Every 10-20 years, we have a global recession, due to some bank that's too BIG to fail...when will we learn and adapt? Ukraine and Russia may only be 3.5% of the world's economy, yet Africa will now starve and millions may die because we didn't plan ahead. Are we starting to see the disconnect between percentages and spreadsheets, and actual human suffering?

Russian Girl's Voice: Why are you using the US dollar to measure the Russian economy? How is it not clear to you that we do not use the US dollar as a means of internal and external payments? The economy can be realistically seen only if the differences in prices are taken into account, and the product in Russia costs five times less than in the EU or the USA. The Russian economy was worth 4.7 trillion PPP dollars, which is the fifth or sixth largest economy in the world in 2021 (Germany's report on its economy is awaited). By comparison, the EU's GDP is worth 20 trillion PPP dollars and the US's 22 trillion PPP dollars. GDP per capita in Russia is 32,000 PPP dollars, in the EU 46,000, in the US 68,000. So, we are talking about the fact that Russia's GDP is about 4 times lower than the EU or US GDP, not 25 times as you want to present. Italy's GDP measured by the PPP method is twice less than Russia's, you live in the belief that it is 20% higher. Do not be surprised that the Russian Economic Union (EAEU) worth 6 trillion and China worth 26 trillion are working on a new world currency that will destroy the dollar very quickly, and the dollar is the only value that keeps the United States united, which means you will not be able to print $ 8 trillion uncovered to splurge, buy factories around the world and hold your military bases around the world. Political analysts in the East, who predicted today's events, say that the United States will disintegrate according to the Yugoslav scenario when the dollar loses its world mine reserve currency status. I personally think it will be worse, because Yugoslavia was ethnically composed of South Slavs. Your biggest curse is that you think that China and Russia are the same countries as 30 years ago, it is fatal for you to underestimate us.

@@rogerburn5132 You can always find videos or texts that support a point of view, be it yours or mine. Can I say it's the truth because someone else shares my opinion? And how many predictions in human history have turned out to be wrong? People often only remember the predictions that have come true, rather than the countless numbers that have not come true. For example, look at what doomsday prophets claim every year. We just don't know what China will do yet, there are arguments for behavior X and arguments for behavior Y. China's government observes how other global players behave. Whether there will be a battle of autocracies against democracies or if ultimately, the desire for a stable economy will prevail cannot be said at the moment. China is sending ambivalent signals, but will probably end up choosing options from which it expects the most profit. China thinks in longer time frames and publicly stated in its "100-year plan" that it wants to be the number one world power by 2049. Whether a strong or a weak Russia will benefit China's plans remains to be seen.

“ Why use the US dollar to measure the Russian economy?” When one uses the yen the euro or Sterling the result is the same: the rouble buys much, much less than it did a year ago, and a quarter to a fifth what it did in 2013. That wouldn’t matter if Russia didn’t import anything but it must. Russia could manufacture much of what it imports, but in such a corrupt country it is hard to do business; it is parasitised by the need to give bribes and “protection” money, and further parasitized by the chronic, casual thieving and fraud, that developed among managers and employees in state-owned concerns during the Soviet era. So Russia is going to have to shift its consumer habits away from Iphones to some substitute, and to develop a smaller, more tightly surveilled substitute for the variety of online sites, including social media sites, that small businesses used to sell their goods through. Another problem is that borrowing is now horrendously expensive, so it’s difficult for companies to expand. In any case, a country that has had to shut its stockmarket for two full weeks is in panic mode.

@@eh1702 Russia is making trade agreements at the country level. For example, Russia imports Chinese products at a much lower price than the US or the EU, and Russia has changed its monetary policy, so that the ruble will be stronger after the liberation of Ukraine, than it was in 2013, because foreigners will now have to pay for Russian resources and Russian products in our currency. In order to pay, they must first buy rubles, which raises the value of the ruble. Otherwise Russia has huge gold and foreign exchange reserves. It is important to note that so far we have allowed the ruble to float freely, we have not intervened to protect its value, because it makes imports more expensive and encourages exports, so we want to keep the ruble at this level for some time, until we lower unemployment to around 3%. BTW import do not make even a 10% od our gdp.

To define the parameters of China's possible actions entirely within an economic context, is going to be, imo, a mistake. There are many more dimensions to what their motivations may be. In the west it's pretty simple, where money holders are the dominant controlling force behind domestic and foreign policy. We cannot project this to a side that we do not fully understand, because we do not share the same values and priorities. The preamble to WW1 was all about how it wasn't possible due to globalization and how economies were too tied up.

Those are just commonly acknowledged facts. You really think companies spend billions on lobbying for no reason? The majority of Americans support weed legalization, universal Medicare, etc. But the govt seems to hate them. Why? Because that’s not democratic by any means. It’s almost like there’s private interests at play . . . This doesn’t even touch upon home owners and the entire NIMBY crisis driving up home ownership prices to benefit property owners. We have plenty of empty and fertile land ! Enough rain falls etc. We have poor health care systems that's all. The rest is all okay.

I certainly hope you are right. It would be heartbreaking to see Africans face starvation because of this horrible and unjust war. I hope other countries can help the poorer countries (not just in Africa) so people will not face hunger.

You have just rightly said that Africa is a continent, not a single country, so one should not generalise, and yet you generalise directly afterwards by saying that food is not a problem of the continent of Africa.250 million of Africa's 1.2 billion people suffer from hunger, especially in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Burundi, Chad, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen. And related to the war in Ukraine: due to the lack of artificial fertiliser from Russia, Egypt, for example, will have enormous problems with its future harvests if it does not receive help from other states. Since several rainy seasons have failed in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, the harvests in the fields have withered. More than usual, these countries are dependent on food imports. Supply shortages due to the war, embargoes and import stops are leading to rising energy, oil and food prices worldwide. Poor countries in particular will feel the effects. So please do not claim that there is only a problem with the health system on the African continent. That is cynical.

As an African I find that statement about hunger in Africa because of war in Ukraine offensive. It is really condescending. I have never even seen wheat at the market ( probably because it goes to foreign factories that make flour for bread or pasta which are not traditional African foods) but I see a lot of beans, maize, guinea corn, sorghum, millet, rice, yam, cassava, cocoyam, tomatoes, pepper, vegetables , cows, goats, sheep etc. Prices may be higher now like the way it is around the world but they are not scarce. All the farms are located in the country. To suggest Africans are hungry because they can no longer eat bread or noodles should not make sense to anyone.

For reference ukraine exported approx. 72.5% as much food (in dollars) to Africa as Russia did. About 4 billion usd for Russia and 2.9 billion for Ukraine. Even if we stoped the sanctions the food exports to Africa has probably been cut by a lot due to the Russian invasion.

By comparison, the EU's GDP is worth $ 20 trillion and the US's $ 22 trillion. GDP per capita in Russia is 32,000 ppp dollars, in the EU 46,000, in the US 68,000. So, we are talking about the fact that Russia's GDP is about 4 times lower than the EU or US GDP, not 25 times as you want to move. Italy's GDP measured by the PPP method is twice less than Russia's, you live in the belief that it is 20% higher. Do not be surprised that the Russian Economic Union (EAEU) worth 6 trillion and China worth 26 trillion are working on a new world currency that will destroy the dollar very quickly, and the dollar is the only value that keeps the United States united, which means you will not be able to one year $ 8 trillion uncovered to splurge, buy factories around the world and hold your military bases around the world. Political analysts in the East, who predicted today's events, say that the United States will disintegrate according to the Yugoslav scenario when the dollar loses its world currency status, I personally think it will be worse, because Yugoslavia was ethnically composed of South Slavs. Your biggest curse is that you think that China and Russia are the same countries as 30 years ago, it is fatal for you to underestimate us.

Humbly, this is precisely my point, intracontinental trade within Africa (especially towards food). I ask the question is there and or why don't African countries join together and create their own monetary funds? As an American of African descent, my ancestors who are today's African ancestors were an irreplaceable component to the building of the wealth that Europe and the West wield today. I'm not an expert, however, within my idealistic opinion, African countries can use the Western appeal towards democracy as an appeal towards debt forgiveness, debt suspension, and or interest reduced debt, in order for countries to get back on their feet and thrive. Within my humble idealistic opinion, I will state that Africa, once again, could become one of if not the wealthiest continent on Earth. Africa's people have built and their descendants are building wealth for nations around the world. Africa's people are truly Her greatest resource, treasure them.
