As a Polish person this is such a difficult topic. On one hand Willson's presidency and his involvement in the peace conference is what allowed Poland, Czechoslovakia, etc. to emmerge as independent nations, or at least was a major factor in it without which it would have been much more difficult to achieve, but on the other his presidency was the reason why Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union even existed in the first place. Without Willson Poland might have remained split between Russia, Germany and a small Polish rump state left after the collapse of Austria-Hungary or all of it would have been absorbed into a newly Democratic Russia, or even a Zapadoslavia, a unified Czech, Slovak and Polish state, potentially to this very day, but there would be no Nazi Germany and Soviet Union declaring war on Poland and killing nearly 20% of its population, and decades of communism One thing is for certain: Without Willson the world would be a more peaceful place overall. Someone has to be a looser in that arrangement. Sucks that among these loosers would be us.

If Teddy Roosevelt had been President at the end of WW1, would he not have supported an independent Poland and Czechoslovakia? I tend to think he would have, but I admit my knowledge of Teddy's specific views is not complete...is there good reason to think he would have opposed a free Poland and other nations?

@@iKvetch558 Czechoslovakia would pop out of Austria Hungary anyway, but Poland was carved up three way with the largest chunk belonging to Russia which was in the Entante with France, UK and the US. Even if he supported Independent Poland it's not like he would pressure Russia to release one of the richest and most populous regions of their country bc it has aspirations of independence... The far more likely scenario is that Poland would be all under Russian control (possibly becoming independent sometime later) or divided between Russia and a joint Czech, Slovak and Polish state in the wake of the collapse of Austria-Hungary, or between Russia and a rump state in the south.

I still believe the Spanish flue would’ve still happened but it would have been identified earlier by the majority of the public and get dealt with faster. And probably wouldn’t be named the Spanish flue.

In my opinion, it's hard to get much worse than Wilson as far as presidents go. The only one that even competes is Andrew Johnson. I would be curious to hear other people's picks.

At this point, the Republican and Democrat parties are set in their ways and we desperately need a catalyst to cause change and shake them up. I know this video is the ultimate argument against voting third party, but if each side acts like the other team's presidential candidate will be the third coming of Woodrow Wilson, a third option can't be that bad.

National healthcare is one of the pillars of moderns western countries along with things like nationally subsidized education. The fact that its 2023 and there are still modern countries that not only don't have it but deny health care for BS reasons is more shocking and alarming then things like lack of gay marriage. Not only that but US companies are actively pushing for privatization of health care using the oh so "successful" US model as a "shining example" for many smaller european countries that have national health care so they get start pushing into those markets and its horrifying. This summer doctors in Croatia protested in part against this because of how insidiously the interest groups are pushing for it by having ministers in their pockets systematically reducing wages and hospital funding for a decade now to the breaking point, and when doctors complained about not being allowed and given the means to help their patient's these "lobbyists " and ppl in their pocket use that as a reason why it should be privatized. This should fucking concern people A FREAKING LOT. Business has no place in health care or education and i argue that we need to fight against it to a militant degree because violence is the only avenue left.

I find it funny how after this video came out the republicans in the states did this weird thing where they tried to redeem wilson as a great historic figure. They failed miserably because there wasnt near enough they could point to without people cringing.
@sookendestroy1 Жыл бұрын
I've never liked the "people in the past didnt know what they were doing, it was a different time, they didnt know any better, it was just what you did at the time" argument, when you think about it for 5 minutes it falls apart. People in ancient Greece were arguing slavery was atrocious, the founding fathers admitted this too when the US was founded. Theres many historical events where people knew full well what they were doing was immoral, people from all times attempt to justify their actions, whether it's the greater good, the bible, the excuse that the enemy is stupid or evil or what have you. History is a story told by the victors, the survivors and those who can manage to get their story told, so when you look back now at things we assumed were the way they were historically described you start to see holes.

US has done that for all it's land, basically on paper it's bought everything. Independence they agreed to pay back debts from before the war. Louisiana purchase. Beat Mexico then paid for the land they took. Alaska bought. That little extra bit from Mexico bought. Hell the US even paid Spain for the islands they were blatantly stealing lol
