4:31 although it´s been only three weeks since I got the Logi MX Ergo, I couldn´t be happier, your thumb muscles don´t get tired at all, the way your wrist rests over the mouse it´s much more natural than the rest of the mice show here. I was very sceptical at first about how long it would take me to get used to it, and it was matter of a few hours.

Logitech's trackball is the best work mouse IMO. It stopped my hand pain shortly I started to use it. I now have been using it for over a year working OT and still no pain. The key is to give it 3 months so that thumb muscle develops and tiredness will fade.

Before commiting to a vertical mouse, or other ergonomic mice I suggest trying a "vertical mousepad" too. I got an early sample of one from Orb Control called a mouseramp. Too much to explain in a comment, but the highlights are use any normal mouse, don't drag your pinky finger like a vert mouse, more accuracy, and you may be pleasantly surprised just as I was. Simple but comfortable. Peace.

I'm currently in the Goldilocks zone where mice are concerned. It fits my palm perfectly, and is the perfect weight when the batteries are fitted. The problem is that buying from an online retailer is a hit and miss affair. I prefer to try them for size, before purchasing, I suffer from Carpal tunnel syndrome (due to diabetes) and I'm exceedingly particular about mice.

Thanks for the info Steve - as a leftie it's very difficult for me to find a decent mouse. I'm particular about the shape, size and weight of a mouse. There isn't a tonne of left-handed support out there when it comes to mice/mouses. I spend on average 8-10hours per day on the PC. I'm currently using a logitech M705 mouse as it's size was the best of a bad bunch for me. I spent some time in the store trying out different ones, returning them and ended up settling on the M705 for now. I came across your video here while researching ergonomic mouse. Im thinking about trying one of the vertical type ones and am super happy to just learn that there is a lefty version. I've been suffering quite badly for many years now with RSI in my left shoulder and am looking to try ease that pain a little. I do switch between a mouse and a graphics tablet as I find the pen forces me to move more than my wrist but I find my fingers cramp up from holding the pen for long periods. Would you recommend trying one of the vertical types ? I'm also toying with the idea of 3D modelling my own mouse case to fit my hand exactly and having it 3D printed.

It seems the engineers are so far up their own ass that they can't seem to dedicate themselves to perfecting a design that has been proven to work, instead mutating it every 2 years so that it loses features that were good and add a bunch of useless un-intuitive crap. Take the G700s, it has the potential to be one of the best mice, the shape, ergonomics and features were almost flawless, though it is plagued by software issues and poor build quality of the buttons. Now instead of fixing the downfalls and perfecting the mouse they just drop it all together. The Mx Master is also another prime example of this. It got subtle improvements ergonomically, but then they totally screwed up the button placements to the point it's unusable. The same can be said about keyboards. Today's keyboards are imo horrendously bad. The majority don't come with wrist-rests and the one's that do are not even close to hitting the mark. All they focus on now is RGB lighting and useless fluff. This even extends into the realm of office chairs. Modern office chairs are mostly terrible. I have 30 year old chairs that have more features, function and comfort than any modern premium chair. So much technology, so much talent but it's all wasted with poor direction and no feel at all for what people actually like. /rant.

Styluses are pretty useful for navigating as well as graphics. Mine has supplanted my mouse for everything but gaming. The only downside is their desktop footprint. Wacom tablets are the best and have a batteryless stylus. I started with a 4x6(?) and was sold. I now have a 6x8 for added precision in graphics but it takes up a fair amount of space and the smaller one would do fine for most people. Thank you for sharing this. It helped. I was still considering a trackball but leaning toward a vertical mouse. I'll go with the mouse now.

Dr. Steve, Thanks for one of the most appreciated helpful videos. I'm just curious why there's a problem with the logitech m570, the mouse that includes a trackball. Is it bad for a trackball position only, or is it bad for being a normal mouse too. Because I think it's shape and it, as a normal laser mouse, are good, and might be a better design as a laser mouse, than the other normal ones compared in this video.
@TheErgonomicsGuy
@TheErgonomicsGuy 10 жыл бұрын
Hab It is a bit of personal choice but typically the trackball will isolate the smaller muscles of the hand while a mouse encourages movement of teh arm and shoulder. If you like the track ball the larger the ball the better. Try and and use an open had when moving the ball. This way you aren't compressiong the wrist.
@agent0071001
@agent0071001 10 жыл бұрын
You're quite right, it does really put some tension on one's hand, especially for using it for first time,and it takes long time to get used to it and that adds to the problem. And thanks, the open hand hint is VERY effective, it reduces the amount of tension alot, even in using normal mice. Thanks for you reply.

I make insane hours behind my pc so my wrist started to hurt a lot, even though I was using a very comfortable Logitech Perfomance MX. I tried the nice looking Kensington Expert Trackball, but it requires me to lift my hand and move it quite a lot causing the top center part of my hand/wrist to hurt. I also felt less productive and awkward moving around and working the scroll wheel. It was also quite bulky on my desk. Because I still felt pain in my hand I put it aside. Reluctantly I tried the cheap looking & feeling Logitech M570. To my big surprise using the little trackball with my thumb actually felt very intuitive. Within 5 minutes I was already quite productive working painlessly. I had to get used to completely resting my hand on the mouse because no hand movement is required while it feels like my regular mouse in my hand. This is what I think Steve was doing wrong: try resting your arm on the table and your full hand on the mouse. It will should feel quite comfortable. I actually like that the buttons and scroll wheel feel about the same as I'm used to but without the pain. I also find the back-forward buttons useful. I'm also very surprised with the battery life of the m570, it seems to last forever while my MX runs empty in a day. Another advantage is that it's wireless and pairable along with my Performance MX on the same receiver (so I have a spare receiver stored in one mouse now) and I can switch mice quickly. So what don't I like about the M570? Well it looks and feels cheap (a bit plastic, light and I don't like the colors) so at 65 EUR I think it's way overpriced. I'd say it's worth 35 EUR but I don't have much choice. It's also a little small & lower compared to my much better looking performance mx and the scrollwheel feels way cheaper. However this is not a real problem and most mice feel and look cheap compared to the MX. I spent days looking for a solution so I hope someone else will find this helpful. Try the M570, I think you'll be suprised. I do appreciate your video but I must disagree about the M570. I understand it's personal but I think it serves it's purpose quite well.

Steve Meagher I tried the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 4 but I sent in back within a few days. I still had to use my wrist, because my arm is not precise enough compared to tiny wrist movements (for my use), resulting in pain. That mouse position is quite awkward to me, it feels better in my upperarm but I had too little control and precision in any sensitivity. I would like to see someone working that mouse in a DAW because I really can't. My wacom tablet was way more precise with a pen. Maybe it's ok for more basic stuff. I am very happy to say that I've been using the M570 for months now without any trouble and I have no pain in my wrist anymore. It's just a little less precise that a normal mouse but has some other advantages like never having to lift the mouse up. I've actually even resumed my gym routine without any trouble. I'm just saying this mouse is a lot better for some people than one might think!

Dr. Steve, I'm not sure I understand the problems with the Logitech M570. I have been using one for a long time. There are people who prefer it to the finger operated ones you show in your videos. I would have loved to give those finger operated ones a try, but the stores here in Dubai didn't have it. They only have stuff that appeals to gamers. However since Logitech is a great brand, they do sell the M570.. So that is what I got and I like it. It works well for me. Have not experienced any pain using it. My only pain comes in the form of a broken ego... can type a damn word without making too many mistakes. Even if I look at the keys. :)

Larger mice can supinate the hand and increase compression of the pisiform , small bone on the edge of the hand. This can cause compression of the ulnar nerve. But if it works for you it's probably OK.

What is your opinion on keyboard layouts. Do you think that QWERTY is a cause for RSI and Carpal Tunnel syndrome?
@TheErgonomicsGuy
@TheErgonomicsGuy 8 жыл бұрын
I think over use is more of a problem than the layout of the keyboard. However there is a DOVARK ? Keyboard with a different key layout.

+Steve “The Ergonomics Guy” Meagher I am well aware of Dvorak & alternative layouts. I for one used Colemak; lesser known, but I think really good. julxrp.wordpress.com/2012/11/21/colemak-vs-dvorak/

Hello Dr Steeve, What mouse would you recommend for drawing in autocad? I have wrist and index finger pain. I have already tried the anker vertical mouse, but the buttons are a little bit hard to click and the mouse weight too much for me. I have a medium size hand.

Hello dr. Steve, thanks for the nice and informative video. What would you raccomend between evoluent and a trackball like the big kensington one ? I used the evoluent for an entire year and i find it 100x better than a normal mouse, but i still have elbow problem because i cant find a good sitting position. I'm thinking about alternating vertical and big trackball, would it be wise in your opinion? Ty again for the great video :)

Thanks! Check out my video on the Kneely chair. I usually like a chair that has adjustable parts so you can move them throughout the day. Not a big fan of the balls or kneeling chairs.

Would be helpful if, rather than just telling the obvious points about the mice, you went more into the physical therapy related benefits of one design over another.

Thumbs way down because of the lousy audio. Using the camera's mic in a hard walled space is a really bad idea. Don't ever do it again, please. Use a lapel mic next time and give your audience decent audio. Video with bad audio is crap.

Are you serious? Who moves his mouse with his shoulder? All the movement and strain comes from the wrist...And then you go and say that a trackball like M570 is worse than that? This type of trackball has saved a lot of wrists out there. And the thumb is built to move like this unlike the wrist. With all those gamers out there using their thumbs for many hours daily have you ever heard of a thumb syndrome or sth?? Of course not...The problems come from the wrist and not the thumb...

Your thumb can still cause wrist problems as the tendons still go through the wrist.

The key is to use it few hours a day for 3m months, so that muscle can develop because those muscle group are not normally used. But nowadays many want instant result and turn down this mouse. They (including this therapist) is missing out on a great value ergonomic mouse.

More information about the natural position of your hand in relation to the mouse and how your hand naturally fits on a vertical mouse in contrast to a traditional mouse where you have to force your hand and rotate in horizontal. Things like that.
