Yes! and I think some inconsistencies in how people think about a Ned is not only natural and realistic like Carmine says, but it might also be characters like his kids understanding that Ned *needs* to put on the Lord's face in front of others to keep Northern traditions alive even if he doesn't fully subscribe to them. He does clean his sword in the pool, unknowingly feeding blood to the Old Gods, so he is traditional in some sense at least.

On the "Jon's an idiot" because he uses a sign to get Ned to do something, that might be because "he doesn't know his own father" or and I put this to you as someone who lives within a religious community. A leader, even when not believing in something themselves needs to publicly acknowledge them. The "sign" of the dire wolves is precisely that sort of situation. Whether or not Jon knows nothing, he still knows that Ned has to show some level of religiosity in front of his household. Especially if that household needs to justify to itself how with his permission, the Southron wife imported septons and septas and is educating the next generation of Northerner lords "within the Faith"

Yeah, not sure why Preston just does these extreme simplifications. Ned is a bad and cruel person because he wanted Bran to go to the execution? Public executions were widely intended by people of all ages not to mention he is specifically doing it to show Bran about their ways and the responsibility of being a Stark. He didn’t do it maliciously or cruelly. Even if that’s how you view it from your own modern point of view it’s clear that’s not how Ned views it and not what his intentions were. Jon just wanted to help Bran keep the puppy. He said what seemed like a potentially persuasive argument and it did work so doesn’t seem like it suggests he’s an idiot or knows nothing about Ned.

Great video, Preston and Carmine, as always. I can’t wait for the next installment. About Ned’s broken promises, I always thought Lyanna told Ned that Jon had to be King, due to Rhaegar’s prophecy researching. “Promise me Ned,” that he would do anything (even go against Robert, if need be) to ensure Jon was King. On HOTD they focus on Aegon’s prophecy. I think that likely comes from George as he’s referenced that idea before, of Aegon coming from Dragonstone not as a conqueror but to unite the kingdoms (perhaps due to a dream) to defeat some future evil. What does everyone else think?

@Seelenverheizer8 ай бұрын
I think some of the pointed out "inconsitencies" about Ned make a lot of sense. Like the point about the signs and beeing religious. Cat is quite believing in signs and is also quite religious and so for her Ned who might slightly consider these signs and mostly likely doesnt talk about the old gods to her to not annoy her maybe. Same with the kids thinking he is very religious. As the kids mom is a fallower of the 7 it falls to them to teach his kids his religion like taking them to the hearttree, which even if he is midly religious makes the kids assosiate him way more with religious things. Also its reasonable the Septa mostly tought them about the 7 directly and Cat let the profesional do it so the kids might think their father way more involved in his faith. Also to me Ned is a traditionalist and the stunt with the pubs absolutely is bad juju not to allow them the pubs once its mentioned to him that way. Him allowing Arya to do sword-training is not him beeing progressive, its him getting flashbacks to Lyana and his repressed trauma allowing her to do as is her nature. Also at that point i feel like Ned did struggle parenting 2 girls and is trying to make it easier for his girls to cope with the new environment and not with their mother and brothers anymore, and if the sword training helps Arya, he will enable that.
@gokbay30578 ай бұрын
The Arya thing not being progressive for him is quite obvious since in the same scene he allows her to keep the sword and train he tells her that she will marry a lord and have children.

Cersei know that Jon Arryn is investigating the incest. We get that from Cersei's POV in AFFC. Stannis knowing is a non-issue for the Lannisters for the reason that Stannis himself gives: it's in Stannis' self-interest for the kids to be born of incest and Robert doesn't particularly like him anyway. Robert will dismiss it as Stannis grasping for power. I think the easiest way for all of the events to make sense is that Cersei thinks she ordered Littlefinger to murder Jon Arryn but Petyr actually did it for his own reasons (probably because he hates Stannis; maybe because he's Sweetrobin's father). She doesn't know how Petyr pulled it off (so she isn't lying about not knowing who killed Jon Arryn). She does know Pycelle let him die (she accuses Pycelle of as much in AFFC). Jaime has no clue about any of this though and Cersei isn't about to confess it to Tyrion. But if you read Cersei's thoughts about Jon Arryn in Feast, there is this idea in her head that she dealt with the threat from Jon Arryn similarly to how she dealt with Ned and Tyrion: "She had contended with Jon Arryn, Ned Stark, and her vile, treacherous, murderous dwarf brother." We know she's involved in getting Tyrion convicted. We know her involvement in Ned's arrest. She thinks she did something similar to Jon Arryn. The previous sentences are things that she suffered. This is a more active "contended with".

Really interesting stuff. If English Lit classes were like this at school I would have paid way more attention to my teachers. Also, I feel Jon Arryn always comes across as a convenient plot device rather than an actual character that existed within the world of the story. For decades he must have been one of the most powerful political players in the realm but it feels like no one besides Ned, Robert and Lysa had any kind if real relationship with him. Characters barely think about him besides "Maybe he was murdered". And is it ever established where Ser Hugh came from? He doesn't seem to be associated with any noble Vale house yet somehow became squire to the Hand? Not a plothole or anything, but feels a bit glossed over and I wondered if the character may be more fleshed out in earlier versions of the story

Sure D&D get credit for how to start and adapt early GoT but idk if I could agree to give them those flowers about starting shows and adapting books after watching the first episode of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. It was /fine/ but it wasn’t nearly as good of an adaptation as the Tencent version nor was it as good a one as season 1 of GoT. I was struck by George’s background as a television writer and can only surmise his work on the show is what really made it shine, and his departure as what really sucked the magic out. D&D left plenty of book material unadapted before they went into full fan fiction territory in later seasons and 3BP kind of felt like those middling seasons where they hit some great beats with Arya in Bravos or Cersei and the church but was over all ~mid~
