I think Holden's broadcast was brilliant. We don't know if it ever got heard by anybody. We were told that The Donager was "within jamming range" before Holden sent it. If nobody knew these five were being taken into Mars' custody, Mars could easily have disappeared all of them and they would have eventually just been assumed to have died in space. Now, if they disappear, Mars will have to offer up an explanation as to how and why they died while prisoners on The Donager. It's not much, but it was the very best thing Holder could do for himself and his buddies. BTW, if somebody ever conducted a fan poll to rate the episodes from all six seasons, s1.e2 would be a strong candidate for bottom spot. I you loved it (I did, too), then you are already assured that, by the end, you will proclaim this show as the best ever. Let me be the first to say that it just gets better and better each episode until the season 3 finale, and by then you welcome a breather of sorts as things calm down a bit and some new stories begin in s4.

The belter language is really cool, because a lot of thought went into it. If you like looking into etymology The Expanse certainly has you covered and at least imo doesn't have to shy away from any comparison with more popular fantasy languages :) Apparently the books go really in depth on this and you can actually learn the language, but usually it can be pieced together what is talked about and what is meant to be expressed. So don't worry, if you don't understand 100% of it, neither do i and most people who saw and enjoyed the show :) If it is really needed, someone will translate it. Tiny "SPOILERS" for the belter language, if you consider it as such: I'm certainly no expert on it, but just to clarify, since it seems to bother you (in the "i want to know now" sense): "sasa" means "to know" "ke" is used to express a question, so you'll hear it a lot at the beginning or end of a sentence "keya" is a subform of ke and means something like "right ?". The connotation being that whoever is asked the question is likely to agree and answer "yes". For that reason it is also used in rhetorical questions, when an answer is obsolete (everybody knows that the "right" answer is "yes"). So, when you hear "sasa keya" at the end of the sentence, it would mean something like "you know that, right ?" expressing "common knowledge" or an "irrefutable truth", much like the Dothraki in GoT use "it is known" for example.
@dante20372 жыл бұрын
Actually, the books don't go into the language hardly at all. In fact, the Belter language appears far less in the books than it does in the show. The writers of the books have said if you want to learn the Belter language to go off the show's version because it's actually a thought-out language. The books didn't put much thought into it at all.

Also, we hear the phrase wellwala meaning traitor to my people. The word comes from an English word, gravity-well, and wala which means lover. (I don't remember which language it came from). Essentially it means planet-lover. Hence, because it is used to describe belters, it means a better that has betrayed their people, hence Miller's explanation, "traitor to my people"

@kirkdarling41202 жыл бұрын
This series is maddenly effective with their cliffhanger endings. It was much more painful having to watch it weekly. You're actually kind of unusual liking Holden and his crew. They're not presented as very likeable people. Julie Mao is from Earth; her father is a powerful Earth corporate boss, Jules-Pierre Mao. In rebellion against her father, Julie has fallen in with the Belter cause and is running with the Outer Planets Alliance (which is similar to the Palestinian Liberation Organization or the Irish Republican Army). So Julie was on a Belter ship, the Scopuli. Somehow the Scopuli wound up captured. We don't know where Julie or the rest of the original Scopuli crew are, but a Martian-made distress beacon was left on the Scopuli to lure the Canterbury. Then some ship with stealth technology destroyed the Canterbury, and as far as we know, only the Martians have stealth technology...except that we also know a Belter was caught smuggling stealth technology. The detective Joe Miller was looking through Julie's "space Tinder" account. I think you noticed she connected with the guy whose tagline was "I'll be your sherpa." A couple of dialogue points: Amos (the big guy) said he could not decide for himself if he should kill Holden, except Naomi wouldn't like it. When Amos was holding a gun to Holden's head, Amos looked to Naomi for permission to shoot. When Alex (the pilot) was suffering hypoxia, he was mumbling about "one more run and I'll be back home, honey." He also keeps a photograph of a woman and child. When Joe Miller caught the young water thief, the kid told him that the griegas (gangsters) had left Ceres. Miller wondered for a moment why the gangsters would voluntarily leave their own territory. These are the kinds of clues you have to watch for...there is no fluff in these episodes, every line is significant to a future event or to understanding the characters. When you finish a season and go back, you'll see all the little things that gave you clues to future events that you missed the first time. That's one of the things that makes this show so re-watchable...and why fans of the show love re-watching it with reactors like you.
@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps2 жыл бұрын
What's not to like about Holden's crew? EDIT: Also, no one actually can decide what they "should" do since "should" is a myth, it never exists outside the imagination. But of course that's not quite what Amos is thinking of.
@golfr-kg9ss2 жыл бұрын
The show can't depict the physical difference between earthers, martians and belters like the books can. The belter that is being tortured would be typical. Martians a taller than earthers but not as tall as belters. Not enough actors around to meet the needs of an actual representation of the different groups. In the show Belters will usually have quite a few tattoos.

Mars is mostly descendents of Earth's "best and brightest" engineers and such. The Belters are prople who made it out to "the frontier" later on to escape their lives on Earth, and their descendents. "The chief looking one" is Amos Burton. One of the most interesting and intriguing sci-fi "tough guys" ever created. I *HIGHLY* suggest and encourage you to read, or listen to, The Expanse novella called "The Churn." It is only about 60 pages and is the *dark* backstory of how Amos Burton became the Amos Burton we see and got off Earth for a life in space. Amos is definitely my favorite Expanse character, followed closely by Camina Drummer, who you will meet next season. My top five would be rounded out with Deputy Undersecretary for the United Nations Crisjen Avasarala, genius engineer and brilliant leader Naomi Nagata, and Martian Marine Gunny Sergeant Roberta 'Bobby' Draper, who you'll also meet next season. *NO spoilers: In Camina Drummer's first scene, Detective Miller starts to walk out of an office in frustration, but my girl Camina steps in front of him like, "Not through this door, pal." That action kinda sets the stage for her character. She, Naomi, and Amos go through the best character archs, imho. As big as that Martian Flagship, The Donnager, is, it is only about one third the size of the Canterbury ice hauler destroyed last episode. The detectives names are Josephus Miller, born and raised on Ceres Station, and Demitri Havelock, Earther. *Someone,* possibly Mars, is trying to secretly start a war. The message Holden send gives them leverage by theoretically exposing who killed the Canterbury. For the record, the writers of The Expanse give great cliffhanger. ✌

You two are going to be angry at how episodes end A LOT. This show LOVES to leave episodes on cliff hangers. :) There are online dictionaries and pages giving lessons for the Belter Language used in the show. Wes Chatham (Amos) and Ty Franck (one of the authors of the books and consultant for series) do a video podcast on youtube called "Ty and That Guy" and they go back over episodes of the show together and other films they both enjoy. They also bring on fellow cast and crew and talk about the show as well. They mark what episodes they are on fairly well.

Um. I'm gonna say you might want to get comfortable with cliffhangers. Some of them are brutal to the point of abuse. The Scopuli was a belter ship, which Julie left on from Ceres. Just the beacon was Martian tech. We really don't know who did what or why yet, and, that mystery is a big part of the season 1 fun. We will get all the answers (always with more questions) and the pay-offs from some of the things already foreshadowed won't come for a while, like season 4 or 5 for some of them. Along the way, you'll see all of the characters grow and change and develop and you'll grow to love them. Meanwhile, I love hearing you trying to work it out. Next one! Next one!

Physics is actually a "character" in the books and the series, which adds to the tension. The average viewer is used to near-instantaneous communication with other people, so the idea that it might take minutes, or hours, for a message to go from one place to another becomes important.

Think of this show as a little bit like Game of Thrones - multiple viewpoints, and a mystery that will slowly make more and sense as the show progresses. The book writers worked for George RR Martin, as it happens. Miller is a classic "noir" cop - he understands the difference between the everyday grime and dirt of life that the rules don't apply for. He's not going to arrest some punk kids for stealing water because they're just kids. He won't turn in the slum landlord for not repairing the air filters because he knows that it won't matter - the landlord pays his bosses as well, so it's not going to go anywhere. He won't budge on actual justice though. Actual crimes that actually hurt people, like the slum landlord poisoning his slum by not cleaning his air filters, and he won't bother going through the system as it doesn't work.
