The End of The World

Many people think that Christ is delayed in returning, and not much was different at the time of the early Church. Many were expecting the end of the world and the return of Christ to come within years of his death. But the decades passed and he did not return.

St. Faustina is the one who selected by Jesus to prepare us before his second coming. Prophesies from many approved apparitions indicate that we are in the end times. The signs of the times are matching with the verses in Bible and the prophesies of the approved apparitions ( eg: our lady of good success, our lady of Akita). But we are not supposed to calculate the exact time, instead to be alert and prepare for his second coming. And it is sure that we have to undergo through great tribulations and the rule of Antichrist before our lord's return.

We don't really need St. Faustina and other apparitions to tell us to prepare for the second coming by observing the signs of the times, ALL of that is contained in Scripture alone. If you look at Scripture by itself, anyone can see we are living in the last days because of what state humanity has found itself in. There is no way we can predict a certain day, month, or year when the Lord will return, as you said, but being alert to the events of the times tell us that we are not only getting closer to the end, but we may well be living in the final days.

The "new heavens" is referring to the fact that this world has been ruled over by spiritual wickedness in heavenly places. In the book of Revelation, Satan and the angels are thrown down and the saints of God are established above them. Therefore, the new earth shall be ruled over by heavens governed by the Father's will.

Dr. Pitre I love your shows but have a question on Parousia . It seems original Greek meaning, was like a king being nearby or present. I believe the Real Presence (parousea) came on the rode to Emmaus when they recognize Jesus,in the breaking of bread. They actually added the meaning of a second coming to the Greek language centuries later. It seems so many places especially Revelation are mixed up on end of the world passages and The Real Presence of Jesus coming to us in the Eucharist. Also the End of the World and the End of sacrificing animals and Juda religion as they new it after destruction of the temple in Jerusalem in 70AD

4:07 Yes the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s passed without "heaven and earth" going under. But AD 70 it happened, the old heaven and its angels (the Jewish priesthood) was replaced by the new heaven and its angels (the Christian priesthood) and the old earth (the Jewish people of God) was replaced by the new earth (the Christian people of God)

Matthew16:28 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.” Some interpret this to mean the transfiguration which happened several days after Christ told this to his disciples, it was a foretaste as it were of Christ's second coming. The two Old Testament figures who appeared to Christ and to the disciples are important. Moses who prophesied about Christ(Deuteronomy18:15), and who died(Deuteronomy34:5), shows that the dead will be resurrected at the second coming of Christ(Daniel12:2). Elijah appeared because the Jews understood that Elijah would come before the coming of their Moshiach(Malachi4:5-6). The disciples even question Christ about Elijah in some of the gospel accounts after the transfiguration. There are other explanations I believe that say Christ was referring to the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Some might say that the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost and not Christ, but what does Christ say to Phillip when Phillip asks Christ to show them the Father in the gospel of John; John14:9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

I'm not sure if Jesus was referring to the Transfiguration. Jesus said "there are some standing here" which I interpret to mean that some may have died prior to Jesus coming in His kingdom (however that is defined), but there is no indication that any of the Twelve (other than Judas) died before the Ascension, or even Pentecost. Could Judas be the "one" that saw death before these events, whereas the rest of the Twelve died afterwards. It's a difficult passage for sure.

@@jzak5723 - That's a good question John, but remember only three of the disciples witnessed the transfiguration, Peter, James and John. So many of the others disciples would have indeed died before they seen the glorified Christ. So it seems that Christ's statement to the disciples in Matthew16:28 was to indicate that only some of them would be privy to the vision of the transfiguration whilst the others would not(in their lifetime).

Dr. Pitre, will it be ok to say that probably that specific coming from St.John did happen when the Holy Spirit came into them? after all The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit is One. If the Holy Spirit came to them, can it be said that our Lord Jesus did came since they are one. Not in corporal form but in the Holy Spirit. I will reference the dialog of St. Catherine of Sienna.

I don't think its absolutely important to know whether it is literal or figurative, just that God will renew the heavens and earth in some way, all we need to do personally is be alert and ready for it to take place at any time

@@jzak5723 i disagree with you on that one. Although it may not be as important as being alert and repentant, i think it still has its own importance. Since we are the one waiting and should be looking for these signs, since it will change our lives, and since we have to endure and some may sacrifice or even die before the coming of that day, then it would be great or helpful to know whether this is figurative or not according to Church teaching. Just my own opinion on the matter. It may be important for me but not for others.

@@jzak5723 actually not. My question is sincere and i would like to know whether those are figurative or not. My disagreement was in consideration of the possibility that if they are not figurative, then we have physically very difficult times ahead of us that is going to test us. Maybe even events that could go against what science can explain. I mainly focused on that possibility because if it is figurative only, then we don't have to worry about such "apocalyptic" events that could harm our loved ones. If it is figurative then we just have to focus on our spiritual trials and purifications, not worry about our children having to die by the sword or suffer from a plague of divine punishment that goes before the end of time. As you may know, these things were not figurative in the old testament. When Moses or God sent a plague or punishment, it was not some sort of figurative one open to people's interpretation. So far, I've never heard from the Church about this matter. It is unclear. Which is quite strange especially that it is the foundation and pillar of truth. That is why I asked.

As John Smith said so eloquently... I agree with that to a point. But to me Christ seemed to be more literal! And there many other quotes that would lead you to believe the same... like when he said you will not have gone over all the mountains and the towns in Judea before I have come? Also... the famous quotation this generation shall not pass until all these things be speaking to those group of people meaning all these things shall happen before the last man has died! Just remember all the apostles were dead before the temple fell in ad 70 including the Apostle John that wrote revelation I know there is question about that but it's very possible! And as Jesus discussed this generation most people would agree there different interpretations of the generation timelines but 40 years is usually the right interpretation. So from the time Christ spoke these words till the time the temple fell to the Romans was within that 40 year period... just a side note Christ also said the law and the prophets were until John meaning John the Baptist! Which in my mind means every prophecy everything ever spoken that led up to Christ and to the end stopped with Christ's generation everything that happens after that is pure coincidence or bad interpretation... what are your thoughts on anything I have said or what is John Smith's thoughts thank you very much:)
