I live in a poor mountainous area of Vietnam.
From a young age, I had to work hard to help my parents.

Lime powder by itself doesn’t actually work against bacteria you need to mix it with water then spray or paint with the limewash. As for your chicken issue you might want to start building an actual enclosure for them as well as selling some of them to knock down their numbers as if they’re beginning to peck at your garden it means that they’re hungry and if they’re hungry it means that not everyone is getting enough to eat.

Lime works evne when dry cause moisture is everywhere. But I doubt it's going to work against virus. Viruses transmitted by live animals, not by foot on earth.

1) Pig pens should only house 1 pig per pen to prevent the spread of infection, which means more pig pens will need to be built. 2) A feeder for the chickens which they can eat from whenever they wish, to discourage them from going to the farm. 3) A tall brick, wood, or bamboo fence surrounding the entire farm to prevent unwanted animals or pests from entering and destroying the crops. Now is the biggest opportunity to learn as much as possible about what happened, and how to prevent things like it from happening again.

Duong you took good care of the pigs and you could not stop diseases from getting to them. There are shots a vet could give that would stop some disease but nothing stops all diseases. I really am sorry you lost all the pigs and piglets. Please don't give up and try again. I have watched you since you first built the bamboo jut and started your first rice paddy when the bamboo hut caught fire you built a better home and them turned the rice paddy into a pond for your fish. The fish and chickens are thriving under you care and if you get more pigs I am sure you will get them to thrive as well. what's the old saying if at first you don't succeed try try again. So sad to hear what happened to the pigs. Im sure you have done your best to take care of them and tried your best to keep them alive but the epidemic is just too much. It's not only in Vietnam that they have it. I watched vloggers in my native Philippines and they had the same problem. Don't worry you still have the chickens and the fish to look after. Losing the pigs to such a terrible disease is devastating and we all know how you lovingly cared for them. They were so sweet. I have read where scientists are working on treatments and vaccines so hopefully there will soon be a cure and you will be able to raise a new litter of piglets. Just not now. Duong, there's always, always a better day just beyond our sight at the moment of our despair. On a brighter note, it looks like its time to harvest and preserve a boatload of fish! Talk about an achievement! The pond you've built and the care you have put into raising fish is astounding! And grow a bunch of Oregano for your chickens. It helps keep them healthy. Chickens are curious. Maybe you can find a way to hang a cabbage so they can peck at it. Keeping them interested in something might help keep them out of your garden,...though that's no guarantee. I pray comfort for you in your loss and may showers of blessings fill you with joy.

Hi Duong. I am sorry for the loss of your pigs. It is like losing members of your family. It is good to be kind to yourself by cooking a very tasty meal. It builds up your body....but more than that it shows you the things you are doing that are thriving well on your farm. even the dying vegetables can help your fish to thrive. And the chicken was punished for destroying the garden. So there is Karma in the world. Perhaps if you plant a banana tree over the pigs grave you will grow the biggest bananas in the market. I hope so. I often watch your channel and admire your hard work and all of the very creative things you have built. You are very fortunate to have a farm where so many raw materials are close by. The running water, good fertile soil, the sand and rocks, the timber and the bamboo. What a marveloius resource bamboo is. It is a joy to watch how you select each tree to cut down according to the specific use to which you are putting it. And the use of your machete is highly skillful. Not once have I seen you cut yourself. You inspire me with my little projects as you inspire thousands of others around the world. You have fought many long battles and had many victories. I’ve raised poultry and unfortunately suffered many chickens dying under my care. It can be very difficult to manage disease with animals. I often use to feel at fault for the chickens dying. So sorry for the sad, sad loss of all your pigs Duong! 😭 I know a LOT of hard earned money, time, effort, love and care went into raising them so to see them all succumb to swine fever is a REALLY sad thing my friend! 😢 I would suggest, that if your chickens are damaging your garden however that you build a really large aviary (like a bird cage) one that is big enough to still have the chicken coup inside AND give them enough room to roam around freely?! That way, they are NOT caged chickens, they are STILL free range (able to roam around and be free) but they cannot get near your garden to ruin your crops?! 🤔

I'm so sorry that you've suffered such a loss. I know that you cared for the pigs greatly and did your best to prevent this problem. Maybe you could switch to raising goat's as they're less susceptible to swine flu than pigs, plus there's the added benefit of goat's milk. Also, maybe if you built a fence around the garden with a woven bamboo roof that might keep the chickens out. The bamboo roof couldn't be woven too tightly, of course, because of the garden's need for sunlight.

I’m so sorry about your pigs Duong. I know they meant a lot to you. African Swine Flu is deadly. There are many ways it can be carried to pigs, several out of our control. I am curious if other pig farmers in your area also lost pigs to this disease? So sorry again. At this point, do some research and learn as much as you can. A good farmer does not let failures stop him. Its ok to mourn your losses but do not let it stop you. This is just a step back or two. Move on and focus your attention on other areas of your farm that is doing well and on things that need your attention. You have made a great resource discovery in your small river! Is that a river, stream or creek?! Lol The copper you mined, processed and made that wonderful little bowl with was amazing! Look how much you learn in that little adventure! : ) I hope to see you mining more copper and casting more beautiful things! : ) You have a wealth of amazing talents and skills, truly very impressive for a young man your age! Look what all you have accomplished! Your farm has an wonderful amount of potential as a very productive farm. If you can’t have pigs, or at least not for now, thats ok. I know you try do do everything in the primitive ways and we all appreciate that but sometimes it is good to call the Animal Doctor to visit the farm. If the Animal Doctor visit it could help to identify the problem maybe even give medicine to heal the animals [next time]. Only thing I can think is to keep them separate from the birds in the future.

This saddens me. I was looking at information on the internet about swine flu. It looks like they normally die due to a secondary infection like staph. This is present on the pigs skin. If you experience this again maybe try washing the pigs with boiled water in addition to putting the lime down. Also changing their food trough could help stop this bacteria as well. You are an inspiration with all your efforts!

Sorry to hear about the pigs. I've been thinking about how they could have gotten infected, living in that enclosure. I recall long ago, before your wife got those pigs for you, you mentioned that there were wild hogs in the area since you found their tracks. Since you kept your pigs safe, and fed them good food, its very likely that they got infect through water- the source might have been infected up stream by the wild hogs, and then it got mixed in with pig food after it cooled down. It would be a lot of work, but a secure, covered well might become necessary if you ever chose to raise pigs at the farm again.

But, you have proven, time and again, that you are resourceful, intelligent, and dedicated. I think you will rise above this setback and emerge victorious in the end. This wasn't six months resulting in failure; it was six months of learning. Your herd grew under your care; you had five strong and healthy piglets born to you. Next time, it will take a year or more, but you will succeed. Clean up the pig pen. Sterilize it as well as you can. Remember to spread lime in the thatch above the pens, too. If need be, consider even moving all of it completely, and then try again. It's only a failure if you give up.

I know some people will say its bad, but its actually quite common, and does not harm them, but maybe consider wing clipping the chicken rebels that are ruining your garden ? typically older chickens are not really good at flying, so it would not be necessary there.
