I got to see Chicago, The Who, Pink Floyd, ELP, Aerosmith, Boston, The Cars The Cure, Pearl Jam, Cheap Trick, Black Sabbath, Bowie, Neil Young, Prince, B 52s, Tom Petty and the H.breakers, Edgar Winter opening for Leon Russell, REO Speedwagon, Judy Collins, Tina Turner, Today's performance art is either artificially modulated or lip sync'd. Do many realise how many guitar parts and solos Jon Herington masters for these songs, and how many different hot guitarists from the recordings he is emulating? He's amazing. Then to have Boz Scaggs providing rhythm and counterpoint to Jon. Such good performances.

And it's perfect for the song's sleazy but pathetic protagonist: He can afford to buy the best booze and the best weed, and that probably has a whole lot to do with what that half-his-age girl sees in him. Plus, Michael Leonhart's trumpet solo is almost as sardonic as Fagen's vocal.

well, as someone who is old, and loves these guys, and produces music. I don't agree. Music is fine. You look in the old person places and find bad music. That is the issue. musicians are every bit as good if not better depending on what you are evaluating. Most of the band is replacements here and they are young... todays generation of touring people. Nobody is original except fagan. stop being old.

I understand perfectly what you say. Howver in the 70, 80s there was mainstream pop and rock rubbish , just like today. Honestly, Steely Dan was never listened to by the masses, their audience was people who also often liked jazz and what we like to call "intellectual" music. Same today, nothing changed. It's still is a 1% club. The problem is that this kind of music is much less visible today due to modern media and the commercialzation of everything. Rap, Hip hop, pop and fast profit and short lived "music" has taken over.

This is astounding stuff. I was lucky enough to see The Dan in London in 1972, Hunter valley in 2009; and Boz at Blues Fest in 2013 or 2014. Have not (yet0 seen Mike McDonald. Absolutely the best set!!

First time I heard "Hey Nineteen" on the radio, I immediately recognized Donald Fagen's voice, and wondered what band it was that featured him on as a guest vocalist. One guy at work told me in fact it was Steely Dan. I told him to double check that because it sounded so radically different than Aja album, or any other work of theirs that was previously recorded. I couldn't believe it when 2 days later my older brother came home with Gaucho! I ate that entire album up! It would be years later when I learned that with Gaucho (unless I am mistaken), Fagen had finally found the sound he was looking for. And I thought- What the heck was He and Becker doing all that time before that?
