Yeah, they will continue to grow, the problem we are having now is that they don’t have enough prey (mostly hares or wild rabbits) to survive on their own. Stray cats eat also the lynx’s food. It’s getting difficult

Here's some great news. The Iberian lynx recently reached the thousand individual milestone!! From 2002 to 2020, the population has went from 92 to a staggering 1,111. Let's hope they multiply even more this decade!! PD: In 2021, the population grew by 23% and reached 1365 individuals! PD2: 1668 as of May 2023!!
@jaimedelgado75292 жыл бұрын
I heard it hasn't been spotted in Portugal since the 90s. U know if there's truth to this?
@gumarks_2 жыл бұрын
@@jaimedelgado7529 I just looked it up. It seems that in recent years there have been efforts to reintroduce the Iberian lynx in Portugal (so I guess it hadn't been spotted the years before). As of March 2020, Portugal stated that the Iberian lynx is "safe from extinction" in Portuguese land, so that's great news!! PD: As of February 2022, there are around 200 lynxes in the wild in Portugal. It's quite a small number if we compare it to Spain, but they're definitely recovering!

This was the whole spanish society working towards a goal. From scientists working on captivity reproduction and restoring their habitat, to the administration building elevated passes trhough roads, to normal people driving slowly on their vehicles and paying their taxes proudly to conquer one of the most difficult tasks my country has ever done. It was decades of full commitement and its not even done yet.

Here in Alberta its illegal to hunt the wild rabbits that inhabit the city, as a result we have a lot of wild predators that live right within the city limits. Bobcats, coyotes, and raptor birds are very common to see. In order to keep the Iberian lynx thriving, you need to keep the rabbit population stable.
@gutemorcheln61343 жыл бұрын
That's exactly the problem mate. Iberian lynx were actually doing quite well until a particular person decided to introduce myxomatosis into his private estate im France, causing devastating losses in rabbit populations across Europe.

Amazing and absolutely stunning animal! So graceful, sleek and elegant! LOVE those ears most! And to think that in UK/Scotland they have been arguing for more than 2 decades if these cats are safe to reintroduce back to their forests/landscapes. They are scared of this cat!! What a joke really....we should give them as much room and habitats as we can....to make sure they never ever are on the brink again...
@joseguerreiro59433 жыл бұрын
To be fair, this one is an altogether different species and wouldn't be considered for reintroduction in Scotland (or anywhere outside Iberia). The one who is currently being considered for reintroduction in Scotland is the Eurasian lynx which is much bigger and can take on deer. But I totally agree with the sentiment of your comment, they should definitely be reintroduced.

I mentioned it a couple of years later to a Toulouse University naturalist who was very skeptical till he asked just where I'd seen it. Whereupon he stated that there had been another report in the same place of a very small lynx; also thought to be Iberian. I was setting up a mountainbike event. A rider saw another Lynx but that was the size of a large dog fox
