we use 32bit mini linux for all the user interfaces on our products. There are a ton of industrial applications using small 32bit systems

That is a great point. That is probably the direction 32 bit will go in being focused away from consumer and the continued support will hopefully be for the industrial applications.

I'm actually one of the few upset that they are doing this. I have Manjaro running on a 32 bit netbook. Linux began as an alternative to widows that could keep old machines running. I've heard Debian will continue support, so in a few months I'll probably have to switch to that, or one of the smaller distros. Oh, I forgot to to point out that as of the time I'm writing this, it seems like Ubuntu, Fedora, and now Arch are going to drop support all together for 32 bit in about 7 to 9 months. At least, that is how I understand it.

You say that it's okay to shut down support for 32bit Linux just cos 90% of ppl don't use them ... the same logic goes for developing software for linux. Only 2% of ppl use linux, does that mean development should be stopped?!

MrKomer Your argument is invalid since 32bit is regressive.

I definitely don't use 32bit as main desktop, but I use old 32bit computers that people give away or throw away for lots of things. File server, website server, an old laptop to hook up to your TV, CNC controller, my nephews entry-level computer, etc.. I like to use 32 bit linux for that stuff. Hope I can continue to use linux for these tasks for years to come

@@theralhaljordan7337 I can recommend Haiku (open source reimplementation of BeOS) for old computers. Not only does if support 32 bit, but it runs faster than Linux does, and is easier to use for ordinary people. You can even run Haiku on 20 year old computers. The project needs donations, but it's in beta now and actually runs great. A new beta release should appear soon. Libreoffice, Krita and Blender are some major apps than runs on Haiku right now.

But the reason most noobs use linux is to resurrect an old (in most cases 32-bit) computer.

There'll still be 32 bit versions avaible, the thing is about stop developing more. I think that the Legacy Support argument is really not coherent, as "Legacy" is something not being developed anymore.

Dropping support for 32bit is just the dumbest thing ever, there are lots of people who can't effort to buy a 64-bit computer just because of the moods of the developers. Linux itself is not going to drop 32bit support. The real thing is that canonical is lazy, and greedy of money to continue support. I think that many people should switch to debian when the lifetime of Ubuntu 16.04 runs out..

Michele Bucca Upsetting over 32bit is childish. That's the reason distros exist. Puppy OS will be one of those options for "extremely poor" users.

I hope that programs like Android Studio, who depend on 32 bit libraries upgrade soon. Just today I had to install some 32 bit packages to get Android Studio working

This may yet be another turn off for many gamers to switch to Linux. Many titles developed during and prior to the seventh generation of consoles were 32-bit only due to their PowerPC architecture. The question will be how this effects WINE and Play On Linux. If legacy titles that many of us enjoy are simply not playable anymore, that may yet be another compelling reason for them to stay in the Windows ecosystem. As for everything else, 32-bit doesn't really make sense. Even most browsers these days at least have SOME form of 64-bit support (I think FireFox and Edge are the only remaining holdouts that don't have a mainstream 64-bit stable branch).

PAE Physical Address Extension which allows more RAM in 32bit is in some flavours of 32bit linux. PAE tables let you use plenty of RAM more than 4gb in Linux AND even in Windows. I've run 8Gb ram on 32bit Win7 using a patched kernel and it works. intel and other driver makers refused to make drivers allowing for the extra memory so it wasnt that workable without driver tweaks). The sad thing is 64 bit is a more protected operation mode- its less efficient than 32 bit.

I can see why people are getting upset over this. First of all X64 bit architecture is useful in many scenarios especially if you're using native 64bit apps but still majority of them are still 32bit, second: 64bit cpu can handle more ram than 4gb, that being said there is not difference unless you're using more than 4gigs, last is that people choose ubuntu because is relatively lightweight than their windows OS, they have very good support and easy to use. People also use 32bit ubuntu in vm because it requires slightly less ram, especially if you have low specs. But still change is necessary for future developments and I respect ubuntu's decision.

i dare say you are not qualified in any way, other than you have a superficial interest in linux, to say whether development is worth it, or to even grasp what is or is not involved in maintaining support at the kernel level for 32bit, is no where near an area you should be commenting on

32bit has been going away for a while now, Redhat did not release a 32bit install for RHEL7. Also there is the year 2038, which is when 32bit epoch time ends, so if 32bit systems continue to be supported a lot more systems will run into a more real Y2K type issue later. People had plenty of warning for the end of support of Windows XP, yet there are still large companies out there still running it. It takes along time to migrate all enterprise software to a new platform.

I would have to say. Time for 32bit to die. Really is no need for it if you no longer have any 32bit computers. Some old data centre that has not updated in 15 years may have issues.
