Alex Kamal has a Texan accent because the Mariner Valley was settled by Texans. Then Indians & other Asians came in droves. Since English was the international language they all ended up with that accent in the Valley.

ShasOFish Oh god, absolutely. Remember this series starts her out torturing a guy ("Let's give him another 48 hours to think it over") and none of these three are even commenting on that! I honestly thought there would be a bit more dislike for her (there was for me), and it would only be as the show progressed that they came to love her.

here`s a little background to understand the factions: As the writers have said, we`ve gotten rid of racism (aka the mixed cast which reflects the mixing of all people (white, black and all in between) throughout the solar system), BUT we now have planetism: even though the differences are small, they rule the people`s mindset. Earth, the old empire under the UN that tries to preserve the status quo and relies on space for the resources to keep its 30 billion residents from splintering apart. Mars, the upstart colony that broke away (don`t worry, that story will come in season 2) that now feels itself the superior to the rest due to its unity and military core, and wants to become a better version of earth and overtake the old one, thus also relying on the resources from the belt to continue its terraforming project, the effort that employs virtually the entire population, as it turns out changing a planet takes some effort. the belt and the outer planets, with all the metals and waterice humanity needs, that want to break free but are kept under permanent occupation by mars and earth to keep the resources flowing to the inner planets, thus causing rising anger and separatism. Now imagine what would happen if some shadow group threw a wrench into this solar system and, for its own motives, tries to start a war with this kind of instability, imagine the shitstorm you`d get......

addick land i love this show but the terraforming always irked me, because from the tech we throughout the series the Martians or any of the other humans have anywhere near the tech required for terraform, as you said terraform a planet takes an absolutely tremendous effort and I really do mean that literally, it’s so hard to the point that it’s easier to build your own habitats in space with Earth like qualities. The energy required to terraform a plane like Mars so that it is like Earth, would literally almost basically take you deconstructing the planet and reconstructing again to get what you want, but at that point the energy you wasted could’ve been used to build dozens of habitats with more surface area than Mars any where you wanted with any sort of customizability you want.

To clear up the confusion about Alex, the Martian brown pilot dude's accent, he is from the Mariner Valley on Mars, which was historically (in the Expanse book-verse) settled by Chinese, Indians and Texans from Earth. So they can look like any one of those groups, but they all speak with an exaggerated Texan drawl.

I'm super excited for other shows they react to like Community, Avatar and OPM but nothing truly compares to the amazing ride the Chi-Normies are embarking on with this show. Martians were mostly made up of a mix of Indians, Asians and Texan settlers in the book. Therefore they ended up with browner skin and with Texas drawls.

Mars is a military based society but it isn’t the main military power of the system, the strongest nation by far is Earth which has 5 times the fleet that Mars has and they have a way larger population at 30 billion so in an all out war, Earth would pretty much win so Mars is avoiding all conflict with them by becoming a military power and focusing on terraforming.

The authors do a great explanation of the accent in the books; the Mariner Valley was originally settled by Indians, Chinese, and a small number of Texans. Apparently the accent is contagious. Alex also gets teased about it in the later books by other Martians, because it stands out so much.

The Martian Congressional Republic is extremely fascinating, both in the books and the TV series. We don't really get a deep look into their society, only some small glimpses. What we do get shows something that is kind of alien to a lot of people but is perfectly logical: Mars is ostensibly a democracy, but because of the harsh nature of living on Mars (where a minor slip-up can have catastrophic consequences for an entire settlement), their society is heavily militarized and somewhat authoritarian in nature. It's also somewhat utopian as well, in that their entire society is focused on the task of terraforming Mars to create a second Earth.

Why would they be more powerful when their gravity is 1/3 or earth's? If anything they'd be weaker. In fact that's one of the issues with the mission to mars. If we don't come up with something to simulate earth's gravity on mars or a way to counter the effects of low gravity for long periods of time, people who go there would not be able to come back. Clear example, your heart is a muscle. In lower gravity blood weights less so it takes less effort for the heart to pump it through your body. That also means, like all muscles, with less use it'll become weaker. If it keeps going for long enough then, when coming back to earth, it wouldn't be able to pump blood properly or at all.That's why astronauts don't stay longer than 6 months in space and are constantly exercising while in space. Which also means, if humans colonize mars, unless there's some sort of artificial gravity, humans who live there would be way weaker. Not to mention humans born there.

Doesn't devalue anything you said! Earthers are still physically superior for all the reasons you gave. Their warship crews also have a distinct advantage - the Epstein Drive that ships in the Expanse use generate gravity in the direction they point. Ships are constructed like skyscrapers with the drive at the bottom, to give gravity. The faster the ship is accelerating, the more gravity is generated. If you have too much gravity for too long, blood vessels start bursting. Warships do this frequently in combat, as higher speed gives you more time for your point defense to intercept incoming missiles. Earthers, with their 1G native gravity, can withstand acceleration of up to 12G for a few minutes while a Belter with a native gravity of 0.1G would have his bones instantly crushed under anything more than 8G acceleration.

As in our world, it's like Russia and the US...both powerful but going against each other is too dangerous for each side. The US is Earth...it's a gem for all other governments...Russia is kind of like Mars, doesn't have living conditions as good as Earth/US but, military wise, it is well prepared and is a huge threat...
