** IT IS PRICELESS !! ** To see and hear your family milking lineage. It makes me sad to see some family farms end because their kids understandably have no interest in working 18 hrs/day. It is noble work, but it takes an inane love for the animals, challenges, and creativity. Skills not everyone has. Thank you for sharing it with us.

If the new parlour lasts as long as this one it will be replaced in 2084 😳 and then you can tell everyone what it was like for you all when you were building it. You can say how quickly the cows learned the new milking routine and how one of the feeders nearly knocked you out when you were taking it down, I wonder if you will remember this time fondly or not. The history your family have in the farm is so lovely to hear, I really hope your Dad writes a book about the family farm and all the history that comes with it. Listening to your Dad, your Aunt, Uncle and 2nd cousin saying what it used to be like was so interesting, thank you all for sharing your memories. I apologise for such a long comment but it's amazing how much you are doing on the farm, I really hope the trouble you've had so far has left the road clear so the rest of the build goes without a hitch. Good luck for the next stage and I look forward to watching it happen. Love to you, Joanna, your Mum, Dad and all the team - and the cows xxxx

Awesome reminiscing session there, through the generations of Pembertons that have run your farm Tom, it’s lovely to hear. There aren’t many families that can work together like you do, it’s definitely not easy without coming to blows every now and again, I’ve loved seeing the relationship you have with your dad but to see Aunty and Uncle and cousins too with your stories and to see the building come down looking forward to the new parlour. Here's a tip for keeping moss/algae off your roof and out of your gutters that I learned from a professional roof maintenance company in Oregon (some areas of Oregon get more than 200" of rainfall annually): In the fall (before the rains start) dust the roof with baking soda. For a building that size you'll only need two passes per side - one at the ridge and one mid-way down (but you may want to add a third pass the first year to kill the build up). You can apply it like they did with a drop fertilizer spreader (not a broadcast spreader as it's so powdery it blows away). The rain will then help the baking soda spread across the remainder of the roof and into the gutters. The baking soda kills the moss root system and prevents it from regrowing. The first year you may have to power wash the loose moss off the roof in the spring. The first time I tried it was on a place that we had bought not too long after learning about this trick. It had a fully-shaded patio with a 2-3" mat of moss covering it. After trying to scrape it off with a spade and found it thoroughly stuck, I sprinkled the whole mat that fall and thought it hadn't worked as the moss looked the same by the following spring. When I stepped on that mat to get to the tool shed next to the patio, I about fell on my tuchus when the mat broke loose and slid out from under me. The root system that stuck the mat to the concrete like superglue had turned into a slick, black sludge. I got the spade out and scraped the whole patio off easy peasy then sprayed the sludge off with a garden hose.

Tom I'm glad that you're carrying on with with the dairy and raising cattle. For what i've heard from your dad and aunt and uncle there's quite a bit of history in the the milking room. That's really cool. Here in United States they either sale off their cows and walk away from the old dairies that they can't milk too many cows at a time. Or they build great big dairies to milk an outrageous amount of cows with 2 milking parlors and they milk 24/7 is what i've been told atleast when i took feed commodities to a couple of dairies in California.

I was 1 year old when you started milking in that milking parlor. I also grew up on a dairy farm. We milked our cows two on a side in an old milk house. We were milking about 120 cows or so in that milk house twice a day and it took between 8 and 9 hours a day. My brother and I had to start working on the farm at a very young age. I don’t know how my father managed to milk the cows, keep them fed, plant and harvest the crops and do everything else on the farm before we started helping him. We started out feeding the baby calves. The day that I graduated 3rd grade my father put me on a tractor by myself and told me to drive it around in the pasture until he came back. The next day I started plowing the fields. A couple of years later he started teaching me how to milk the cows. When the 3 of us were able to do the milking by ourselves we split the milking into 3rds. We were milking around the same number of cows. Dairy farming and farming in general is a hard and dangerous life but I enjoy it very much.
