The pill the Martian was taking is basically a focus drug, allowing him to pick up on micro=expressions. That is why he was demanding to see Naomi's hands, and why it focused on his eyes constricting, and on the little 'tells' Holden and Naomi were making. The hat , it keeps the rain off his head1

to add, Belter language includes more hand expressivity than other languages due to the need to talk without sound waves (vaccuum) a bit like scuba divers need hand comms etc. So Naomi's micro-hand movements would be extra helpful to the interrogator

I’ve turned several people on to The Expanse by making them promise to watch the first four episodes. They all watched the first few episodes an told me they weren’t really digging it. After they saw the fourth, they were hooked. The first four are setting up multiple, intertwined storylines that all come crashing together later on, with a bunch of characters you don’t understand. If you stick with the show, you’ll find that all the characters are broken in some fundamental way. It’s what makes them who they are, and you will absolutely love them for it. Get ready for a wild ride!

I watched the whole of season one but it really didn't do it for me (having read the books first). Never watched the later seasons, other than reactions, which definately gets better. I always think of the OPA as almost like Sinn Fein and the IRA where they have both militaristic/terrorist activities and political aspirations as well. The OPA itself has many factions who all have their own opinions on how to achieve sovereignty.

The shortest way I'd describe The Expanse is following: "A beautiful story about what it means to be human." The Expanse shows humanity exactly as it is: imperfect, fallible, violent, hateful, suffering, loving, caring and amazing. OPA is more like an umbrella term: many different groups claim to be part of it, but it does not have any kind of united leadership, and even the idea of independent Belt means something else to each group. Groups in OPA range from the likes of Hong Kong protesters, all the way to IRA or Revolutionary Cells. As one character put it in one of the later episodes: "There's OPA, and there's OPA"

Another aspect that make this show excellent is that few characters are pure evil or good. Even Naomi. The main characters have reasons for being the way they are and why they change their behaviors sometimes. You can almost see the gears in their heads go click click click. Each in turn, you will learn why. Sometimes "good" people die, "bad" people get away. Like real life.

Jared Harris is the actor, son of Sir Richard Harris. Like father like son, both award winning actors. The pill is a focus drug, kind of like how some students take ADHD drugs when studying only 300+ years more of refining it. We're a ways a way from the first major plot hit for the story, but we're in for some excitement soon. I was interested in the show before this but this episode and the next are what hooked me. The story and characters/cast are what kept me hooked. They are complex and we get that development as the show goes on. Love were getting more humor from you. :) And finally I have a trick for getting over fear of needles. I did this as a kid and stopped being afraid ever since. Don't look away, watch it being stuck in closely. Eventually you get to seeing and feeling it isn't nearly as bad as your mind makes it out to be.

Loving the reactions even though you're not fully invested...yet. You're asking all the right questions and it's always fun to hear reactors speculate about where it's headed. Chrisjean used Frank, but she didn't actually lie to him. She told him they had caught an OPA agent carrying stealth tech from Mars, which is true. That was the belter she was torturing in the first episode. On a side note since you mentioned GoT: Ty Franck (creator of The Expanse, co-author of the books and producer on the show) was George R.R. Martin's personal assistant and Daniel Abraham (co-author of The Expanse books and producer) collaborated with Martin on a few books prior to writing The Expanse.

"It's love or admiration" - or not quite either... Amos is dear to my heart, for reasons, but his whole modus operandi comes from a very different place than most people. Naomi understands, and Holden and Alex learn, how to interact with him. The thing I find most impressive is that book Amos is a lot (like decades) older, but Wes Chatham TOTALLY nailed the character in this iteration.

You will be rewarded for sticking with this show. That's all I can really say. It has superceded Battlestar Galactica as the best sci-fi show ever. The Expanse starts slow (season 1 is basically a mystery story) but it just gets better and better and better. Fun exercise -- once you're in the middle of season 2, and season 3, and seasons 4, 5, 6, look back and ask yourself if you had any idea this was the show it would turn into. I guarantee it will continually surprise you.

The funny thing is I originally stopped watching because I never made it past Episode 2. Years later I was curious about a GIF someone had of a great moment from Episode 4. Invariably you will become invested in the characters. However, since you mentioned "thrones", there is a similarity. Just like the families in GoT, where each felt justified in their actions based on their perspectives; Earth, Mars, and the Belt will not be defined as good or evil, but all will do what they feel they must in order to survive and find their place in the expanse. At a certain point, the great writing becomes undeniable. Following someone new to the story on this journey is a favorite pastime for me. And I bet before it's over, you will announce at the end of an episode you can't wait to watch another.

The Belter creole and its history and development is fascinating. I won't say much about it except the hand gestures are due to the difficulty of expressing themselves in space suits. The other thing I like are the terms that are unique to the space environment like "Welwala"', literally someone who prefers the gravity wells of the inner planets, and my favorite, "Falota", which means "Floater". The OPA guy making the speech in Ep 1 says something like "when the falota hits the fan", lol.

Oh. Sorry, one more thing. Now that you're hooked, make a note to yourself to watch episode 1 of the first season. I completely agree it starts out slow but at the same time - and this will not make sense till you get to the end - it sets everything up. There is literally a conversation in the first episode that makes one of the last scenes in the last episode completely unsurprising - but you won't connect it till after it happens. Enjoy the ride. And when you get to the end don't stress - the first episode will play in a whole new way. I suspect that's part of why Expanse reaction channels are popular. It's fun to rewatch to see all the things we missed.

One of the underlying elements this episode makes a point about is how Belters communicate. In the early history of humanity's exploration/expansion into the Belt, people wore vac-suits most of the time, and being bulky and stiff and without good lighting of the helmet, the only other way to communicate besides radio would be through hand gestures. This became so commonplace that Belters eventually developed a form of sign-language that was just a part of their communication skills as speaking. Gia (the sex worker) helps teach Havelock a few things, and during Naomi's interrogation she sneaks a little insult into her folded arms. Lt. Lopez gets frustrated at Naomi because she's literally hiding one aspect of her "communication" from him that might be a tell, hence "hands where I can see them!"

Marie and I are having SO much fun watching your reactions to this episode. You are SPOT-on on a lot of things the you deduce, but then you say something and we look at each other and say...wait till she gets to this episode...her mind is going to be blown (and chuckle together). This really is a mystery being unfolded. You are right about Chrisjen...she is a master maninpulator (from a child) and she DOES have this belief that "Earth comes first". Protect Earth, and everything else falls into place. Mars still needs resources from Earth and so does the Belt. The Earth's view of the OPA is like the West sees the PLO, Al-Quida, ISIS, and every other "terrorist" organization in our current timeline. But, to the people of those geographical areas, these are the ONLY people fighting for their rights. I like how this show takes Earth politics of today, and "expands" on it for a solar system worth of human "expansion" and who's on top and who's on the bottom. All this is inbedded in the books, and the show is exploiting this richness on screen. Anderson Dawes is such a great character. Lots to learn from him. The interrogations of the the Knight's crew was great. Get them to turn on each other...to find the answers that are not always obvious. Alex being MRCN. That was a real shocker. Holden being from Earth and from a commune where he has EIGHT parents. Okay, interesting. Shed faked his medical license/degree...that tracks. We don't know what they got from Amos, which is interesting. Hmmmm? Naomi is being suspected of being OPA. Classic move and who is telling the truth? Not telling you anything...cannot wait to see your reaction to the NEXT episode. Wish these were coming closer together. Ugh. We are living vicariously through your reactions. It has been a number of years since we saw these first episodes, though we've seen them 4-5 times (at least). So good. Thank you for these videos. Have a wonderful day...cannot wait for more from you. PS - Marie keeps telling me to tell you...that you WILL love Miller...in time. BTW, the hat fits Miller. here IS a reason for it. Mars ship is called the Donneger. You are doing great, honestly. There are LOTS of names, but you'll get it in time. We think you are NOW hooked. Another really good sci-fi show that is really new is Foundation, it’s only 1 season so far and even if you don’t watch it on your channel I’d really recommend giving it a shot. The guy that plays Anderson Dawes in expanse is also in the show.

I found that lacking in so many ways....i wouldn´t call it great, but a big disappointment. The acting is generally poor (except Lee Pace and Jarred Harris), and sometimes reaching an atrocious level, bad scene blocking, lousy directing, poor writing (sometimes even dumb). Sets and cinematography are great, though. And it shouldn´t have been called "Foundation", but something else...i understand that in adapting a book to tv, some things have to change, but some of those are complete 180´s of some of Asimov ´s core concepts.

Apart from whether Foundation is a good or bad adaptation of the wonderful books, or a good or bad show in its own right, I'm pretty sure that The Expanse lost Jared Harris to it, which pisses me off.

@@mufana1 Whoa, and that is the issue of reading books first lol. You would be hard pressed to find a movie/show adaption from a book to be as good or better than the book. I haven't read the books, but knew going in many that had were upset at the show. I however went in blind and really enjoyed it. From what I know of the books, there is a lot of time skipping, and that just isn't feasible for show contracts so things have to be changed just a bit or else you would need to find a bunch of good actors on a constant changing actor landscape which would not be good for a shows long term success. People usually need to grow attached to characters.

@@JBPVFL Even if Foundation wasn´t an adaptation, it´s still objectively bad in the aspects i referred. Of course, this doesn´t mean one can´t enjoy it. I stuck up with it mainly because of the Empire storyline and Lee Pace. But for as much money Apple poured into it, most of the time it feels so amateurish... And i agree on the sentiment @Yesquire0 expressed: to lose Jarred to the poorness that Foundation ended up to be....blargh!

As someone with A neg I am often called upon as a rare type! also, what everyone else says, Season 1 is the mystery to figure out what the heck might be going on and then the roller coaster ride commences. You need the time to fall in love with the characters and then it's a show that you will never ever forget. Glad to have you on the ride!!

I tend to think of Anderson Dawes as the unholy love-child of Malcolm X and Don Vito Corleone. He's another example of Belter ethos. He is played by Jared Harris the son of actor Richard Harris.

Once again, another Excellent Reaction! - so glad you're sticking with it! OPA is a semi autonomous organization of Belter factions. Some are more hardcore "Anti Inner" (Earth & Mars) than others. From the perspective of Earth & Mars, all Belters & the OPA are basically the same - to them Belter = Criminal. From the perspective of most "regular" belters the OPA may do some bad, but overall they know they are on the side of the Belters. There are, however, some Belters who are straight up Criminals / Terrorists - Like the big guy with the spike at the end... - but just as in many different times in History, their sides "Terrorist" is your sides "Freedom fighter". The conversation between Miller & Dawes is one of several in this show that are between characters who both know more than they are letting on and are actually 2 different conversations happening at the same time. Both Miller & Dawes know the other guy is saying 1 thing, but meaning something different, or at least not saying all of what they know. Just excellent writing & one of the reasons having the authors of the books involved with writing / producing the series was such a good call.

This show depends on your perspective when looking at the different factions. The OPA is an umbrella coalition between many parties that want independence for the Belt. On one extreme end are hardcore actual terrorists, in the middle are social welfare organizations. There are politicians ( like Anderson Dawes) who glom on to any chance to push their agendas. At the more extreme end are "patriotic" criminals and pirates. From a Belter perspective Earth looks like a tyrannical slavemaster that actively hates any manifesteation of democracy in the Belt.Their main experience with Earth is through Earth owned corporations that control thre overwhelming majority of commerce in the Belt. Even organaisations which provide public services are Earth owned profit generating businesses. (Like Star Helix Security, which leads to Miller's opinion that Ceres doesn't have laws, it just has cops.) Mars is the most proud and ideologically driven faction. Descended from very smart and motivated people they see themsleves as tiny underdogs when compared to the might of Earth, and their whole society is based on maintaining their independence. They have full employment and the best tech. Earth sees itself and mostly sees the problems it has to deal with. Most of it's resources go to maintaining it's polluted environment and feeding tens of billions of unemployed people without a future. Still, Earth is the source of many resources that humans cannot do without. People like Chrisjen who think that "Earth must come first" tend to think that humankind still needs Earth to survive. Earth still has the largest military in the Solar System (albeit aging and often crippled by maintainence issues) Humans are humans, and there are good and bad people in every faction. There is so much world building and set up in Season 1 it can feel like plot and character are an afterthought. I assure you that is not true. Some of the people you have already met you will come to love. I love your reactions so far!

I am so psyched for these reactions. Thank you! Heading over to Patreon because... Well, it's episode 4... Enough said. Oh, and Anderson Dawes is played by Jared Harris, who you may have seen in Mad Men and Chernobyl, in which he was amazing. He nails his portrayal of Dawes. OPA = Outer Planets Alliance, an alliance of lots of different and disparate groups all loosely connected by a wish for belter independence, though with all different ideas on how to bring that about. Alex is ex-Martian Navy. The little transparent ball-shaped pill that Lopez took while interrogating people is a focus drug. So happy you caught the Shaddid Mormon comedy night prank

Great reaction! Chrisjen will do what ever it takes to win! She has an internal instinct that there is a threat to Earth. She does hate losing her friend, but Earth must come first! Mars interrogating the Knight crew is a great way for us to get to know more about these characters. I'm sure you noticed the guy Miller found dead after the riot was the one who Julie was connected to on the dating app. Jared Harris playing Anderson Dawes! He such a great actor! I will say this about your perception of betlers or even the OPA, you are thinking that if they are the underdogs they must be the good guys! Oh my sweet summer child! These writers are on a much bigger level than you think! Can't wait for the next one!

Glad you're still sticking with it. You only have our word on that it's a great show. I said it before but it took me two tries with this series. This episode is great since we learn a little bit about the Martians, but more importantly, we learn more about the crew we've been following the past two episodes. For me that was good and I started to find myself latching on to them a bit more. Still had no clue what Miller was up to or how it's all going to fit together. Still feels that it's separate stuff but now I'm seeing it. Love the interrogations and I liked Havalok too. Amos is definitely an interesting character and his relationship with Naomi is more of one where he knows her more than the others so he follows her lead. After all Engineers and Mechanics work together a lot. The OPA, to me, is like how the IRA was or the Irish independence movement. The Outer Planet Alliance is meant to be a coalition for all Belters, but not all Belters are OPA, because apparently members of the OPA have done terrorist acts against the Inner Planets. So there's areas of gray as the the respectability of the OPA. More answers to come as well as A LOT going on next episode. Great reaction and picking up a lot on the characters personalities and motives. You're doing great.

Some people describe "The Expanse" as "Game of Thrones" in space. I don't see it but the people you like seem to be dying. The Anderson Dawes actor is Jered Harris son of English actor Richard Harris. Jered is good in "The Expanse" but great in "Chernobyl".

In the novel "Leviathan Wakes" we are told that Miller and Octavia had been partners, and became lovers, and when that went sour they went their separate ways, which is when Captain Shadid "saddled" Miller with the "rookie" from Earth, Havelock.

Lieutenant Lopez takes a "focus drug" prior to every interrogation which allows him to see every microexpression, pupil dilation, and telltale drop of sweat on the person he is interrogating. The questions that he asks are designed to elicit responses that he can then interpret and use to ask further questions in order to find the information that he is looking for.
