Should've just stuck with collabing with established brands. Some of them (like Jeffree Star, tbh) know how to run a business before being a youtuber. While some of them are neither business savy, or famous enough to rely on just their influencer status to sell. We are so cluttered with influencers, it's not as special as it used to be. They mostly share the same followers too, and those people won't buy regularly from each guy they're subscribed to.

The problem with a lot of these brands is that they might go viral, they might be internet famous, or famous in the beauty community, but the brands don't stick. They need to become popular with the average consumer, people who don't know or don't care about the influencer behind the brand. They also need to be good at promotion and have other products relevant to the current market to make enough to support it, not just have one product constantly selling out while the others gather dust on the shelf. Last I heard tho, Item is still selling off their website. The brand still might find another home somewhere else to be available in stores.

I feel like some of the big reasons why influencer brands are starting to fall off is because mostly everyone already has their "go to" and it most likely is one of the very big companies like Neutrogena or NYX or elf. It could also be the fact that the title of "Influencer" is starting to really be looked down upon especially in the beauty world. Another reason could be of financial issues, influencer make a lot of money but maybe not enough to stabilize their brand or their end of the partner ship. Also, inflation

As someone who spent an absurd amount of money on makeup during the golden era of youtube beauty channels, I now have more eye shadow palettes and high lighters and lipsticks than 1 person could possibly use. The only time I even buy new makeup anymore is when I run out of something like foundation or mascara, and I usually just stick with my favorite products by trusted brands rather than trying something different. IMO, the makeup market was already pretty oversaturated before the pandemic, and COVID was the nail in the coffin for all these newer brands that showed up late to the party. The only influencer/celebrity owned makeup brands that I think will remain profitable long term are the brands that were already established and respected before 2020, like Fenty. Rare Beauty probably has a fighting chance too, since they developed a strong following before too many other celebrity brands jumped on the bandwagon and it seems like people still really love their products. But for the most part, I think it's a more financially safe decision for celebrities and influencers to go back to doing high-profile collaborations with beauty brands who already have a strong foothold in the industry, rather than starting their own brands.

I’m glad I have never been influenced by the so called influencers. None. Zero desire to buy their “hyped, viral, etc” brands. Drugstore brands are actually good & can be more effective for your skin. Just saying from my own personal experience. 🤷🏻♀️

Economically and Business Wise, these "influencers" brands would never last longer than 10 years.

This is ALL high end makeup. And it’s a combination of things, but I think the main factor is that drugstore makeup has closed the gap between high end and low end makeup! No one has to spend all their “coin” to look good anymore 😂 Y’all can blame Maybelline, Loreal, and Elf cuz they really did that shit 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

All this oversaturation of the market and I still can't find a product I've been looking for. All I've ever wanted was a Covergirl Outlast lipstain dupe! Since I haven't found that, I'm excited to see the market changing.

Lip stains aren’t that popular any more, so it’s understandable that you haven’t found a dupe. Right now glosses are popular, so you might find a gloss version out there.

Its really bad that some of these brands only have a life of 1 - 4 years. I wish they would just say it's like a capsule collection or collaboration with X brand, so that when it does fail or decline it wouldn't seem so bad.

Wait Is the inkey list really the “fast fashion” of skincare? What about The Ordinary? I’ve always been under the impression that they just provide basic skincare staples at affordable prices. I’ve used a few of the inkey list items and the ordinary (and finished the whole bottles/tubes) and LOVED them.
@Browndrea Жыл бұрын
I’m confused, too. Like…isn’t affordable skincare (which people use up way more and way quicker than makeup) a good thing?

@tiahnarodriguez3809 Жыл бұрын
Yes,lol. The Inkey List actually doesn’t have great reviews, and they create products around a trending ingredient to garner hype and attention. Their succinic acid treatment is an example of this. When succinic acid was trending people rushed to buy this treatment, but many found it to not be as good as salicylic acid or even made their acne worse. The Ordinary however, creates affordable products based on science. Their luxury brand Niod is the same, minus the cheap part. I don’t like The Ordinary’s products, but the do have better standing than the Inkey List.

As a 22 year old mom who has a rental with her boyfriend and roommate and kid , I can guarantee you the economy is a big part. People are not willing to spend money everytime an influencer dose their line, especially when you can't stock your house with groceries without spending between 200-275 dollars of food so everyone can eat. It's not feesable

Idk, I feel like influencers and celebs will just move onto a different market. I remember in the early 2000s when everyone had a perfume. Jessica Simpson had an entire line of perfumes and lotions that were supposed to be edible. Then celebs starting doing clothing collabs. Even Amanda Bynes had one at Steve & Barry’s and Miley Cyrus had one at Walmart. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is just the latest celebrity marketing trend and they all move on to something else in the next couple years

I've noticed the huge difference in long term value when it comes to genuine youtubers and their reviews, rather than influencers. I always find influencers cringe and somehow I don't trust anything they recommend, because I know it's either sponsored, or quick cash grab for them. But there are poeple I watch on youtube for years, and when they recommend some food, makeup or clothes I know I can rely on honest and good review.

For me personally, I've been turned off of high end brands, which includes a lot of influencer brands, because of the culture around them. Sephora employees are extremely rude to customers that do not fit in with their standards. I would rather spend my money on affordable brands that I know the quality of, and purchase them from a retailer that makes anyone feel welcome.

Small influencer brands were never meant to be long-term successful businesses, they were quick cash grabs. Their target customers are preteens/teens/YA and that's a somewhat fickle market to begin with bc as trends shift quickly this section of the market also tends to shift. Spot on that most of these influencer brands are simply overpriced drugstore makeup/products with their name slapped on it to begin with.

I think it's a mix of all three ideas. The pandemic really slowed things down and made the general public really rethink what we spend our money on. No doubt that had a huge impact on the beauty industry; no one really saw themselves spending fifty bucks on a tube of concealer that was less than half at the local dollar store. We were far more concerned with surviving a deadly disease. Plus, these influencers can only go so far before they crash and burn.

Kind of saw it coming in the case of Morphe. I worked for Pier 1 as my first job, and at that time the e-commerce side of retail and sales was just starting. My store was a flagship store for online sales and eCommerce business. We were told then that online shopping would be the way of the future and eventually we would no longer need nor have brick and mortar stores. Look where Pier 1 is now. You will never find a store anywhere anymore however you can still shop online from their website. So with Morpe opening a bunch of brick and mortar stores very quickly, seemed like a very risky business decision, especially when some of those stores were opening during the pandemic. As someone that works in retail, I know the companies that I worked for would not have survived if it was not for e-commerce sales. As far as influencer brands, it takes a lot to keep them running. All it takes is one bad word, and that's a wrap. And no company whether they're just starting out or not is going to want to support that bad press. Plus, who's going to want to spend hundreds of dollars on makeup when the price of eggs is skyrocketing through the roof???? I don't know, I'm just saying between inflation, the pandemic, and other influencer drama, some of these makeup lines were bound to just cease to exist.
