Which I do give him credit for...he's a great filmmaker that I beileve has been compromised due to financial/contractual reasons of some sort and lost his way as a modern horror industry plant. Thank you for this! I can't believe it, but I believe I am going to skip this one. I am a Christian and yes I love horror movies. A friend wasn't allowed to see The Exorcist when she was a child because her parents believed it was from the devil. I explained to her how The Exorcist was so much more than the profanity coming out of a 12 year old girl. It had a tense atmosphere, showed the struggles of a single mom trying to keep her sanity while trying to find out what's wrong with her daughter, and the internal battle of a priest who has lost his faith. And as religious as they were, I couldn't understand why they wouldn't love exorcism movies. This isn't about a girl running in the woods from a murderer having to rely on her own strength and wit to survive. With exorcism movies you don't defeat the evil yourself, or even with a community of people. You have to go to God to intervene. It's the ultimate good v evil. If DGG didn't explore this, then I am not interested.
@Evan-e5z Жыл бұрын
I agree I just watched the movie last night, it seems like nowadays shows and movies try to deny God and his power. With the exorcist being about demonic possession and needing God to exorcise the demon out, the movie tries to make it seem like God has no power over the demon but instead people coming together has the power. I think that’s very disrespectful to not only Christianity but to most religions. Also I know you said you weren’t going to see the movie but spoiler alert anyway,at the end of the movie the demon winds up killing one of the girls and let’s the other live, I see this as the devil winning, and that also doesn’t seem right, especially since the girl who died did nothing wrong but still goes to hell.
@JohnyTheWizKid Жыл бұрын
That's because they are anti-christianity and want to avoid that formula on how it's supposed to be done like you said.
@nightshade18910 ай бұрын
@@Evan-e5zI’ve been seeing that too, like how are you gonna defeat demons if you don’t believe in God or at least acknowledge that the demons wouldn’t exist without God. Especially when demons were essentially fallen angels, angels that God created before they decided that they wanted to go against God who is the embodiment of good. We as humans if you read the Bible and actually believe in it, Once both Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, all of us humans were born imperfect and adding the free will we already have made us have the ability to do good and evil things. To defeat absolute evil you need something that is absolute good to destroy absolute evil in this case you need God who is the absolute good. We as humans aren’t perfect like that. We’re full of grey auras most of the time, which is why in the Exorcist franchise or other demon possessed horror they call to God or use tools connected to God to call upon him to make up and help for the imperfection that we have to help defeat demons. I’m sorry I went on a rant, even if you don’t believe in God like that, you have to at least respect where the source material for these types of things are from even if you aren’t religious.

The original is honestly, even 50 years later, close to a perfect film. It stands on its own even outside of the horror genre as a film very well nade, well acted, well scored. It treats the audience as intelligent with its foreshadowing, the scares are genuine, well timed and executed as well as plot appropriate, and the story, while leaving room for nuance and interpretation at the close of the film, has all of the closure it ever needed. Respect to Brad Dourif, the guy is amazing at whatever he puts his hand to, but i cant help but be cynical of anything following the original film up. Yeah, I'm Catholic (not a radical or anything) maybe devout? I personally like the Exorcist 1 and 3 for the Catholic aspect of exorcism. The fact that they had literally 7 different religions in this new movie was borderline disrespectful to the original and the third movie (the author of the book directed the third movie).

I agree, I'm not shocked because DGG is a raging lefty but this s@@t with modern filmmakers disrespecting what came before them pisses me off.

I agree 100% with your review! You could not sum up my experience with this film any better. You were very respectful and honest with your review! I don't know how anyone could twist your words with this or be mad at you in the comments. But your doing a great job with your Channle Cody! Keep up the good work 👍

I was surprised how much I liked the first half of the movie, it then rapidly goes off the rails. Why is it so hard to make a great movie in modern times? Not an ok movie, but a GREAT movie?

Very True, Cody, "The Exorcist" (1973), did NOT need ANY sequel. This original film stands on its own! 👍🏻

I felt it was extremely lacking of portraying the girls friendship and overall development. One second they're in school, the next they're performing pendulum work in the woods. There was nothing that showed their friendship overall and nothing that showed Angela's efforts of trying to talk to her mom prior to that moment. I felt disconnected throughout the movie. It was okay but nothing I would watch again.

Good point. The storyline lacked greatly. There should have been a more gradual possession with more creepy scene ideas like the original movie. Maybe add horrified reactions with discussion by the hospital staff. I could go on and on. Believer had acting characters like practically all movies. The original had a realism or reality effect with real life like reactions or acting. I see no effort or intention to top the original.
@devonbrooks246 Жыл бұрын
Yep you nailed it. Issues with this movie was how insulting it is to the Catholic faith. They basically made the priest take a seat and say "We don't need you." The girl that ended up being free from the devil was the one without any faith in God. Her only escape was her dead mothers scarf. If she wasn't trying to contact her dead mother maybe she wouldn't be in this mess. Also, Ellen Burstyn was a waste of time. The way they used her then quickly got rid of her was such a crap move. Her face was obviously only used to sell tickets.

It was nice to see Ellen and kind of interesting too but she had bad lines and couldn’t benefit this bad sequel. A movie should be great, even if it doesn’t quite live up to the original. I’ve given up on hoping to get shit my pants scared. This was like a bad TV series episode.
@victoria_is Жыл бұрын
IMO if you're gonna benefit from the credibility of the name The Exorcist, then you have to live up to that name. You can't just benefit from an ip and then expect fans to be happy when your product isn't up to that standard you set yourself. If they wanted people to go in with zero expectations then make it an original movie. You just can't have it both ways.

I see no intention or effort to match or top the original film. Maybe a reasonable profit is the only goal (fuck the fans). Believer was mostly terrible.

The original is in my top 5 of all time. My expectations were low, but really wanted to like this new one. Saw it opening Thursday, damn I was disappointed. Hopefully DGG will learn and make a solid sequel and a kick ass finale.

David Gordon Green has made excellent movies. I love Prince Avalanche, George Washington, Undertow, and Joe. When it comes to his horror films, I prefer his raunchy comedies like Pineapple express. What a strange career.

Right. Made to make young females jump in their seat and tell their friends to go see it. It lacked certain aspects that made the original so great. Characters instead of real life behaving acting the original had for example.

It’s a shame that this film franchise didn’t go to A24 or RackaRacka. I feel like they would’ve been willing to take the risks to make it horrifying.

You know what, I'm proud, PROUD that I didn't see The Exorcist Believer. Just because I liked David Gordon Green's Halloween Trilogy (yes, all three installments) that doesn't mean that I'm not blind to criticisms. Added to which, I'm not THAT devoted to the church of The Exorcist Franchise. The only ones I enjoyed were the original and 3 (underrated, don't have to watch 2, and tells an original story that's ABOVE AND BEOND BETTER than this movie).

I felt that the film went too fast when it went from the girls being found to them acting demonic. I feel like the film should have went on for a couple of minutes of having them be normal for the most part, and THEN the weird/creepy things start to happen
@CodyLeachYT Жыл бұрын
Oh it was rushed for sure. I could’ve talked for another 10 minutes about issues but I talked long enough.
@techhpro Жыл бұрын
Yes. Part of what made the original so great was a more gradual possession. They should have added more creepy scene ideas. The on off bathroom light wasn’t good like most of the movie. Actors acting characters takes away from the realism vs. people as they would behave in real life. I would add hospital staff horrified reactions and discussions. This movie was made for decent profit and not to impress.

The original is one of the best horror movie's of all time and should have been left alone it didn't need a sequel and yes Ellen Burstyn was wasted in this movie you really don't need her at all
@techhpro Жыл бұрын
I’m still hoping and waiting for a sequel that will at least match or even top the original as far as scary. 5 decades later we’re still left empty handed. I’m surprised Ellen is still alive. It was nice and interesting to see her back but didn’t help the movie. She should have known it was too dangerous to confront the demon alone in that room. Stupid is a commonality in bad horror flicks of course.

Cody, when you update The Exorcist rankings include the William Blatty official sequel The Ninth Configuration, which you forgot to include in your horror movie franchise rankings series.

This is why I hate most modern horror movies today. Sure, there are some that are good but most of them especially horrors involving demons and demonic possession are pretty much done to death plus they have no plot, zero character development and dumb, pointless jump scares every five mins. What made horror movies like the original Exorcist good was that they gave the audience time to get to know the characters before all the horrifying stuff starts to happen. As for the horror, it was all down to atmosphere and the visuals and when it came to the scares, they were well thought out and jump scares were usually silent which to me is more effective than having some annoying loud sting of music or noise to startle the audience. It seems that Hollywood studios today just doesn't want to do what made classic horror movies so good like character development and good storytelling because they believe that we the audience are dumb, have short attention spans and would find establishing the characters and story "boring" so the studios dumb down the movie and throw in a bunch of annoying, loud, predictable jump scares in hoping that it stops the audience from falling asleep during the film.

Exorcist and Exorcist III are everything to me. Everything else is a mess, including the second installment, the prequels, the TV show, and so on.

3 had some interesting parts to the story although I didn’t find it scary. During the exorcism, fire and people coming out of the floor or Scott getting pushed up the wall was over dramatic giving the devil too much power. My favorite scene was the nurse in the hospital looking for the noise and then comes the big scissors. The other nurse crawling on the ceiling was a nice idea.

Dont understand the hate whatsoever, i love the original and number 3 , and truthfully loved this new one. It was creepy , good pace , interesting characters , and a very scary none Hollywood ending . I also didnt think it relied on jump scares at all and had very creepy visuals . I also love they didnt overuse the cameos , and focused on the new characters whilst having a nod too the original. Truly dont understand the hate for it , i was all in by the end .

Always ❤ your reviews 😂. When I was a kid me and my bestie watched the Exorcist when my mom was out of the house. It scared the crap out of us ( both Catholic girls). I watch it every October. Honestly I tend to avoid possession movies cause nothing is going to top my experience with the original. Ellen Burstyn used the money to fund an acting scholarship at Pace University which is awesome 😂. I’ll check out the Evil Lurks movie, thanks!

Thanks for mentioning that people of faith could take offence to the downplaying of the importance of Christ/God. I very much felt that. This 2023 BS of being so damn afraid of offending people applies to everyone accept the Christians. Cos f**k what the Christians feel and say because “they’ll forgive us anyway. They have to.” No, Jesus is the authority and only He can drive demons out or those working in His name. I believe that in life but even more so, the films in this franchise believes that. Don’t change it to “all belief systems are equal” because that flies in the face of everything this franchise has stood for for 50 years. Again, thanks for having the balls to point that out.
