I stopped to avoid another car who was an absolute idiot and that was it just sank in soft sand. Dodge ram couldn't get me out but they had sat phone, called club 4x4 and they sent out offroad recovery immediately especially knowing we had a 1yo and 3yo in the car. Asked if we had supplies and if they need to organise emergency services to air drop supplies if it was life and death situation with kids in the car and being so hot. After we got back in town had a follow up call to see of there was anything else we needed and if the car was OK.

How hard can it be for the insurance person to Google 'Julia Creek' while talking to the customer. They might then get a better idea of the distances involved. Hi Mark Your video just popped up on my YT Normally I do not watch such videos but your accident video interested me. I could not figure out what was the reason for it and the drivers counteraction to control the tail swing. Yes, I have also a one axle van behind a Landcruiser and I know what is a tailswing by experience. For my understanding it is a easy to control it in an instand, less 2 sec. Or 2 swings befor it gets out of control or even the antisway system kicks in. May there are a number of different actions, but my best way todo is: Towpro break controller installed in the car. Set to Automatik on the road. (Set to manual on dirt roads an WDing) In Automatik mode turn the knob up to 10 highest setting Test drive every time start driving if the van break function accurately. (My way of checking) When you experience a tail swing or wiggle you call it, hit the tow pro button in an instand to activate the van breaks with all force they got. Release the button, re-apply if necessary your butt is the sensor for it to make that decision! This should straighten the rig and neutralize tail swing. Not sure what electric trailer brake system you have installed, but in my opinion all system should have a button for manual override. PS. Yes maybe I have old experience from truck driving in Sweden where in former time the manual trailer brake lever under the steering wheel was a live saver going down ice roads with a fully loaded trailer is pushing the prime mover. Schock-Hit the trailer bracketing straighten the rig. It worked for many of the truck driver as live safer. Now with ABS not sure… The best testing strip in my opinion is the little hill into Adelaide or out of Adelaide 10 km downhill with little gradience. Drive downhill, accelerate go of the trottle and let the van push you car. If it starts a tailswing hit to tow pro button for 1-2 seconds and streighten the rig. By all means this is my way and experience to get out off such a situation and for sure I am not an instructor nor driving trainer but with decades of experience driving all sort of vehicles except road trains in Australia which are a much different ball game. Good luck and safe drive with your new rig D Max and single axle van. Cheers

@@markandshirley Watch the Bernoulli Effect where two slab sided vehicles pass one another... even going in the same direction. The build up of air pressure between the two slab sides creates a pressure...as the lighter vehicle draws ahead the tail of the lighter vehicle gets flicked by leaving the pressure zone. You have 3 seconds before you crash...unless, as above, you have a manual big red button to slam on the trailer brakes..as above...to pull the rig straight. You can't accelerate out of it..and the more you accelerate the more energy goes into the crash. Brake ONLY the van....

Sorry to hear about your crash. One thing that more people could be doing but don't, is have 2 or more vehicles. There are a lot of good utes from about 2015 to 2020 with medium Ks for around 20k. Spend 30k + and you can get your 4x4 dual cab main car. Nothing wrong with a 2016 single cab with 2wd with a tow bar, break controler and 1k kings roof top tent parked on a safe street in north shore if things go wrong. Could be around 60k easy for both or much less. Even a 2010 dmax or colorado with the 3.0l as a spare. People always want the 80k + Rangers or Landcruisers when for 80k you could do 3 vehicles or 2 for 60k. Another lifesaver are box trailers. Have one parked on the street with a cage and big tool box. Cost around 5k. Enclose the top with a cage section. Great for storage.

You start off by saying the insurance companies were great I was wondering who was at fault for the accident, did you have the weight in the camper wrong , did you swerve, blow out ?? I m not sure how old your land cruiser was but and what cover you had , example. if you had it insured for $80000 and they paid out $80000 less excess then that's ok if you spend $120000 insurance company's fault you spent more Everything depreciates Same with camper van If you have an agreed value that's different As for leaving your gear unattended You are relying on people being honest. Locks are to keep honest people out. Probably should of hired a truck to pick it all up in the first place before the vultures got to it You are very lucky you got to complain instead of being dead or badly injured or ending up in a wheel chair Sorry for your accident , but insurance companies are loss adjusters the trick is to have enough cover and the correct cover.

this is just our experience, i am sure you will do something different if ever in a similar scenario. vehicles were both underweight, the road induced a swerve and in this case we were unable to correct it. bad luck , good luck, this is just the way it played out.

Just to clarify, it was a crash, not an accident. Totally preventable. Excessive speed no doubt a contributing factor. Insurance companies should not have to pay for the stupidity of people who think they are driving a Kenworth until the laws of Physics take over.

Caravan?? No idea. If the new one is better great. Replacing a Toyota though with a D Max is a big step backwards. Though IF the vehicle was underinsured that is your issue not theirs. The more KM you do the more you will realise this. Isuzu make a decent car for the price, Toyota make a better on for more price
@markandshirley21 күн бұрын
@@ldnwholesale8552 never said the car was underinsured. But starting over often costs more. My dmax was 50k, but the top spec ones go for over 90k. Same motor and drive train. The 76 series still needed more spent on it to get it up to where the dmax is on some things

Budget Direct are cheap for a reason! Personally, I would NEVER consider insurance with them, and that's before watching this video. All those "awards" they keep spruiking about are simply because they are cheap and it's easy to get insurance with them; ease of claims is not considered. I think they are a bunch of cowboys.

@TheDarkSnaffle i agree up to a point, after all they did pay us out after 5 weeks of mucking around

sounds like the the weight distribution in the caravan was incorrect. Lucky to get insurance payout. I'd be careful you are not sued by the insurance company for defamation.

it was all weighed professionally before we left sydney, weights were all well within limits. no deamation if you are sticking with the agreed facts
@rodneyflying912427 күн бұрын
@@markandshirley the accident did not happen in Sydney when it was weighed and from your account of the caravan getting the wiggles prior to the accident points to weight distribution inside the caravan. I see it all the time in the outback. I'm a truck driver..

My only question would be, if you were dumb enough to replace the caravan with another single axle caravan, so that it too can be the tail wagging the dog & cause the same outcome a second time? 🤷♂️
