ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Chess Dugas’s story in How My Last Family Visit Set the Stage for Estrangement (The Scapegoat Club) highlights how difficult and painful reconciling with family can be. In my reaction video, I discuss why many estranged individuals feel unseen, unheard, and emotionally drained when they try to reconnect.

It’s a long road before going no contact. Being betrayed, gaslight, talked bad about by “family”. I don’t need a family if that’s what it is. I had to come to a place where my own inner truth and experience became more important than outward appearances. I knew the backlash and judgements I would face and it was worth it in the end. I always thought that once I heal from all the pain I’ve been through maybe I’ll feel strong and want to reconnect. It’s been 5 years no contact and that day hasn’t come.

Thank you for sharing. I get it and I’m sorry you went through this with your family. Those I’ve worked with in similar circumstances have shared they sincerely hoped their family would somehow change because they wanted to have their family in their lives. It’s sad. This grief happens for many estranged individuals.

Thank you, Maria. To all the people who criticise this lady; I suggest they walk a mile in her shoes, and only then will they realise she is NOT a victim! Not everyone wears their heart on their sleeve or are an open book. Therefore, one should not judge anyone until you have the full story. There is an expression here in the UK that says, "No one truly knows what happens behind closed doors." I speak from experience, so I know exactly what it's like, and it is devastating. So, when you are next out and about attending to your tasks, offer a smile or a "Hello" to anyone you happen to see, and show kindness. Cos, boy, we need it in this cruel world! Thank you again, Maria. I am so glad I've come across your channel. I just wish I found you 15 years ago! Since my dad died in August 2020, I have had to isolate myself and block all communication from my siblings, for my own wellbeing.

I thank you for sharing here. We say that in the states also. We have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. It’s been important for me to do my best to present both sides of this painful conversation. What touches me most about this woman’s story is her sincerity to want to have a relationship with her family. I think it’s safe to say most people want loving respectful relationships with their families. When that’s likely impossible evidenced by the inability or unwillingness to repair and do the work, the question becomes am I making myself sick trying? It’s heartbreaking when there aren’t attempts to repair. I highly respect this woman for her efforts. I’m sorry you went through this with your siblings. We all deserve families who love and respect us.

Excellent video & thank you Maria. I can relate to a lot of what your guest speaker is saying. It’s certainly not easy & it can if you let it cause you to fall apart both mentally & physically. I now believe Radical Acceptance of the situation I find myself in is the best way for me. My Estranged adult child is aware that my heart & door is always opened. But still no reconciliation after 6 yrs. I’m now ok with that but it did take a toll of many years to get to an acceptance of it all. 💐

Honestly, her father shouldn’t have made that comment at the pub, but the fact that he did shows that his daughter is someone who is very difficult to deal with and the whole family agrees. Even though she put a lot of effort into having a relationship with her family, perhaps her behavior didn’t help her efforts. It would be good for her to self reflect and try to see what’s her part in the situation. To put it in perspective, think about that person in your life that you cringe when you see their name on your caller id. That person is putting time and effort into calling you, but if they drain you each time you talk to them, you are not likely to appreciate their efforts. Sometimes it’s not easy to see how we come across to others
