@JessicaSimonson1976 that means nothing really. Show me a professional racer that isn't a media "influencer" that wears that garbage

@pnw_r6 it doesn't have to cost a fortune to meet standards. My helmet meet 22.06 ECE/ Dot standards only cost me 139.00....most helmet manufacturers making you pay for their brand name.

Proper gear is one of the underappreciated elements of riding imo… It feels great when you find a piece of gear that viably improves your riding experience… just gotta take your time and find the right gear for your needs, and at the right price/on sale, etc…

Gotta agree with ya there! My red, white & blue Biltwell is cool with the vinyl stars, but the freed Conn Modular is far more comfortable.

I actually study motorcycle culture pre 1930s! Would love to mention that a lot of people felt helmets were illegitimate, that's why it took so long to make it commonplace. Even during the boardtrack racing craze where land speeds records were broken almost every weekend, they only wore football helmets of the time which were just leather with stuffing.

I've been riding since the mid 70's and have been fortunate enough to survive a couple of crashes that probably should have killed me, but even the gear I was wearing on a particular night in the mid 80's is something that I attribute to saving my life . . . A café racer style jacket with a high enough collar on my neck kept my jugular vane from getting demolished by a rock wall that I skimmed across the top of. The scar on that jacket proved to me that it saved my life. So . . . I'm living proof that gear is important, and thrilled to know I'm living in the future. Still not an ATGATT guy, but I NEVER throw a leg over without a helmet, and motorcycle specific jacket at the very least.

It was fun to explain this evolution to my grandma. When I was buying a helmet and basic equipment such as protectors, boots and gloves. She was saying that I am not doing this in correct order as I should have a moto first. She was a rider back in the 70s but here, the motorcycles were basically bikes with engines (she had a WSK 125 which barely produced 7hp and 9Nm of torque, where we are passing our licenses on MT07 today). Back then riders didn't use helmets or any protection, as they were unavailable and just owning a motorcycle was a big thing itself (money wise speaking). Only after seeing the "modern" motorcycle she agreed that I will definitely need that :D

9:28 I like the way motoairbag v4 does their airbag. It's a tether, yes, but it's not activated by how FAR you pull, but by how QUICK you pull, thus allowing you the ability to still stand up and move around if you need to but still deploys before you've even left the bike if hit by a car

All the advances in safety tech still can’t fix stupid. We still run tons of MVA calls where no one in the car had a seatbelt on…aaaand they’re dead.

I have a "Cafe racer" style Leather jacket... I took it with me in the weekend on an ADV ride. And I was so glad I did, the weather was unbearably hot! I had to strap my ADV jacket to the top of the luggage & wear the much cooler jacket, even if it's not as safe in an incident, it was safer than getting heat stroke!

This was EXCELLENT - thank you for having taken the time to give us a pretty comprehensive view of how all this got started up, and especially pointing how human safety was kind of a, "Huh, well, I guess we gotta do SOMETHIN' to make sure there are humans around to BUY our bikes," rationale at the beginning.

"Motorcycle safety is the best it's ever been." Yammie, I ask ya... Has there ever been a time in motorcycle history where society said: "These safety improvements are reducing way to many injuries and fatalities! Is there a way we can make this gear worse?" My guy, the present day is always going to have better gear than yesterday. ESPECIALLY with airbag vest technology using AI. Every time someone goes down and that vest gets sent back to the factory, the data is analyzed. The system then applies the lessons learn from patterns to improve deployment.

Nice stuff! Hey, in your opinion, what would be the most maintenance-free, motorcycle to consider, style notwithstanding? I am curious what to consider for just jumping on and riding without worrying about breaking down or having to go back to shop for periodic maintenance other than oil changes and new tires if possible. Cheers!

Yamaha is rated #1 by Consumer Reports. The virago/V Star/ Star bikes are dead-on reliable and go from my 250 to like 1300. The newer 250 & 650's are quite popular.

Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda are solid choices. Japanese bikes are famous for their general reliability whereas European bikes are famous for being very fun rides that need frequent maintenance. Obviously all generalisations.
