Alien: Covenant is the most recent installment in the Alien series, and while it was pretty well-received by fans of the franchise, there are still some questions people had about the ending.
Some of the character decisions didn’t quite make sense to some audience members, and others wondered how everything ties into the mythology. Also, since David would live for an undetermined length of time (but was projected to be in the thousands of years) it was only a matter of time before more humans came, especially with Dr. Shaw's interstellar message designed to attract human attention specifically being broadcast on an endless loop.

After waiting 3 years for a follow up to "Prometheus"; and maybe some information about the "Engineers" and what they were doing; we instead get "nasty insane robot kills everybody and takes over spaceship". And I've seen that movie before. - It's probably a trillion $ mission; but lets put together a crew who don't follow procedure designed to stopped them from getting killed. - Lets change course because we get a vague signal. - A colony ship with only one lander. (Ok, so I take it the plan was to land the whole ship, but seriously). - Lets fire our weapon inside said lander shooting at anything and everything. What could possibly go wrong? - Lets wander about on an alien planet without spacesuits on, because the biosphere couldn't possibly contain anything nasty. - Lets all separate at various times so we can get picked off one by one. - We have two robots that look exactly the same. There's no need to check that the insane one switched places with the sane one; until after its too late. (Anyone watching the film NOT see that coming a parsec away). - The "Engineers" have only one city, on their planet, a planet they call "Paradise", even though it's covered by massive storms. (That's if this was the "Engineers" actually home world, and not an out post). - The "Engineers" allow one of their own ships to land without bothering to check who or what is on board; "hello, who's that and whats the landing code?"; and their entire civilization gets destroyed as a result. Brilliant. Sorry; but the film comes across as Ridley Scott trying to make a film based on ALL the complaints made by "fans" about a lack of "aliens" in "Prometheus". Right down to putting "Alien" in the title. The result feels like a mishmash of the film he really wanted to make and a studio ordered recycling of bits from previous "Alien" films. "We escaped by flying away in a jump ship". "An alien somehow got on board". "Lets trick it into an airlock and blow it into space".

I agree. Enjoyed the mystique of the movie, but thought they abandoned the questions of Prometheus for just... More questions. Also, this crew was full of some of the dumbest characters in a sci fi horror flick, like when a chick with infected blood on her face locks another in room with an Alien... So the infection wouldn't spread... And then Shaw's decision to rebuild David... DEAR GOD WHY?!! The atmosphere is why I come to Alien movies; the humans in them are dumb cattle with no sensible survival instinct.

Valarze That planet has no animals just plants,I think these are other creations that they were gonna test something on,that's why you only see plant life since the goo can't effect it. Species capable of space travel can't have a homeworld so clean as that one,David learned the ways of the engineers and realised he has no chance on taking on the big guys,so he made a "detour" and came to a test planet instead,he tricked Shaw to use her as a material for creating the protomorph.

I keep hearing all this bad reaction when Alien VS Predator is brought up, and I just have to ask... why? I absolutely adored the Alien VS Predator series. Especially the one with the pyramid under the arctic where eventually humans and predator team up. They used the original ideas from Alien to justify the Pyramid and how it functions for the Predator purposes. It also makes a lot of sense that they'd keep coming back to deal with outbreaks since the Predators seem to want to make sure species aren't wiped out just because they like hunting them. It's really strange to me that people hold Aliens on a pedestal, but can't stand the Alien vs Predator story.

Those engineers looked more human that the ones in prometheus as well and it seems they were surprised to see another ship arrive when it did. Those are great theories about why David helped Daniels and Tennessee I was sort of thinking the same thing. It's funny when I went to see this movie I went into it being on Team David hoping he would prevail but after act 1 of the film I liked Walter and wanted him to ultimately to live or be the winner. The ending was delightfully twisted and dark and gave me a very dreadful feeling of unease wondering what he was going to do to Daniels and Tennessee not to mention the rest of the colonists. I hope this movie makes enough money to warrant a sequel.

Jeffrey Schools I just saw Davids actions as the "long-con" vs the short one. Does he really want a murder machine running around the ship killing all his potential experiments? Also, he took the safe win-win route. The route he took, if the Alien happened to survive, it is a win, if the crew members survive it is a win so he can put them to sleep. The other way was a win-lose route, if the humans survived his cover is blown and it puts himself in danger. And lastly, the alien did snap at him through the monitor.

the reason why David launches the goo is because he wants to create his own life. It's actually pretty obvious. In Prometheus, David has a conversation with Shaw's boyfriend (I forget his name). During this convo, Shaw's boyfriend talks about how David was made by humans just because they could. And this made David angry (remember, the synthetic model David is has the ability to feel emotion). Let's put this in perspective. What if your mom told you you were born just because it was possible. Wouldn't you get mad or even vengeful? So, he put the goo in the guys drink, testing out what it could possibly do. Later, in Covenant, David talked about how since he is synthetic, he couldn't biologically create life, but, he said he could use science. So he unleashed the goo on the Engineers. I think Davids whole mindset is that he just wants to make life, and since he biologically can't, he uses the people around him to make it for him! This is why I freaking love Prometheus. It brings philosophy and depth into a very simple, yet amazing franchise. And David's character brings such a deep and impactful meaning that is actually ingenious.

Conclusion, the path taken with Prometheus was much darker in tone, much more mysterious if you'd ask me. Although far from perfect the ideas in that movie stretches far beyond our imagination and beyond where we are now. We just don't realize it. In 100 years we've got Prometheus 2. Enough already with the Alien sequels prequels which include covenant.

I didn't think the movie was that good but here are my thoughts on some of your questions: 1) Why did David help them kill the Xenomorph? I think you're partially correct, but I also think David's main goal was to infect the entire ship, not kill them all with the Xenomorph. 2) Who is mother? You seem to have missed that Mother is the name of the computer from the ship, as well. I thought that's what he meant by Mother. To infect everyone on the ship. He didn't say "their Mother" he just said "Mother." In the end, despite the movie not being very good, I think Covenant and Prometheus raise more questions than answer, and a lot of it doesn't really make a lot of sense, both in terms of plot and the actions of the characters.

the movie wasn't bad but was so predictable, the worst crew of underquailified morons with one job to go to a pre scanned planet leaves course and then they suddenly become useless when faced with smalls problem they can't handle like normal people. Before you know it only two people survive. the only excuse these people really had was that they were very emotional but literal these people are so fuckin trash at their job it pissed me off. But these kinda of characters only exist in horror so I guess you can't blame ridely Scott. I mean there has to be a shower sex scene in all alien flick or else there would be no a good reason to kill a lovely couple after they just found out 11 of their friends had been massacred literally that same afternoon.

I agree with both of you. This was more tolerable than Prometheus in my opinion, but that could have been because I saw this one in a 4dx theater. I just don't understand how both crews have no self-preservation instincts. We're on an alien planet we haven't picked up on our scans; let's go explore with no protective gear whatsoever. Also, lets split up while we're at it. After all, I don't hear any birds chirping on this ALIEN PLANET, so we don't need to worry about any possible life forms or predators, specifically. DERP!!!!! We take more precautions in areas on our OWN planet, let alone an alien one. I have a hard time caring about supposedly-intelligent scientists who behave so moronically. I'm fairly sure the waiting for Mother line is David knowing the OS of the ship is called Mother and was aware of colonisation missions and he knew sending out the signal of Shaw would attract a ship, maybe even a colonisation ship and he would be able to use it to create thousands of Xenomorphs. So what he meant is he is waiting on Mother so he can operate the OS and control all the colonists in their pods for experiments

Rather than a reboot, I think it's worthwhile to see the events of Hadley's Hope play out prior to the arrival of the marines. Kind of like The Thing exploring what happened at the Norwegian camp prior to the events of the John Carpenter version. I think it would also be interesting to see the events of the planet on Pitch Black while the miners were there at the previous eclipse.

People read way too much into this film. If something's unanswered, it's more likely than not because Ridley doesn't have one. Covenant was a shallow film that was solely designed to reel back the fans in with familiar Alien tropes. It's laughable to see people trying to ascribe some kind of depth to it. It's about as deep as a layer of sweat.

In this movie they just kill them off and their is no back story. We never find out why did wanted to kill man kind, who are they,why they created man kind. Nothing. Hank Mccoy I always felt that the xenomorphs had been created as a sort of biological weapon/supersoldier in an interstellar war between 2 species/factions. the brilliance of using the bodies as incubators for more soldiers that would effectively infiltrate the opposition and then destroy them from within is diabolical to say the least. unfortunately, the engineers' creation was uncontrollable and ended up wiping out the opposition as well as most of their creators. humans just stumbled upon them in the original Alien movie and kind of spread the disease further so to speak. always thought it would have been cool to see a prequel actually showing the struggle/war that ended up being the basis for the creation of xenomorphs and then seeing the 2 sides then systematically get wiped out by the xenomorphs, with the closing scene being the ship found at the beginning of Alien drifting in space after a huge final massacre on board. Don't know how I feel about the android/human involvement in the xenomorphs creation but I guess it doesn't completely suck.

i didnt read through all the other comments so i dont know if anyone already said this but im sure David said Mother referring to the operating system on the ship from alien, aliens and and covenant. I believe David is say that he is waiting for mother because all the synthetics are able to patch into mother remotely once within range via the wireless modem. Once David had a ship where he was connected to "Mother" he could go on with his plans... also im sure that David sent on purpose the transmission that the covenant crew received causing them to go to planet 4 because he new that eventually someone would intersect the transmission regardless of how long it took cause he would never die as stated over and over throughout the two films.

Reason why David helped Daniels and Tennessee at the end, is because he was testing the resilience of his creation. I think he was amused by the cat and mouse game, curious about what his alien would do next. He wanted to find out if he truly did create the perfect unstoppable organism. When the alien gets killed, he shows strong disappointment and has to start all over again to make his alien even better. Another reason could be that he wanted to maintain his cover for as long as Daniels and Tennessee posed a threat; they did carry guns after all and could have killed the alien even if David had locked it with D and T in a corrider for example. His alien would be dead, and they'd know that Walter is actually David.

If anyone can remember in Alien 4, when Wynonna Ryder was outed as an android that was supposed to be extinct. In that sequel, the Humans exterminated all of them. I wonder if that was any link to Weyland/Yutani and military discovering David's experiments and intentions? David helped Daniels defeat the xenomorph because he didn't need it. He was already on the ship with the facehugger embryos so once Daniels and Kenny Powers were asleep he could get to work experimenting with the rest of the crew.

In the final scene, I think David was getting along just trying to see if he's creation (Xenomorph) was actually the capable monster he planed all along or if Daniels and Tenessee could still be "superior". That failed so now he will perfect he's creation while everyones's in cryosleep.

I think David helped Daniels and Tennessee at the end because he wanted to see what his creation was capable of. To me it seems he was dissappointed when Daniels defeated it (twice). Like an engineer doing a field test, making notes of flaws and weaknesses in his designs so he can improve upon it later.

The mural in Prometheus isnt the Alien queen. Its what one group of Engineers attempts (but fails) to become. The movies are a loose retelling of the Book of Enoch with elements of Greek and Sumerian mythology sprinkled in. David (who represents the philosopher David Hume) plays the same role as Satan (who like Lawrence of Arabia leads a rebelion) Elizabeth Shaw is a reference to the time traveling scientist in Dr. Who. Shaw and David are going back in time in each movie. We will find out David created the xenomorph. Probably will turn out that the engineers are just an advanced form of AI like David.

When david says "they are waiting for mother" he is referring to the orbiting ship, the on board computer is called mother, just like all alien film ships. At the end of the film, they are on board and with mother, awaiting to colonise the next planet. This is also why david helped them to kill the alien. I dont know why ppl find these films so hard to understand, maybe because they are actually very simple but ppl try and read too much into things nowadays??
