick off Blissey really easy too with Beat Up 4 - Blissey is not a issue in most tournament matches

@@tijolobrabo8475 Just btw Regice is not a legitimate part of OU because of it's many glaring flaws. Also, these potent physical attackers that can threaten blissey cannot freely switch in. Most of the time they will eat a T wave which can be severely crippling in the long run. Same for dugtrio with not being able to switch in and beat up only does 60% so you can't switch in and beat it, only clean up potentially after something else already died. Superachi can't threaten blissey realistically, especially if it eats a T wave. The fact that I have to run a very specific suicune/ something else niche set in order to effectively beat blissey just supports my argument why it's a complete piece of garbage.

@@alistairsmith6961 Yes. Regice has a lot of flaws. But still a good mon, status are pain using regice tho They can't switch in. But still threaten Blissey 1in1, Bulk Dug also deals reliably with Blissey using Toxic BP Zapdos + Bulky Beat Up Dugtrio Also Swampert can switch in most Blissey attacks, while Toxic can deal with it, Refresh pert exists. Blissey is not a big problem even for special offense who could also beat Blissey with Explosion lure combo. Blissey is just not overwhelming. It's a great mon but you can deal with it, to ban something you need to demonstrate how it restrains teambuilding. On my opinion Blissey does not restrain teambuilding and it's not a absurd unkillable wall. Taunt Gengar also shutdowns it and Explode on it to put the Dugtrio. You need to play carefully against Blissey (I think that DD Tar has a free switch in and free DD in Blissey.) But that's just my opinion, there's a lot of ways to play around Blissey, Just because Regice is in BL doesn't mean that the explosion combo isn't still effective against Blissey, Calm Minders can rule on it. Especially SubCM Jirachi and CroCune/VinCune For me Blissey is not a issue. EDIT : Yes, offensive Calm Mind Jirachi has trouble. Also CroCune is not niche and it was used a lot in tournaments. Even after the Sleep Talk mechanics it's still really good.

The problem isn't Dugtrio, the problem is Arena Trap. Just wait, someone will try using Trapinch for it's Arena Trap. Which... Might be good for killing some steels actually. EQ of base 100 attack instead of base 80 will hurt lots. however it just is REALLY slow. Trick Room makes it a speedy boy, and it learns Quick Attack so it has some priority, and it learns moves like Crunch, Rock Slide, Bug Bite, Giga Drain & Solar Beam (lol look out Swampert) and Gust (ok...). But it can 1hko Magnezone while Mag's Flash cannon does 97% damage, so it's doable. Trapinch guarantees a 1hko on Metagross, Heatran and Tyranitar, where as Dug cannot 1hko Gross. It can 3 hit Ko Cress with Crunch even, but probably won't survive a single hit back.

for reasons explained in the video - dug enables more than just cmclef (jirachi mainly, but many other things like latias and zapdos as well). since dug's ban, cm clef has not been anywhere near broken.

it was never discussed because while it might seem problematic in theory, anyone who plays the game will tell you that magnezone is far from an overbearing pokemon whereas dugtrio was ridiculous. it is much easier to beat mag + stuff than dug + stuff. the reach a trapper has matters.
