Depending when you trade in, the second or third biggest cost of a vehicle is depreciation. And EVs' values drop like a rock. There are Porsche dealerships who outright refuse to take THEIR OWN EVs as trade-ins because they can't sell them. They can't even sell the new ones, much less the second hand ones.

If you must buy an expensive Porsche for snob value, don’t be surprised if the value plummets when it is made obsolete by a much better one. Particularly if you buy their prototype.

I think the overall practicality (or lack thereof) is really what will keep EVs a niche vehicle. You mention correctly, EVs appeal to affluent households that already have a primary vehicle. Even those people realize the limitations of EVs. I think EVs can fill a niche that way, ie a largely city-driven vehicle, where the owner has access to plug it in overnight. An owner who is affluent and can afford the EVs pricy cost. I think you will find that these affluent owners may take their EV on one long road trip, then say, “never again!” So, yes, a niche vehicle at best!

No they won't. They had a chance in the 1930s. Much more has been created since they just can't profit from them. It's a scam like climate change that they created in the 70s. The best option will always be living close to employment and school with the right public transport.

It is called early adopters. They always pay over the odds and usually get clobbered with the early adopter issues. A lot of progress has been made now and things have advanced considerably. The real issue is that it has taken decades to perfect the ICE engine with very small increments in efficiency. Those have pretty much reached their peak. The relative pace of advancement in EV is orders of magnitude higher. The ranges being achieved now are similar to ICE and charging is down to 10-15 minutes in some battery packs. If you have a swappable battery, less than six minutes to replace. The added benefit is that when you leave your home you always have a full tank and very cheap. Regarding your $18000 EV should be bargain as the battery is likely to last for a considerable time. Tesla’s have done 300,000-400,000 miles and counting.

Slowdown in sales is just a plateau, a normal predictable outcome related to new technology adoption. Sales will increase later as newer offerings become available. New models will include improvements, like LFP battery chemistry which is fire resistant. With regard to "cheaper to run", never mentioning common level-2 home charging is an extremely misleading omission. That provides roughly 200 miles of range overnight, at discounted rates when enrolled for off-peak charging.

EVs have a place but it's not on main or country roads. Rather than making an expensive fire bomb, the trend could have/should have been a small local commuter to take people from their homes to a local public transport hub to carry them into the city, then back again. Many years ago, I wrote a private paper outline my thoughts. Lot of water under the bridge since then. I don't know what I have done with it. If I can dig it out of the cobwebs or wherever it could be hiding, I might bringing it up again.

When solid-state batteries arrive, this could mean a kiss of death to ICE cars.
@irishmick6709
@irishmick6709 15 күн бұрын
You could be all too right!Solid State batteries are safer, they are more energy dense ( longer lifespan, 50% more distance ) can be fully charged from empty to full in 15 minutes without battery degradation. And they are heat and cold resistant and they are lighter.The downside is that they are far more expensive and there can be other causes for degradation because of the solid electrolyte.
