One of the most beloved and unique features of the Fallout game franchise is the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System. While VATS didn't officially exist until Fallout 3, with the classic games having the similar Aimed Shot mechanic, some sort of game mechanic has existed to help the player properly place their shots. But how has this mechanic evolved throughout the 20+ year lifespan of the franchise? Well, let's talk about it. This is The Evolution of the V.A.T.S.

VATS always has been a aimbot for enemies that are right in my face, but are still dodging attacks erratically for me. If VATS doesn't reduce damage taken while active, it can be considered useless for melee builds and is almost useless anyways for sniper builds (unless you suck at aiming). Also it's good for wallhacking against mines that are placed in grass.

I much more appreciate the V.A.T.S in 76 since it caters towards the online play and to me seems like what V.A.T.S would be like if we had it in real life or what Pip-boy wearers might actually experience when using it.

76 is probably the best and most grounded version of VATS. I feel like 3-NV were just too easy and gave you essentially a free "you can kill me lol" button. 4 nearly got it right, but 76 just flat out removing the time freezing made VATS way more realistic.

Considering the time dilation, you wouldn't realize it except for them receiving a bit less damage and - maybe? - being more accurate for a short time. (Except for the melee teleport) It's not like the Sandevistan effect in Cyberpunk

You already fight multiple people with VATS or VATS like software. Vault Dwellers with Pipboys Synth Coursers

There was an Institute terminal in 4 where synths would have some sort of ability that oddly sounds extremely similar to VATS, but it seems like we never got anything beyond that.

I'm doing a VATS only playthrough of Fo4 right now and I will say strictly using VATS with a pistol build is super fun. Using the deliverer with a 15% damage increase per shot is busted mid game. Can't wait to get the 25% third rank. The only annoying thing is how broken the Mysterious Stranger is since a quarter of the time he just appears, does nothing, and then leaves.

Recommend using vats to take out ghouls knees (specially the high power ones) it renders them harmless, which helps when there's a large batch of them 😅

What's even worse is that he'll usually just kill off enemies that were just about to die anyway. Never any bullet sponge super mutants that have taken the first few shots or anything like that.

Vats has a ton of potential. They only need to look at perk mods on new Vegas for inspiration. One such perk for example let's the accuracy of vats increase the longer you are aiming at an enemy so it would increase accuracy by increments of 5 percent for every second you are aiming at an enemy then hit vats

Hey great video it’s nice to learn about the nuances of vats also I have some good news about 76 it takes a bit but you can essentially have back a version of grim reaper sprint there’s several food items that increase ap regen plus the armor legendary effects you can basically make weapons use vats indefinitely it’s not hard to accomplish either hope it’s useful information

They need to be rid of the crit meter. Keep stealth crits, and base crit for each weapon with certain unique variants having a higher multiplier. Also could definitely work a perk in that allows one to take less damage during vats activation. Rewards for using it are needed

I would love to have a boss fight where the boss has a fully upgraded Pip-Boy with all that entails even perks, essentially if you use vats on him he'd essentially Auto Dodge, imagine if father Elijah actually tinkered with that Pip-Boy he was wearing and upgraded the fuck out it would be in character

What if vats potentially could be a injected drug via pipboy, or stimpak, that makes time feel slow (like jet) and make the user feel fast and active, making them aim and shoot faster? (The AP usage could also be the drug making the user feel more tired after use, and with the 10 percent lower damage, it could be a strength inducing or endurance inducing drug aswell, or a combination of both)

I've always hated the crit banking system. It's garbage compared to the random chance. It makes me not want to use the crit, just like how you get a weapon but want to save it for the right moment and you end up beating the game without even using the weapon. I hope in FO5 they remove this garbage system

Doubt it'll get removed, if anything, we may even get the Fallout 76 version in Fallout 5. VATS should've been always been able to be leveled up separately to the normal perks/skills. Maybe create ''Update'' and ''Prototype Enhancement'' Holotapes which can be collected like Magazines in Fallout 4.
