I love the way he holds the pencil, he holds the pencil like traditional artists would hold it. Adorable, loved the painting.

Digital artists usually go way overboard with their layers. 50+ layers for every brush stroke they make and use layer modes (multiply, overlay, etc) on everything. It's nice to see something a bit more on the "traditional" side.
@icefireobsidian74906 ай бұрын
Oddly enough waaay back in ancient adobe photoshop days (version 5) too many layers could cause a server to crash… especially if the file had raster and vector files mixed in. Not that I ever accidentally took out a server at a print shop as a junior graphic artist or anything…. *darts eyes around* I tend to use always shift back to one layer from maybe three … trained as a traditional artist and sometimes I need to stay in one layer for my sanity lol 😂

Most Pro Digital Artists don’t use that many layers tho
@2355Kyle5 ай бұрын
Depends heavily on the style and varies between artist. I am a professional artist (not my main account right now just my personal one) and I use as few layers as possible and generally have a layer for my background, main subject matter and then perhaps one or two more if I am trying something out like an alternatively painted face or design to what's on the main layer.

That is some bullshit exaggeration 😂 why are y'all so bent on hating digital artists

I really like the simple 3 layer painting process you talk about here. I am still very new at digital painting and what I struggle with most is removing the sketch lines without removing the whole layer. Also I need to be looser in my digital art. And this was very inspiring

1:10 Presence: main layer to establish foundation drawing to block out baseline structure. Doing underlying color layer. then top layer working toward sculpting and then finishing details -- The big distraction: Thinking that having 16 million color, an 8k resolution, and more than one hundred layers is absolutely necessary. Coming from a traditional art background, 12:46 When my mind says what now, I save as original version 1 then a copy version 2 that I can come back to play some more, whenever. I'm scared of too many layers , it can be frustrating, and makes the process less enjoyable when trying to keep up with all layers. it's absolutely inspiring to see your process and how you prioritize of what works for you over all distracting tools and still be able to make a beautiful paint. Thanks for the video.

Using tons of layers is mostly for comic book style coloring, it's not necessary by any means.

Non digital artist here and one of the reasons for not trying it is the layers and knowing the best way to work. Actually I'll add brushes to that list, as I only have the Photoshop defaults and when I watch other YTers, they have so many custom brushes, I of course won't have. I appreciate you talking about your 3 later approach ans also that you're using pretty default brushes. You have answered my 2 questions/issues at the same time. 🙂

Getting started is allways my biggest challenge. I've had some luck with importing a traditional sketch to the canvas and then jumping off from there. Mostly I think I just need more repetition.

After watching some of your earlier vids, and me "translating" your traditional process to digital, it's super cool to see your digital art process! Digital painting is incredibly fun. I hope you make more videos about digital painting. There is an abundance of coloring tutorials out there, but not so many people showing a painterly digital process like that! I use procreate and krita bc I can't really afford the CSP monthly subscription. It is still super valuable to hear you explain the tools you use so I can find similar tools in my programs.

This is hilarious and so reassuring. As a trad pen and ink artist who transitioned this year to digital or rather decided to add digital to my repertoire, the 3 layer technique is something I’ve been doing as well.😂 Also the bit about pushing paint around and figuring stuff out on the go is super relatable. Thank u for this I feel seen and it makes me less self conscious about my lack of experience.

Why is digital painting mostly about fantasy characters and games? For example, Artstation is dominated by this theme. It is very different from real painting themes.
@ayaneagano60592 ай бұрын
Because lots of artists do digital for clients and companies-it’s very commercial compared to analog (physical) art. Fantasy themes are popular in video games, so lots of digital artists do that
@user-wh4wm3mw7l2 ай бұрын
@@ayaneagano6059 I agree with you. I like some analog art themes like landscape, still life, urban scenes and figurative painting but sadly it is pratically non existent in digital. When I see something, most time it is game-oriented.
