I think one of Beat Boys' biggest flaws is that he is so broken but just soldiers on, and this results in him being not the most aware of others' trauma. Like of all of the titans (including the ones not represented in the show) he has the most twisted story. He has a rare genetic disease, and with his parents being scientists they try to cure it. One of the scientists that was a family friend, kidnaps him to do dangerous experiments on him resulting in his powers. Then his parents are murdered by a villain and Gar had to watch helpless because he couldn't control his powers yet leaving him with survivors guilt. This all happened before the boy was 7. How he manages to function is amazing (later on in the DCACU all of the titans die with Gar being the only survivor and having survivors guilt again but at this point he is very broken.)

Not only did he get a rare disease that turned him into Beast Boy/Changeling, but after losing his parents and finding a new family in the Doom Patrol, he loses them too, including his foster mother Rita Farr (Elasti-Girl), and his foster father Steve Dayton (Mento) becomes cold and distant before almost becoming a villain. And then everything with Terra happens.

He is a very strong person, but yeah he needs therapy... and a hug...so happy in the original Teen Titans show he has friends that support and care for him...the duo he did with Cyborg in that show was such a great friendship!

In defence of Beast Boy, he is the youngest out of the Titans (about 14), so it's pretty understandable that he's immature and self-centered at times. He's also the only one out of the five who didn't have a formal education, and he lost his parents at the age of *5.* As a side note, his actions are pretty realistic for children who have suffered multiple traumas. He's a people pleaser, constantly craves attention, is sensitive to criticism, gets attached to people very easily, and has clear social anxiety at times. He's honestly pretty fascinating looking back.

Actually I believe that the reason as to why Robin was chosen to help carry those scenes was actually to show why he’s a good leader and a good friend. I don’t look at Robin and Raven as a couple as much as I do as friends and teammates, at least not in this incarnation. I also believe that Robin was also chosen because he knew how Slade’s mind worked the best and because he knew most of Slade’s moves. And could bounce off of Slade well. Lastly I would like to point-out that most of Beast Boy’s interactions with Slade didn’t happen until later on so he wouldn’t know how Slade operated until much later on.

Raven really is one of the best cartoon characters of all time. She really is the best character to come from the “goth girl” trope. Because she was much more than just a goth. She truly loved her teammates and viewed them as her family and her introverted nature made her so relatable. She also wasn’t just goth for the sake of being goth. She really had no choice based on her demonic background and her need to suppress her emotions to prevent her from hurting other people. Her Season 4 arc is still incredible to this day.

But to be objective that would leave BB and Robin tied as "possible couples" (speaking of the original series) if it wasn't by the fact that BB has a personality and way of being that openly annoys Raven, even though deep down she appreciates him as a friend. Robin, on the other hand, is serious a litle mysterious and do likes to isolate himself to do things alone frrom time to time, like Raven, who claims that he knows her best than the others. We have the episode where Robin hallucinated with Slade, where they literally started to have a connection which is what eventually allowed Raven to become closer as a friend to her. I'm not saying that Robin and Raven should be a couple, much to my sadness, but compared to BB, they are much more compatible and if Raven were to have a couple, Robin fits that role better.

Beast Boy and Raven being exact opposites plays a key role in it. Garfield’s bright, fun, and goofy side balances out Rachel’s more dreary, dark, and serious persona. She’s also able to humble Beast Boy if he gets too cocky or immature. They’re also able to relate with one another in terms of pain. The two teens have always hidden it behind their usual behavior and no doubt feel most comfortable to take the masks off when it’s just them. It’s why they are legit canon in the comics and fans like me wish they were in the show.

For me, I think ultimately it was David Slack indicating they were written, purposefully, as an "old married couple" as the show went on. They were written with the intention of having a relationship off "deep loyalty and affection, but also laced with conflicting personality clashes." So, I do think the pairing is not only intentional within the show, but that reframes almost all of their interactions post-Terra.

This video essay is odd - it says we imagined BBRay but then explains why it clearly is there, is well formed, is well received, and makes sense as a standout coupling. The BBRay relationship wasn’t imagined or illegitimate - it is literally recognized by the creators of goth OG Titans and Titans Go. That said, it grew out of a natural, well-written, loving friendship… which is exactly what many good couples grow out of. Robin and Raven, on the other hand, had a clear big brother and little sister dynamic. They were extremely close and while BB was the love interest Raven was learning to let in, Robin was the protective brother who had always been there and always would be. There’s no conflict in that and both relationships are really cool, but to set them at odds is so weird - especially when Robin and Starfire are also so prominent and established as a romance.

For me, BBRae was my fav in the Teen Titans show ship wise largely because they were so fun to watch, because they were so different. I also agree with the s4 choice of Robin and Raven suddenly being tight, it did feel unearned. I didn't hate it, but I would've been more interested to see Beast Boy taking on Robin's placement instead, not just cause I like the ship, but I did love their dynamic, and he did get the closest with her.

DCAU was especially guilty of this as over the course of all the shows/movies Batman basically grew a harem consisting of Talia, Catwoman, Wonderwoman, the Phantasm, Batgirl, and I’m pretty sure a couple of others, all while all the big Batman movies were pairing him with a new love interest every film.

I feel like Robin and Raven are too easy. They're so much alike that's its kinda boring. They don't really push each other out of their comfort zones and don't have much conflict at all. While I obviously wouldn't want two people who constantly fight getting into a relationship, it's nice to see some conflict occasionally because it's what often brings growth. I also feel like despite Raven and Beast boy being so different personality wise, they can both relate to each other on other levels. Raven has insecurities. She feels like a weirdo and lacks social skills because she needs to keep her emotions in check. She's half demon, so she struggles with seeing herself as a monster and probably assumes everyone else sees her the same way. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the people she saves cower in fear because of her powers and how she looks when using her powers. Beast boy isn't the most normal looking. He's short with green skin, pointy ears, and a strange looking nose. I'm pretty sure I remember an episode where he flirts with some girls, and they laugh at him or something. He probably struggles with his outward image and is also seen as a weirdo. That paired with his goofy, nerdy personality probably limited his relationship with people outside his team.

I think the authors not thinking of BB and Raven as couple ended up helping the ship become better. Robin and Starfire is very shoehorned in the story, and like you said they usually don't make mistakes with each other, which is nice and I have a hard time thinking of them in a romantic relationship with anyone else, but it's also a bit boring. Beast boy and Raven are this compelling slowburn romance with their relationship being developed in real time as Raven learns to be more open to intimacy and Beast boy learns to be more respectful towards her, their character arcs getting confused with their developing relationship.

I've always assumed when watching the show as a kid, Robin and Raven forming a profund bonding at some point off screen was a natural way for these characters to progress and from all 5 of them already being there for each other on numerous episodes. I always felt that raven, and Robin had a more brother sister relationship. Raven and BB, however, have very early friends to romance energy. Both begin to see that the other brings out their better qualities, but not wanting to deal with these new feelings just yet. Robin and Raven is a good combo, but understanding everything about someone is what Robin is raised to do. He is trained to learn as much information as he can about everyone. To an untrained eye, it makes him look like a good friend when, in reality, he's just doing research on you behind closed doors. Robin can be vulnerable around starfire. Raven and beast boy work as the rock and balloon, one keeping the other from flying away. The other lifting them up.

I always thought it was kinda funny how subtle their ship was, like, the fact they had an "Almost Kiss" moment still gets to me because it just sorta happened. The pairing is solid in building up their friendship first. If they never officially dated I think the fanbase would have been a bit sad but understanding to an extent. They would also ways be in each others corner and I don't see their friendship corroding. Honestly they were a good ship to show that not all relationships start with romantic feelings or are overly romantic even during the dating phase. Their bond would carry them through thick and thin which is hard to come by when even a small misunderstanding in a lot of shows leads to a full season of "I can explain" scenarios and broken hearts. I want to know why Cyborg is left out of the mix!?!?! Growing up I assumed it was because he was the only black character and back in the day interracial dating was sort of taboo on the big or small screen. And since they did not really introduce a black leading lady (I love Bumblebee but she didn't pop up a lot) that he had to stay single. The interracial aspect could have played a part, but I feel that’s not the main reason(s). I don’t think their ages were ever explicitly stated, but Cyborg always seemed older than the other Titans by at least 2 years, if not more. If I had to guess I’d say that Robin, Starfire, and Raven were 16, Beast Boy was 15, and that Cyborg was something like 18 or even 19. That kind of age gap at that life stage can be a real damper on potential romance, which is why I think Cyborg was always the big brother to everyone on the team. Especially to Beast Boy. Another factor is that he was set apart from the other Titans via his backstory. A lot of his angst was that he was a fantastic high school athlete that was poised to get a college sports scholarship, until the accident took that away from him. So he lived most of his life as just a “normal” dude. Compare that to Robin, an orphaned child taken in by Batman, or to Starfire, royalty from an alien world who was sold into slavery, or to Raven who had a top level demon as a dad, or to Beast Boy who was basically a green, shapeshifting elf from a young age. It doesn’t stop any of them from being friends, but it does kinda leave Cyborg on his own because the differing circumstances create more natural pairings. Robin and Starfire share a common root of being people who were supported in early life, but also saddled with enormous expectations. Robin was the pupil of fuckin Batman, enough said. Starfire was heir to the throne of an entire planet. Beast Boy and Raven share a common root of being fundamentally different from everyone else and having to deal with inner power that can be unmanageable. BB has his unstable genetic code and grass cosplay, with a inner beast to manage. Raven being half demon, grayish skinned, and being a literal heir to the apocalypse. As an aside, I think they’d be great together, AFTER they’ve grown up some more. What we see in the show is a good foundation, but I don’t think either (especially BB) are ready for something serious with each other within the show’s boundaries.

Honestly, I actually don't mind the fact that they never ended up becoming "canon" at the end of the show like Starfire and Robin did. I like that I can read their interactions as something more subtle and I honestly do believe there's some implied mutual feelings between both characters. To me, it's not really because their relationship is meant to be read as more platonic (though you can certainly interpret it as that way!), but more so that they are meant to be an extremely slow burn type of couple, mostly due to the fact that they are so different from one another. As teenagers, both still have a lot of growing up to do and I feel that in order for the pairing to be earned, it has to be done when they have both already went through hell and back for each other, in a similar style to how Robin and Raven were done, only with more romantic tension between them. Even then, I still want for their eventual get together to be done well and perhaps it was a blessing in disguise that it ended without them being official.

Shipping people of the same gender despite it not being canon has always existed because there's little to no canon gay relationships to be invested in, whereas if a male character just stands next to a female character not only are they shipped but more often than not it will be canon. There are way more same sex friendships in media than boy-girl friendships, especially ones that have emotional weight within the narrative and that is such a shame because it implies that men and women can't be friends without having romantic feelings.

So, just from the first episode you use as an example, I think the reason people see "romance" rather than "friends" in these hints is because of the blush stickers, and the way Beast Boy's eyes sparkle. Yes, those could be non-romantic signs, as well, but generally speaking, such things are signals of hormone-induced emotional reactions, not just embarrassed "okay maybe friendliness isn't weakness" reactions. Again, speaking regarding _how fiction is presented._ It can be quite hard to write non-romantic friendships. Honestly, I think that ironically Star vs. The Forces of Evil did so with Marco and Star very well, to the point that the Blood Moon Ball episode was _very awkward_ because you could see how the two of them were taking this sudden romantic implication as genuinely something they hadn't really thought about before. Not as a realization of their true feelings, but as, "Wait, what? That--is that a thing?" and it throwing their friendship into awkward places. I am not sure what I would suggest to Teen Titans to have made it less romantic and more friendly, but... yeah. I think this is the same thing that causes yaoi fangirls to assume that all male friends are secretly gay for each other. And yuri fanboys, too, re: girl friends. But while it maybe wasn't intended, the signals in the animation choices were there, I think, for Beast Boy and Raven.

A lot of fan pairings tend to come with varying degrees of baggage, from one or both parties already having canon love interests to one being an unscrupulous villain that has canonically caused the other party a lot of grief and pain, so when it comes to Beast BoyXRaven (specifically the cartoon version), I’m pleasantly surprised how not only baggage-free the ship is (there’s never even a mandatory “We’re not a couple!” denial gag scene) but also how it feels perfectly plausible within the context of canon. Of course, crazy shippers will try to distort and misconstrue canon events in order to pretend the pairing was canon all along, but regardless, the basic set-up for a romance is there, the writers just never took it in that direction, BB and Raven have that odd couple friendship going on, where they are polar opposite teens who keep getting at each other’s nerves but they always end up at each other’s side and sharing intimate bonding moments in the end. Whether fan fic writers wish to interpret that as budding romance or not, I can’t accuse them of twisting things or pulling that story development out of thin air XD

I rewatched the show after being cleared of my extreme shipping as a teen and yeah, their moments are still some of my favourites but you can tell the writers didn't intend for any romantic connection, Teen Titans has always been good at male-female friendships and they didn't feel like it. I really like your take on BBRae. Of this ship being basically fully buit, but not really launched. At least in the show. Frankly when TT were on TV in my country, I was too young to be engaged in character shipping, but even then I was a little jelaus for Raven whenever Terra took the spotlight. It's not realistic. Most people are straight and see friendships with the opposite sex as a way to feel out compatibility and get to know each other before a relationship. The only way it works is if both sides don't see any romantic or sexual tension. And that usually doesn't happen. The idea that it's this common thing is what's unrealistic. Also why men and women are having a much harder time talking to one another in recent times. On one hand, physical intercourse is open, but the emotional intimacy you get from actual romantic relationships is frowned upon.

Believe it or not this isn't unprecedented. It's known in archaeology as "Meme theory" where essentially an idea is so well liked it kind of just wills itself into existence. That's how it actually works IRL though. Most male/female friendships have romance as the endgame. Unless it's someone you're not attracted to or who is a blood relative, friendships without romantic undertones don't really happen between the opposite sexes.

I think that Robin had the deepest relationship with most of the Titans. He is the leader and he respects and understands most of them. I didn't find her having a trust in Robin an indication of anything other than Robin was a good leader and a good friend. Robin also figured out Tara couldn't control her powers. She assumed he was told but he just figured it out.

Honestly I dont care about it being originally not even hinted at, i've loved and shipped these two together from since i can remember and honestly the fact that these two characters who had nothing romantic going on managed to get enough fan service that *every single* -CANON- content created about them since the original show has put them together romantically, is enough to make me think they deserve the right to be together Plus their personalities together just work for the obligated dork guy goth girl dynamic every show needs and the scenes that they do have together are absolutely adorable, their relationship is the cutest thing romantic or not but i cant help but love the idea of them being together Sure, Terra and BB could make more sense considering the source material and how their relationship was then but if the bbrae got this amount of fans and this amount of recognition from the canon content™ creators than there had to be something there

Robin and Raven will always be more siblings to me lol. I actually agree that it's fine that Raven and BB were only friends, as much as I like them together. And not necessarily just for the girl/guy friendship always turning romantic thing, having two romantic relationships within the team and then Cyborg just there would be kinda weird imo. It would become easily to accidentally write with more attention on the romantic relationships which would inherently leave Cyborg out. But having Star and Robin dating, Raven and BB close friends, BB and Cy best friends, Robin and Raven sibling-like, Cy and Star and Cy and Robin close friends, would force more focus on the platonic and familial relationships between the members of the team because now those totally outweigh the 2/5 members in a romantic relationship, which would make sure everyone's involved in the stories.

I think it would've worked if they got more seasons and Cyborg x Jinx was a thing since that ship could've added so much depth into Cyborg's character (which I felt the show lacked). It would've been cool if they explored the hero x villain pairing with him and jinx, choosing between his love for her or his moral values, her or his team mates, and how dating a bad guy (who harmed a ton of innocent people including you and your friends) pokes holes/calls into question how good you really are as a person. Yeah we got Beast Boy x Tera but that's different, they're relationship didnt start off as her being a villain. Plus she's off that role now, she's redeemed and her memories were possibly erased.

Apparent hot take: the Titan who should have had the "Go to Hell for Raven" arc should have been Cyborg. From the prequel he's the one with both emotional maturity and lack of tunnel vision enough to spot Raven being standoffish and assure her she'll fit in just fine. Not to mention that bonding episode the 2 of them had over his car, which carrier excellent "sib friend" vibes. It makes sense on paper, AND they put in more work than Raven and Robin. I wish Cy and Rae had more moments like these, because they kind of were the show's platonic ideal of opposite-sex friends that didn't get shipped as much. That said, I'm cool with Raven and BB being lovers OR platonic. A good relationship shows the friendship that makes the couple work, and their friendship is more solid than 80% of the main couples I can think of.

I always interpreted Robin's relationship with Raven to be more of a surogate-father-daughter thing despite the age difference or lack thereof. Especially, when he was carrying her as a little kid, when Raven got de-aged in Season 4 after being used as a portal, it just felt right to think of them as... well, yeah, this is the sort of father figure she'd want & look up to. Also, about that Beast-boy hall interaction: It's actually worse than you think. He intentionally looked for a confrontation with her. When he saw her in the hallway, they were lined up to collide. Without looking up from her book, she sensed this & moved out of the way to avoid him. Seeing this subtle mov, Beast-boy got angrier & *intentionally* bumped into her to knock the book out of her hands as they passed & start a fight. He was already looking for a fight with Raven as soon as he saw her in the hallway. He just didn't start yelling & shapeshifting until after Raven called him out on his toxic behavior.

The writers of this show always meant to have them have this married couple dynamic: they fight at times with their opposite personalities but they deeply care about each. I always felt like this version of them could date if BB was a bit more mature and Raven become a bit more easy going. I agree that if they did it would just be a cherry on top but in some respects it's not needed 😎. Also, yes Damian and Raven could work when Damian is actually likable 🤔.

I've always felt that Raven and Robin would have been a great match together, not necessarily because they look good together (even though they do) but rather, they've shared such a closeness and intimate moments that neither Raven or Robin had with anybody else in the team. Raven was able to see into Robin's mind, seeing (from his eyes) the death of his parents, Dick Grayson taking The Bat Oath to become Robin and Raven essentially serving as a kind of confidant for Robin. In turn, Robin has always made sure to include and make Raven feel welcomed, showing his willingness to accept her without question and in the Trigon story arc, it was mostly just Robin being there for Raven. They've also comforted each other and showed unconditional support for each other (which true, is something they've also done for the three other members of the team but, that closeness between Raven and Robin is truly noteworthy). Also, note in the episode Birthmark, when Raven froze time, she specifically chose to unfreeze and bring Robin with her, as opposed to choosing anybody else in the team.

Statement I couldn't stand this statement as someone with alot of siblings 1. not all siblings act like they hate each other but will stick up for one another 2. BB and Raven actually existed before this show aired. We never got to see a true ending to the series, so we never truly got to see what sort of relationship these two could've had moving on. Slowly Beast Boy really begins to "Mature" Though he's still a jokester, from his Monster phase, Terra phase, and Raven being so isolated early on. They are so opposites, yet slowly they begin to help change each other for the better. Out of all the characters, BB and Raven make the most sense. Robin and Raven only make sense as friends because they are so similar in a sense.

This is why cyborg is one of my favorite characters in the show because unlike all the others while he does seem to have a romantic interest at the end of the show with bumblebee he kind of seems like the one in all of the medium that is both the most mature but without being too overly mature like Robin is I really think they should have gave Tara to cyborg because of that reason because it would have left the Beast Boy Raven ship alone while also making it very apparent that cyborg is the ambassador of the group for superhuman people because he can relate strongly to *everyone* in the group unlike the of the other members

This may sound weird but I'm pretty sure the Raven/Beast Boy ship began 10-15 years prior in the comics. In New Teen Titans Kid Flash (Wally) learned that Raven was trying to brainwash him to fall with her and her corruption by Trigon finally reached the starting gate. After failing with Wally, she corrupted Changeling (aka Beast Boy) and took him as her "pet". Well after they came back to the good side they'd eventually start dating in the comics. The cartoon hadn't even been announced yet as a possibility back then. So it took her "taming" of Changeling to make them into a couple that keeps getting back together again and again and again.

As much as you hate the term, the Teen Titans showrunners have literally described Beast Boy and Raven's dynamic as "bickering siblings". Also, I honestly think the random bond between Robin and Raven in season 4 wasn't out of romance, but because the show felt the need to involve Robin with every seasonal arc. He paralleled Terra as Slade's apprentice in season 2. He had a falling out with Cyborg that drove him to Titans East in season 3. He even took down the Brain together with Beast Boy in season 5. But season 4 feels the most natural due to their mutual chemistry and the involvement of Slade. Though, the Teen Titans Go comic (NOT the show) blatantly hinted a one-sided attraction from Raven.

I completely agree. I loved them together in the comics and TTG, but in Teen Titans I honestly didn't get it. I know why people shipped it, like I'm sucker for the grumpy & sunshine pairing too. But I dunno why everyone acted like they were canon in the show. I remember when I was in elemantary school I told my fren I was conflicted because I shipped Robin with Starfire and Raven(not anymore. now i only ship him with starfire), and I honestley didn't know which one I liked more. But then she said Raven was dating Beast boy, so I corrected her telling her that he liked Tera. But instead of realizing that she was wrong she instead called ME a stinky butthead. And that's something I will never let go. As long I live.
