There's a line where Mei yells "I Like Boys" which is super out of place since that's something her mom and family would expect. Right you are my friend, it just made me find people who were, and made me then realize that I could be very much gay. Edit: Wow, this has gotten a lot of discussion. Raine Whispers made me ask about non binary stuff (also look at them) and kinda got my to start going down a path of self discovery. That's the original meaning of this comment that I just now understand how to communicate Edit 2 cause why not: Also representation has helped normalize something that I considered different when I was younger. When I was younger, I grew up with buddies that used gay in a bad way, so that is what I had connected to it. @oxo12 жыл бұрын
I've always felt that kids are more receptive and laid back about diversity in media than what a lot of adults think. For example: Paranorman. I watched that movie years back and I watched a few clips a while ago to jog my memory and I think I did take notice that the jock, Mitch, admitted to having a boyfriend at the end of the movie as a kid. I wasn't drilled in with any negative feelings towards the LGBTQ+ community by my household and I am a standing ally today. It just wasn't brought up to me at the time. To me, Mitch dating another man wasn't seen as sexual or disgusting. It was just normal. Passive. In my younger years I was also really interested in animated short films. There was quite a popular one called In A Heartbeat, where one boy greatly admires and loves another student. I assume he's popular as well. I thought of that as natural too, while also being quite adorable. Then there's the viral reaction channel with "KIDS REACT TO IN A HEARTBEAT" and even they're quite positive about it. I learned about the LGBTQ+ community through a lot of KZbin videos as a child and it never had a bad impact on my life. To me, it was the same as boys kissing girls. There's not much of a difference on paper because you're kissing a person you like, no matter the gender. Hatred and discrimination is always taught. Whether through family, friends, social media, school, anywhere in the world. But acceptance can grow there too.

A thing to remember is that a lot of Homophobes see queerness as a kink not a facet of someone's identity. To them, a gay man isn't a man who loves other men. He's a man who indulges a kink that involves having sex with other men. Telling kids about queerness is seen in their eyes like telling kids about BDSM kinks. You'll never be able to get them to see otherwise because they refuse to understand the difference.
@nutella71622 жыл бұрын
That's why one of the first things someone will usually say to insult a gay person is target the sexual part of the relationship (even if the person in question is aroace, a virgin etc.). Something along the lines of "I bet your bf gives it to you good, I bet you two buttfuck each other every night". They think of it as two wild animals using each other as holes. To them the idea of two same-sex people genuinely loving each other is impossible. The first thing they'd think on the mention of a gay couple is some shady nightclub filled with drug addicts and cigarette smoke with people fucking in the toilets and not a cozy couple cooking dinner at home. It's that preconcieved notion that views gay couples as inherently more sexual (and that sexual part being "worse" than straight people's) that's harmful

Renegade Cut said it with his She-Ra analysis, and I think it can be applied with the idea many don't want to see problems exclusive to women shown in popular cinema as well. Saying "I don't hate (marginalized group), it's just that children shouldn't be seeing them!" is a form of prejudice no matter how much they try to dress it up. That line of thinking inherently makes an argument the very idea of someone existing is inappropriate and vulgar to the rest of society when the norm is not and thus has less of a right to actually be shown in public. Which, yes, is a prejudice. There are plenty of ways to be bigotted against others without directly stating your hatred of them outright. Furthermore, explaining these issues to children isn't anymore hard to explain to them than the other examples of intense stuff regarding adolescence and sexual orientation that are deemed normal. It's like a story somebody posted where this father took his kid to see the Batman and he was fine having his child watch all the violence and physical beatdowns, but it's only when there was a scene implying a character was bi when he took his kid out of the theater.

The “date say gay” bill is a bill that stops sexual talk for k through 3rd grade kids. I have seen teachers try to literally indoctrinate kids into being gay when they have no idea what it is. Yes kids are smart, they can think for themselves, but we live in a SOCIETY that teaches kids to listen to adults. So if an adult is telling an impressionable little kid to be gay then that is bad. I have seen teachers take a neutral stance where they explain a few things, but vague enough that they go to their parents about more detailed information like the kid is suppose to. Also people getting mad because 2 boys have a caring relationship that borderlines being gay is also very stupid. Though extreme homophobia is the exception not the norm. Here was the main character celebrating the holidays that I celebrated instead of Yet Another Christmas Special. Did this Chanukkah special somehow invalidate the thousands of Christmas specials/songs/movies that already exist? Of course not. It just gave me something to look at and recognize as being like me. The same is true for LGBTQ relationships. If I was looking for straight characters to relate to, I'd have my pick of way too many to list. But until recently, an LGBTQ teen wouldn't have had anyone to relate to. Thankfully, that's changing. More people being able to relate to more characters is a very good thing in my book.

Definitely agree with everything said here. It's really odd how gay pairing are all treated as inherently sexual, like it's some sort of kink, while straight pairing are generally always considered totally wholesome and non-sexual unless we're explicitly shown them having sex (which of course never happens in media aimed at younger audiences). I do think there's something problematic about equating sex with unwholesomeness, and Americans have a lot of strange hangups about the topic as a whole, but that's neither here nor there in regard to the discussion at hand. But like, why use Turning Red footage for most of the video when there's almost no LGBT rep in the movie whatsoever, beyond the subtext of Priya and the goth girl dancing together for like a second onscreen? Strikes me as a bit odd.

@faith46572 жыл бұрын
That is true. But not all parents think that way though, there are some parents that are okay with it but not old parents are like that. Not all parents want to expose their kids to that level of worldview yet, because to the kids themselves maybe maybe even to the parents sometimes a man and a woman who always be the default couple pretty much all the time as it started from a man and a woman and maybe it'll end with a man and a woman we don't know, so they basically just want to show their kids that this is okay. Plus not all parents want their kids to be raised by the internet, is their job to take care of their kids not the internet. If a parent wants their kids not to watch TV they will do so and then they don't care for anyone that isn't in their house. So me personally I don't like to force other parents to do things, or voice complaints because they're not letting them watch this type of this or that me I just say it's their choice their their kids, the reason your kids how they see fit and they should choose so and I don't like to butt my heads into that. I confess, there was a point where I felt like the whole 'they're trying to shove gays into everything' was a thing. However, it's not because I had anything against the LGBT+ community. It's because I saw it as producers trying to 'represent' these people in order to placate them and expand their audience by trying to appeal to that demographic. I have nothing against gay representation in media, so long as it comes from a genuine place. When I first started noticing this trend of shows having gay characters, it didn't feel genuine to me. It's like how shows that are geared primarily towards boys will have a girl character as part of the main group so that girls will have a 'reason' to watch it. Fortunately, I've noticed that this is becoming less and less of an issue. The genuine representation of concepts like female empowerment, gender equality and non-straight people is getting better. Because we are young. I’m 14 and their 13, we’re too young to do it. But seeing representation in media of people like me. Makes me so happy. People see me! They want to support me! Then scared conservative Christian families will tell people that this is “harming” and “s3xualizing children” when all its doing is telling queer youth “hey! You exist! Your not weird! Your okay! You deserve to exist and not want to....Unalive” while it’s telling heterosexual kids “Hey! Please don’t bully these people, their children just like you! This is normal, just as functional as straight romance, and you shouldn’t bully them unlike what your parents might shit out of their mouth hole”. So people trying to take away that representation, those rights. Calling it child mistreatment, it hurts.....Really. I feel powerless. And people are using me as a political tool. Because of course if people think that treating children terribly is bad. So they use us and say that it’s dangerous to transition, or to be accepting of your child, when the opposite is true, if you don’t support your child they will want to be their own demise, I’ve had so many dark thoughts because of my family, thinking it would be easier to not live. how does the bill specifically discriminate against gays? I thought it made it illegal to discuss any sexuality (including straight) without informing the parents you are doing so
@ryankramer87792 жыл бұрын
@@sarahfishyfish1 technically if these lawmakers and their supporters were consistent about it then yes it would. However, many people especially from red states like Florida tend to carry a double standard towards sexuality, mostly in favor of heterosexuality. Boy and girl have a crush on each other? Yeah, that's totally normal and there's nothing wrong with that. But two boys or two girls have a crush on each other? No no, that is inherently sexual and inappropriate because sexuality=sex (it doesn't) even though heterosexuality is still a sexuality. Going into specifics outside of the double standard, there are two other things to bring up: 1. This bill would require any staff who have knowledge of a kid's LGBTQ+ identity to report it to the parents. Even if the parental figure in question isn't very LGBT friendly which is VERY DANGEROUS and strips the child of their agency to come out whenever and wherever comfortable. 2. Clubs that are secretly pro LGBT spaces would have to relinquish that status and expose themselves to the parents, again not all of them being LGBT friendly. So in conclusion, on a technical level the answer is yes, discussing any sexuality would be illegal under the bill. But in the state of Florida and the world at large, straight people and couples are held to a different standard than LGBTQ+ people and couples so the law won't be equally applied to all sexualities which means that the law is in fact discriminatory to gay people and other LGBTQ+ people

Not all parents can be trusted with important topics like LGBTQ+ and even sex education which is why they are taught at schools. We have schools to teach kids what not all parents are capable of teaching or what not all of them desire to teach. 2. As for point number 2, there are cases where secrecy can lead to bad things like grooming, but they're too few to justify a crackdown that will make life all the more hell for LGBTQ+ kids. Not to mention that many proponents of the bill unironically believe that teaching kids that people other than heterosexual and cisgender people exist is grooming children. And as for the grooming part of this, I might recommend checking out what the Republican Party in Tennessee has been up to in recent weeks because it certainly shows that 1557 was not about grooming and that it was about LGBT discrimination after all. Again, in a vacuum the law wouldn't be bigoted at all. Authoritarian in spots, but not bigoted. However, this bill exists in an environment with a history of LGBTQ+ discrimination and was written and passed by anti LGBT lawmakers and officials with the purpose of shutting down discussions and making life hell for LGBT kids

Another layer to turning red is this idea that children are these pure sacred angels untouched by the horrors of the real world, first of all untrue. kids are mean as hell and are still figuring out there’s more then the sense of self they learned as babies. Second teenage hood is a very awkward in between of adult and child because it’s the stage in our lives where we’re learning what it means to be an adult and the baggage that comes with it. It’s like there’s this expectation that we’re supposed to remain pure till we turn 20. Obviously there’s nuances and boundaries to talking about sex in relation to teens and tweens but generally having these discussions is a lot more help then harm.

Whatever you say now won't change it I'm sorry that's just the truth. And I'm also an advocate for their children you may say that they're damaging your children but how they protect their kids is their own stuff, because they themselves are the ones they're gave birth to their children they want to fill their children with their worldviews as in their kids not the worlds. It's a parent's job to love and take care of their kids not the worlds and whatever is happening in their house is for them and to be solved in that house. You may see it as them damage in your kids they don't see it. And for other people's kids their choice how they want to raise their kids my choice how I want to raise my kids, your choice literally anybody's choice how they want to raise their kids no one is wrong when it comes to children most of the times, because they just want the best for their kids. You may want to stop this propaganda and this nonsense that's going around but if you try to force people into liking something or a worldview they're just going to hate it, you have to ease them in have patience. Otherwise they just never going to change, and if they don't want to change good whatever it's their choice you shouldn't try to force it on them as long as they're not hurting anybody.

The thing is, those 100 years didn't count for Aang at all. He was frozen and didn't age in the least, physically or mentally. The fact that he's 112 years old is more of a technicality, as he was never able to age. This leaves a 2 year gap between him and Katara, but I still personally found the ship weird because of their different levels of maturity. Not saying that Katara was always mature, but she still seemed a lot more mature than Aang at times. The scene in the Ember Island Players where Aang gets upset and nods at the "I thought you were the Avatar's girl!" line and proceeds to try to kiss Katara without consent... was pretty yikes to me. I feel like some of this comes from people who have trouble recognizing that love, sex, and romance are inter-related but not synonymous concepts - or at least have trouble doing so consistently. I remember a conversation from back in college when gay marriage was being debated where someone said that such relationships were only based on attraction and sex and not true love so why would they even WANT to get married? They were FASCINATED when I told them about knowing more than one gay or lesbian couple who had been together for years and (except on paper) were the most "married" people you could ever imagine - because it had never occurred to them gay couples could bicker over who does the laundry or whatever. On the other hand, I'll see people respond to most of the fan base shipping two anime characters of the same gender with arguments like "they can't be GAY; the vampires in this world are canonically asexual!" And...OK, sure. But you see how these interactions read really romantic, right? And has it occurred to you that there is a reason why people who are asexual AND aromantic have to specify that, instead of treating one as equivalent to the other? These characters may or may not want to bang, but "just friends" CLEARLY doesn't cover it.
