THE DUKES OF SEPTEMBER is a super group comprised of pop/rock/R&B icons Donald Fagen (Steely Dan), Michael McDonald (Doobie Brothers) and Boz Scaggs.
This video is taken from "Live at Lincoln Center" in NYC which was filmed in November 2012 for PBS' "Great Performances" series. It features the band's dynamic rock and soul revue and not only showcases their well-known hits such as Reelin' in the Years, Lido Shuffle and Takin it to the Streets , but also forays into rock and R&B gems such as Sweet Soul Music and Love T.K.O.

Saw Boz in ‘76. The back up band was Toto! Silk Degrees was just coming out. Fleetwood Mac & the Eagles played after! What a day / night it was! It was also mt 20th Birthday!

@@M123OCT It's not fair to compare anyone to Steely Dan. But they didn't find their groove right away either. There early stuff was not so great. I love Bruno Mars - he's versatile and does a myriad of music. I really like Ed Sheeran too. But truthfully I've gone back to exploring jazz. I especially love Latin jazz - so much goin' on!! What are you listening to?

@@jeanmarielieb9127 The older I get, the more I look back, because much of contemporary music is computer-based, auto-tuned, quantized and completely lacking any soul, any substance, any meaning. I quite like what Bruno Mars is doing with Silk Sonic (but, ironically, that is almost a complete recreation of a sound from the '60s). I don't hear anything produced right now that will still be listened to in 50 years, 100 years, unless there is a total reversal in music back to a more organic form, with melody, and harmony, and real skill. Music has simply become a commodity. Sadly.

@@M123OCT Ironically people seem increasingly one dimensional as well. We had the luxury of exploring poetry. We also felt a drive to "Find ourselves". That led to a lot of musical exploration. It seems like now people are called to find a niche where they can be accepted. We were encouraged to march to the beat of a different..... We were each of us unique!! The message was to embrace others uniqueness. No one was perfect at that either. Just my take ~ What do you think?

Particularly cool: that Boz, Donald, and Michael didn't just take turns fronting the band. They buckled down and put the work into knowing each others' songs - knowing the chords and the lines and the harmony vocals. Or at least Boz and Michael knew the harmonies; you wouldn't really want to hear Donald singing. Except on Steely Dan songs, for which his voice is perfect.
