Good review. One point : The Avengers didn't kill Wanda's kids (who may have also come back since--sigh). The Vision, who had once masterminded a 'for their own good' scheme to take over the world, was later captured by a combined intelligence force and stripped down so he couldn't anymore, then reassembled absent his memories and the emotional attachments to them (Byrne was on a kick to BRUTALLY tear down everything Steve Engelhart did in his run on West Coast Avengers). Wanda, whose was being manipulated into a power escalation by Immortus, started losing it, and her kids started simply winking out of existence, implied to be the emotional distress of their Mom combined with the emotions and memory attachment of their Dad (which also came back later--yeah) not being there anymore. See, they never said the twins weren't magical - they always were. Wanda one time wielded a whole lot of magical power someone was trying to use for evil, and Agatha (who was supposed to be dead, but then wasn't, but who died here, but...ya know) suggested wielding it for her own purposes, which became the babies. BTW, who delivered said babies? Doctor Strange, though it was later called into question whether this was just another of Wanda's projections, since he had also said earlier that there was no problem with how they were conceived, and has spoken many times of chaos magic being for real. A tangent : Some say Wanda may have been infected with the hardcore, madness-making chaos magic during Avengers/JLA, when she was wielding it in the DCU. Anyhoo, they begin to wink out, not-dead-Agatha shows up and explains that their existence was never the cut-and-dry thing Wanda told them, only to have minor WCA baddie Master Pandemonium show up, claiming that his soul quest ended with finding the twins, which he claimed were the missing pieces of his soul, but they weren't, because he implodes and then Mephisto shows up to say the magic was once part of him until Franklin Richards temporarily killed him. These explanations were not some of Byrne's finest work : Master Pandemonium was supposed to have been on his quest many years before Wanda conceived, and the magic she used was from Agatha's corrupted people in New Salem, not Mephisto. But eh. BTW, before MP implodes, we are treated to a loverly scene of his hands being replaced by the twin babies bodies on each arm, wailing in agony. Byrne and babies - not good. After all this, Wanda was treated to have the memories wiped, but this didn't really take. Her own denial from the raw grief did most of that till Immortus made his move, corrupting her during which event she clearly did remember and wanting revenge for that among other reasons. Subsequent Wanda appearances were all over the map on whether she remembered or not, with most seeming to say it was a pain she was dealing with, but preferred not to speak of. One short in an annual had her open a portal to a world where Vision was never remade, the kids were alright and she took comfort that such a place even existed. Sorry to go long, but the last thing I'll mention is Tony's firing. The Avengers' production staff at this time had trouble with understanding the POTUS Cabinet. Tony was in as SOD because the prior one had been Dell Rusk - aka The Red Skull. That one has a page of problems all its own, summed up thusly : Even a villain with the Skull's cleverness and resources would find it way hard to get into that position, if not impossible. As to Tony, it must have been part of Scarlet Witch's magic that got him fired that same day, because scandals worse than his have POTUS's hanging on to their most minor officials for weeks at minimum.

See, the reason I like the old Avengers (pre-disassembled) better than the new, because the old Avengers had characters you didn't get to see in other books, like the vision and the scarlet witch and hawkeye. The new avengers have people like spiderman and wolverine, both of whom you can read about in 5 other books.

Same with Runaways. They disbanded sometime after Avengers Arena back in 2012 and reunited last year in November ... and they say only 2 years have passed from the characters perspective. 2 years. The Inhumans, the time displaced X-Men, Secret Wars, Civil War 2 all happened in the span of two years ... That's just insane.

I don't mind that comics exist in a timeline where people seem to just age super slowly and I don't mind that the past is changed to fit the modern stories (like which war Flash Thompson fought in). I don't like his writing style. Everyone speaks in the same voice. Characterizations are horrible. He writes people like he wants to without regard to how other writers including their creaters have characterized them. His storytelling is bad. He'll have a pretty good idea soemtimes but then he drags it out needlessly and ruins it with sloppy execution. His huge ego doesn't help matters.

Byrne and Bendis wrote some of the most poisonous misogynistic drivel ever to have (dis)graced comics. Bendis uses almost every character assassination trope against Wanda, and misses the whole point of her character.

For me the worst part is Bendis thinking "How can I reveal the truth about the babies...Hey women can't keep their mouths shut or keep a secret. Done whats for lunch?"
