I don't know how intentional this is (it could probably go either way tbh), but I think the fact that the "finale" is super sappy and cliche only for it to be broken by Bart rebelling against the empty sentimentality harkens back to the root of The Simpsons; a cynical anti-sitcom created to rebel against how clean-cut and overly idealized TV families were in the 80s. In any case, I love that the AI makes them go through all the hacky tropes of series finales, then the show's real spirit breaks through and the episode ends with them going "Yeah... No."
@foxmountain80653 ай бұрын
I'm going with it's intentional, Conan is their most famous writer from the golden age I'm sure he would agree with this take.

My favourite joke in this episode is the implication that FOX executives had been trying to murder Homer for nearly half the show’s run. It really adds a new layer to the surge in action sequences during the Scully years. Some purists can now picture him dangling from the hot air balloon, or the family on that volcano in Japan, rewrite history in their mind so they end in gore, and that can be their cut-off point. But my favourite scene is Bart getting the AI to break its hold over Homer. There’s a lot of ways to read it. I commented on Johnny2Cellos’ video that an ending like that could’ve been planned at any point in the show’s history. It’s a proud rejection of the sappy sitcom writing The Simpsons was originally designed to criticise. Homer shouldn’t be this perfectly developed character with his whole life sorted out…and that’s why everyone laughs at him.

The past few seasons have been such a breath of fresh air, I love how experimental they have been recently and I think a big part of that is Matt Selman becoming co-showrunner and because of that we get episodes like this and it's fantastic to see! I do truly believe we are in a Simpsons renaissance, maybe not on the level of the golden era (and I don't think it'll ever be) but certainly a massive improvement over the middle seasons and is making a good case for the show to continue!

Amazing how a new showrunner can inject new life into a show after being stuck with Al Jean for too long. It's the equivalent of Batman having a writer that worked from Golden Age to Silver Age.

But on Amazon Prime Video, you have to buy the episodes/seasons instead of it being included on a streaming service (no option to rent), and each season is artificially split in two so you have to buy half-seasons at full price and Amazon gets more money. Doesn't help that each "season" is about 20$ each for the HD versions and there's no option to rent it. Even if you buy the SD version of every season (around 13$ each), it will cost upwards of $80 for the whole series. Yesterday it only cost $8 a month for the entirety of OK KO on Hulu in HD (plus all the other shows, but with ads), and now it's off the service. There is simply no easily accessible way to watch the series legally anymore. Which is a shame since it's one of my favorite shows.

I feel like a self aware episode about the floating continuity of the show and how weird it would be if the show got a formal ending would've worked better had it not be done by the simpsons. like if this was a fan creation of Bart attempting to right the world back into a plain, stable state, it could be much more interesting
@mathieuleader86013 ай бұрын

@MarcusFigueras3 ай бұрын
Also, your OK:KO comparison actually points out my issue with why it doesn't work contextually with the Simpsons; with OK:KO, it works in the context of the show getting its episode number cut because we accept they just didn't have time to do certain plots, ala that one line in The Owl House. They're mostly plotlines we know COULD'VE happened but didn't have time to cook with, and we accept we only see bits and bobs of them. With the Simpsons, the self awareness of how these conclusions make no sense in the context of the show continuing doesn't alleviate how we know it wouldn't happen. It's a mild chuckle before we realize again the show REALLY isn't going to end soon.

Yeah, this is honestly one of the best episodes The Simpsons has gotten in a while. It shows that while it's unlikely the show will ever truly end, they are aware of how many people want the series to conclude and chose to explore what a potential series finale would be like while lampooning the unfortunate trend of AI being chosen over human writers. And now I'm curious as to how the show could possibly end for real... not that it'd ever happen, realistically speaking. They really meant it when they said that they've got stories for years.

Putting so many ideas of a possible series finale out before actual series finale makes you wonder: what do they actually have _left_ for the series finale? They can't do Bart's 11th birthday anymore because they decided to do it now, the secret about Marge's hair hiding her rabbit ears can only work for a non-canon/Treehouse of Horror episode, they already had a "finale"-worthy episode with _Holidays of Future Passed,_ where now should they go with it all?
