I interpreted Melisandre's "years beyond count" to mean Mel has no clue how long she spent studying? She was underground like Bran, or at least lost the day-night cycle stuck in perpetually-dark Asshai, and everyone around her was glamouring themselves, so they weren't visibly aging?

Hmmm ok for Varys to be the mole, he can't listen through the walls, since Tyrion never says his Myrcella-Dorne plan aloud in the book... I guess a little bird could read the letters, if Tyrion left them unattended prior to taking it to Pycelle? Varys does a very good job at being confidently wrong about the contents of the letters: he comes to Tyrion after his chats with Pycelle and LF, indicates that he overheard Tyrion's conversation with LF about sending Myrcella to the Vale, and that he knows Tyrion sent a letter to Dorne with terms of alliance, guessing that to sweeten the deal, Tyrion offered Doran the wardship of one of Joffrey's siblings. When Tyrion asks which one, Varys replies: "Tommen. You could scarcely offer Myrcella to Doran Martell and Lysa Arryn both." (Tyrion IV ACoK) I suppose you could read that line as very knowing? Pycelle supports the Lannisters because he thinks Tywin is a good leader... he's a little oblivious to how paranoid and short-sighted Cersei is, but he's still less impressed with her than he is Tywin... he knows the Dorne alliance is a good idea, and that Cersei would blow up about it... yeah, I could see him keeping it from her. And since Varys probably thinks he's got a better show at getting Dorne to join YG than the Vale, that's extra incentive for him to inform Cersei, to try to prevent the Lannister-Martell alliance...
@Mj_Jetson6 ай бұрын
The problem with connecting Varys' deep voice to his non-missing balls (wow that's a sentence I never thought I'd say LOL) is that Varys also drops the fake falsetto voice when he tells the story of how he gets cut: "when Varys spoke again his voice was different somehow" (Tyrion X ACoK). Would kinda break the narrative if he was lying here?
@Mj_Jetson6 ай бұрын
With Varys being a Blackfyre (and I guess Serra Mopatis being his sister? Vaerys and Saera Blackfyre?) any ideas on where he fits into the Blackfyre family tree? Aerys hires Varys sometime after 278... Cuz if Varys (and Serra) were born a bit before 260, then that makes them excellent candidates to be Maelys' kids... Maelys killed his only kid in the draft but that was cut, so its presumably not canon? Could inform their childhood - perhaps Varys was sold to the mummers after his father died in the War of the Ninepenny Kings, the same way some of the Rogares were sold off when their family's power collapsed? Add some fun nuance to Varys' interactions with Barristan, his father's killer? It would make Varys about 40... hired by Aerys in his early 20s... somehow no one in Westeros was aware that Maelys had kids and Illyrio was lying when he said the Blackfyres were extinct in the mal line?

@michaelstalkfleet6989 The timeline for 282AC - 284AC is a bit of a hot mess and we know less than we think we do. I've read a bunch of different timelines and they all have to make assumptions because of GRRM's slippery writing. Even if you take the text at face value where no-one is intentionally lying there's not really much we can say for certain when mapping out the events of Roberts Rebellion and the relative time between them. We know Robb was conceived in the fortnight after the Battle of the Bells (Catelyn X, AGoT), but we're not even certain whether that was in 282 or 283 (The Lost Lord, ADwD). We also know that Jon is around 8-9 months older than Daenerys (SSM - July 11, 1999), but we're not sure when that was because we don't know when the Sack of Kings Landing took place, it's said that a Lannister army was outside Kings Landing a fortnight after the Battle of the Trident (Jaime II, ASoS), though looking at a map that seems like a ridiculously short time to march ~800 miles (assuming Tywin was at Casterly Rock) and we don't know how long they were outside the gates before they were let in. We don't even know when Roberts Rebellion 'ended' because Ned is said to have gone south after the Sack to fight the final battles of the war (Eddard II, AGoT), though we never hear of any other 'battles', just ending the Siege of Storm's End & the Tower of Joy (which aren't really battles in the context of a war). Also, Ned never thinks of Jon as his child in any of his chapters in AGoT, he's always "the boy". I'm in the camp of B+A=J and R+L=D, with a baby swap at Starfall. We don't know where Brandon or Ashara were before he was killed in Kings Landing and we don't know how much time Rhaegar and Lyanna spent together. Jon and Daenerys could both be older than they think they are, the actual events of their births aren't as concrete as people think they are. Explanations like "Cat would know Jon was older" fall flat because babies are born at different sizes and grow at different rates (particularly in a society with pre-modern Pediatrics), she's also a first time mother with Robb and wouldn't be an expert.

Caitlyn and the foreshadowing of the seeing herself in stpne in the mirror: Are there allusions other than the old starks in the crypts of being trapped in stone and essentially only being able to wstch? People all say they felt their presence in the crypts and like they were being watched... If so, is there any text that describes how Robb handles/interacts with his crown? There is a passage about how LSH is in a cave sitting there with the crown in front her and she is kinda just holding it in her hands, not quite fidgetting with it. When Bran wargs into Hodor, Hodor iss still in there and hiding in his little safe place. What if Robb warged into his mother instead of his direwolf and, much like being trapped in stone, she is in somee little nook inside herself and letting Robb control the body? Robb's dying words were "Mother" as Jon's was 'Ghost." Evetyone is speculating based on the assumption that Robb has had the true death sincec they killed his wolf right affter he was killed. But what if? It's not impossible given the rules of the book. We just need to see if ther are any subtle clues and i can only think of the handling f the crown and obsession with it and his last word. The revenge part too but a mother would want that too.

What's most convincing to drop the proliferation of Glass Candles to me, which was barely brought up here, is that it's completely OP-ing! So in hundreds of points across the continent people have access to mind-warping telepathic FaceTime devices? It's a crazy anomaly to have something SO overpowered be SO common. Magic is supposed to be rare, and to incur a price - a heavy price - to wield. An abundance of GCs is an inflation of magic, decreasing its value. And it ALSO decreases the limitations and challenges of living in this para-medieval world, which are essential to the story! Writers need limitations in their made-up worlds and this would just be too much to circumvent those limitations, it'll mess up too many plots. Characters do act with limited information, take a long time to reach places, etc. I do like the idea of immortality ONLY in the context of paralleling the GCs to the WW net. It strengthens the argument for ice/fire dualities everywhere 👍 but again - OP!
